Theatre OUTlanta created theatre from the perspectives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and queer people, theatre that worked to reflect the many different experiences of lgbtq people and to build bridges within both the lgbtq community and the wider community.

An open letter

April 2006

To everyone who supported Theatre OUTlanta:

Thank you for your time, energy, and ideas in support of Theatre OUTlanta. We, the board of Theatre OUTlanta, are in awe of all the great people who worked to give life to this organization. Your enthusiasm carried us through each production.

As a board, we've spent the past year trying to find ways to put Theatre OUTlanta on a firmer footing. We've taken a hard look at both our current resources and potential future resources. We've come to some difficult decisions.

We have realized that Theatre OUTlanta, as an organization, has never reached a critical mass of resources--including people, time, and money--which would make it self-sustaining. After five years of effort, we have realized that the time does not seem to be right for this endeavor. When the time is right for an idea or organization nothing can stop it from coming into its own, and this has not happened with Theatre OUTlanta. Therefore, we have made the decision that it's time to disband this organization.

We hope that you will continue to support lgbtq theatre:

  • Attend lgbtq shows
  • Let theatres that do lgbtq theatre know you appreciate them
  • Produce lgbtq shows
  • Encourage theatres you work with or attend to produce lgbtq shows

If you ever need help or advice in the process, we are willing to share what we've learned throughout this journey. Our email address is still active.

For five years, Theatre OUTlanta's mission was to produce theatre which reflected the diversity of voices within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. There is more lgbtq theatre now then there was when we started and we are grateful, but the diversity of voices that we envisioned can not be found on Atlanta stages yet.

Now that Theatre OUTlanta has closed, as individuals we want to continue to support diverse lgbtq theatre in Atlanta . One way we will be doing this is by starting a Yahoo! Groups list to keep each other and the lgbtq communities and anyone else who is interested informed about what lgbtq shows are being done. We invite you all to join and to contribute to the list. You can join the list by sending an email to
theatreLGBTQatlanta-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or by visiting www.groups.yahoo.com/group/theatreLGBTQatlanta/.

We want to thank you all again for your support these past five years. Thank you for attending our performances, performing, doing technical work, and giving us advice. We're each very grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of Theatre OUTlanta and thank you for making that possible.

Sincerely,

Nina Gooch
