A History of Support Efforts for Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Fall 1996
As we all know by now, the Fate of Mr. & Mrs. Smith
was decided in early November.
I decided to move all the reports of, and suggestions for, our efforts to keep the show on the air, to this page.
Thanks to those who helped
As Scott has signed a new contract with Paramount Network television and is no longer contracted to Warner Brothers,
the only thing left to ask from CBS is airing of the last 4 episodes...
Here's a review of last fall's reviews and our efforts to keep the show on the air...
Monday 10/28
per Daily Variety
In adults 19-49, "RAYMOND dropped 12% of its MURPHY BROWN lead-in, compared to
an average 2% build for slot regular CYBILL, while SMITH crashed 32% below the 18-49 adverage of slot regular CHICAGO HOPE.

The future (such as it is):
TV guide had a review of the fall season ratings
so far. The article says:
"Overall, CBS's ratings have improved, but rivals claim the gains are among
viewers 50 and older, who are less important to most advertisers than the 18 to 49 audience. That doesn't faze Leslie Moonves, president of CBS Entertainment, who says that all of his new shows will be staying on the schedule at least through the end of t
he year"

What can we do???
Call CBS Programming Services.
CBS is taking viewer comments on their shows
The number they gave me was: 1-212-975-3247. Keep trying -- you've seen the ratings... The woman did write down my comments...
If you call between 2-3:30pm ET, you *may* get to actually talk to someone [I did], but they're set up to take comments by voice mail. PLEASE call and let CBS know you like M&MS and would like to see it continue.
Here's a positive aside to the ratings.
On the good side, according to Variety,
even with the overall fall in placement, the show is still competitive;
running a close second in the adult demographic category. So while there
are a lot of kids/teenagers out there watching TGIF ABC programming, the
much revered adults market is still tuning into watch M&M.
So when it comes to success it sometimes means that Advertisers are getting their product seen by the audience that is most likely to buy, and M&M is coming
through still for them. So there really is a silver lining in all of this, unfortunately you really have to look for it.
Thanks to tigger@netcom.com for her optimism
The Reviews... The bad news and the good news
Okay gang,
Well, either people do read reviews, or they watched the pilot and gave up.
Since the show has improved since then, we need people to take another look. So...
- Kidnap all your friends and hold them hostage in front of your TV on Friday night,
- Get out on your own front lawn in an M&Ms t-shirt on Friday night and sing "Do You Wanna Dance" (they might haul you away for this one), or...
- For those who still crave an interview on the Rosie O'Donnell show...
- If you are on AOL you can go to her section, KEYWORD: Rosie and suggest Scott as a guest, as suggested on a.t.s-b. For those of you not on AOL, check her web page for a feedback address (there is one now). Though, to
be honest, from what I hear, Scott barely has time to think right now, let alone fly to NY...
- Other avenues in the Support this Show campaign, are writing the head of CBS.

M&Ms Campaign
Sudey counted at least 133 packages of M&Ms being sent to CBS. They should have landed Tuesday.
M&Ms Campaign
In a discussion on the Mr and Mrs Smith chat on AOL, a plan to send CBS a notice that we want Mr and Mrs Smith to stay on the air has been launched
The plan is to send M&Ms (the candy : ) ) to CBS AND the producers.
We will be sending M&Ms to the Producers as a THANK YOU and to show support for the show. (considering the ratings, they could probably use some support).

and
Mail your individual bags of M&Ms to Leslie Moonves at CBS.

Also
You should write your own comments and say whatever you like, but it was suggested that a catch phrase be used as a header for all the letters, so they know it was an organized effort by fans.
The catch phrase decided on is this:
"Smitty (or Mrs. Smith, if you're a guy) Melts In Our Mouths, If You'll Give Him a Hand. Don't let this show melt from the CBS schedule"
then say Please keep Mr. and Mrs. Smith on, change the night...change the time...we love the show...etc etc etc.
Make sure your M&M's are in a sealed original M&M bag. Small, medium, or large is fine.
Send these off on Friday Nov 8 (if you missed the date and still feel like "making a statement", feel free).
Thanks
Here are some suggestions from Margaret Colchin of Project Quantum Leap fan club on how to support the show.
You can also write to:
- Mr. & Mrs. Smith
- c/o CBS-TV
- 7800 Beverly Blvd.
- Los Angeles, CA 90036
This was suggested by the producers, John Sakmar and Kerry Lenhart, who said, "Please stick with us. We've got a tough fight against X-Files and Millennium".
DEADLINE for posting on CBS's page where you can e-mail support and congratulations to the stars of its new shows is long gone.
You can read other people's posts to Scott, but I'm probably the only one who saved the file, so, if you want me to post it, so if you want it posted email me. I have a ton of stuff on my hard drive that needs sorti
ng out.
