In April 2006, with deep regret and infinite gratitude for the many people who helped us over our five-year history, Theatre OUTlanta made the difficult decision to disband.

Theatre OUTlanta created theatre from the perspectives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and queer people, theatre that worked to reflect the many different experiences of lgbtq people and to buld bridges within both the lgbtq community and the wider community.

Previous gay/lesbian and feminist theatre companies in Atlanta

This list, we know, is incomplete and for several of these companies, we have little more than the names. We wanted, however, to honor these pioneers dedicated to producing lgbt and feminist plays when mainstream companies were not yet doing so.

  • The Red Dyke Theatre, lesbian theatre company, 70's to early 80's.
  • Womansong, feminist theatre company
  • Midtown Productions and Razz-A-Ma-Tazz, 1979-1981
  • S.A.M.E./OutProud Theater, gay and lesbian theatre company, 1984 to 1994 founded by Rebecca Ranson. In addition to presenting plays for ten years, eventually under the name OutProud Theater, S.A.M.E. produced a literary magazine called Amethyst, and founded both the film festival that became Out on Film, now sponsored by Image Film and Video, and the newspaper that is now Southern Voice. S.A.M.E stood for Southeastern Arts, Media and Education.
  • Atlanta Gay and Lesbian Arts Festival, annual festival running from the mid 80's to the mid 90's
  • Funny . . . . That Way, gay and lesbian company doing plays as well as improv, now on hiatus since 2002.
