Moving in process...
October 11, 1997 Moving day #1
Moving a web site is hard to do...
at least withoutall the latest fancy web tools. If you hit a link that takes you nowhere, here are some ideas on what to try next.
Moving a web site is like moving your home. Unless you have a big van, sometimes half your furniture is at your new house, but your phone is still at your old house. And sometimes things are actually in your new house, but not in the room where they should be.
So, try this...
If you hit a link that takes you nowhere, it is either internal or old. Old means it's someone else's site and they dropped or moved it and I haven't updated the link. Be patient--I have a lot of "furniture."
Internal means it's mine, and it's either not moved to this site yet, it's back at the old site, it actually is here but I didn't update the link, or, well... something else.
Hang around a while, hopefully I will have enough peace in my life to get this all back together (without a map--sorta like trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle without the picture on the box!)
The biggest problem lately seems to be "case"--mindspring's web server seems to be very picky about it. So, if you don't get something, check the case... right click on the link, choose copy, and paste into the box where you type URL's--if you see any capital letters, that's probably the problem. Change them to lower case and hit enter. You might get there. And if you catch any of them, let me know, so I can fix them? I have probably around 50 pages and it's hard to keep them all correct.
- Try this:
- right click on the link you are trying to get to
- copy and paste it to the box up at the top of the page where you type in your URL
- now look at it...
- if all it says is thispage.html it's what we call a relative link--complicated stuff, but what it means is, the page should be in the same directory at the same site, as the page you are at now. So,
- stick your mouse cursor in front of that URL you just pasted (if the whole URL gets hilighted, that's not what you want--click it one more time) then type in, http://www.mindspring.com/~pashworth/ hit enter and see if that gets you where you wanted to go
- BEWARE of links that say .html when I haven't changed the file names yet--try .htm instead. There are a LOT of pages....
- If not
- clear out that stuff you just typed in: from "http" thru "~pashworth/" and stick this in instead
- http://www1.usa1.com/~ashworth/ and hit enter...
- Simpler problems:
- You right clicked and got a link that said: http://www1.usa1.com/~ashworth/somepageorother.html
- Choose Copy, and paste into the Location box, then replace the www1.usa1.com/~ashworth with www.mindspring.com/~pashworth
- If you are a real newbie at this, any text that is hilighted is going to be erased when you start typing--to unhilight text in the Location box, click one more time and look for the flashing cursor line. That's where whatever you type will go. If you want to replace a bunch of text--hilight it, by clicking your mouse in front of the first letter, holding down your left mouse button, and dragging your mouse to the end of the text you want to hilight. Then type right over it.
Hopefully the furniture will be back in order soon
