late 80's, many of the more than 80 cavity trees used by boreal owls for nesting
have either fallen to the ground or have been removed by timber harvests.
During that same period, my ongoing springtime population monitoring
suggests a marked decrease in the abundance and distribution of the owls.
First the trees disappear, then the owls. Is there a relationship?
In January, 2005, in cooperation with the
Superior National Forest, I embarked on a nest box construction, placement,
and maintenance program. My goal for 2005 is to establish 100 nest boxes
in habitats that have historically supported boreal and northern saw-whet nests.
Although nest box placement may provide a short-term benefit to owls, I also
recognize the need to actively conserve and advocate for older and old-growth
Besides construction, each box must be
maintained on an annual basis (cleaned, repaired) and checked in the spring to
find out if an owl family has "set up shop". If you are interested in
supporting my efforts, please
contact me. Contributions are
not tax-deductible at this time.
Educators/Classroom Sponsor a Nest Box Program
Teachers, Paraprofessionals, Naturalists:
What better way to educate, than with hands-on learning? For
North Shore classrooms can support the construction and placement of one (or
more) nest boxes within critical boreal owl habitat. Students will have an opportunity to construct their
pre-assembled materials and hardware; making this a great opportunity for
hands-on learning, and a great way to encourage student involvement with the boreal
forest ecosystem. Following construction, your box will be placed along an
established nest box trail. During the Spring "box check" those
classrooms sponsoring a nest box, will have an opportunity to
accompany me as I check your boxes for owl occupancy.
Sponsor a Nest Box
contribution of $50.00 will support the construction, placement and
maintenance of one nest box for one year. You will receive information
pertaining to the boxes' location, a certificate of Sponsorship and updates on
occupancy and/or nesting attempts.
Sponsor a Nest
contribution of $140.00 will support the construction, placement, and
maintenance of 3 nest boxes for one year. You will be informed of the
breeding season status of your boxes. You will receive a certificate of
Sponsorship. Should an owl family set up residence, you will be invited
to accompany me during banding operations.
Sponsor a Nest
contribution of $250.00 (or more) will support the construction, placement and
maintenance of 6 nest boxes for one year. You will be informed of the
breeding season status of your boxes. You will be invited to participate
in box monitoring and maintenance. Should an owl family set up
residence, you will be invited to accompany me during banding
