The first thing you will need is a "stack."
This is essentially the program that makes your DOS/Windows machine be able to speak to the internet....which speak, often, in UNIX..
Using a Winsock app will allow you to access the internet graphically, without having to use unintelligible UNIX commands.

Newsreaders
Free Agent **Highly Recommended, allows you to do a great deal of your newsreading offline to save connect time charges.
You can even download only the headers in a newsgroup, log off, mark the threads you wish to read or keep tabs on, then log back on and download those messages only. Read and reply off-line.
