Winsock Apps

Winsock Apps are programs for accessing the internet via Windows.

The first thing you will need is a "stack."
This is essentially the program that makes your DOS/Windows machine be able to speak to the internet....which speak, often, in UNIX..
Using a Winsock app will allow you to access the internet graphically, without having to use unintelligible UNIX commands.

Other programs you will need are:

an e-mail program
a Web Browser, to see all the neat stuff on the Worldwide Web
an HTML editor, if you want to create web pages
an FTP program, if you want for uploading web pages
a news reader--if you subscribe to Usenet Newgroups

I am going to recommend the programs I am using, also because I can answer questions on them, having used them.

Newsreaders

Free Agent **Highly Recommended, allows you to do a great deal of your newsreading offline to save connect time charges.
You can even download only the headers in a newsgroup, log off, mark the threads you wish to read or keep tabs on, then log back on and download those messages only. Read and reply off-line.

Other necessities

A lot of files you you download will come in zipped (compressed) format
You will need an unzipping program to decompress them.
