The true story of Old Drum
Located by Emma Fee
Hi Kristy,
thank you for contacting Viewer Relations. The Trial of Old Drum will air on
Friday, March 17 at 8 & 10 PM & 12 AM EST and again on Sunday, March 19 at 10
AM EST and also on Saturday, March 25 at 4 PM EST on Animal Planet. The following is
the description that we have for this program:
Old Drum is a classic, powerfully moving true story of a boy's undying love for his dog -- a theme as timeless as the plains that stretch across the heartland of America. . .
The year is 1955. The setting: the rolling hills and raging rivers of Western Missouri. In the midst of this rural, pastoral setting, we meet 12-year-old CHARLIE BURDEN and his faithful pal, Old Drum - an extraordinary dog whom Charlie loves. (Significantly, the story is told from the point of view of CHARLES BURDEN (60), a whimsical man reflecting back on a defining moment of his childhood.)
As the summer begins, Charlie and Old Drum are off on a series of adventures. A rattlesnake nearly attacks Charlie, but Old Drum is there to fight him off. And when Charlie's scheme to turn a raft into a fishing vessel unravels in 20 feet of water, Old Drum is there to rescue him. All in all, a pretty normal life for a ten year old kid on a Missouri farm. That is until the wild dogs arrive on the scene.
A series of violent attacks on local livestock have created more than a little tension among the farmers and sheep ranchers in the region. Then, late one afternoon, Charlie and Old Drum are accosted by a pack of wild dogs. Badly outnumbered, Charlie's own life is threatened, until Old Drum's instincts take over. Though nearly killed, Old Drum saves Charlie's life and gains instant fame throughout the region. Even Charlie's erascable neighbor, UNCLE LON, pays his respects to Old Drum, and for a moment this somewhat estranged family is brought back together.
But Old Drum's status as a "celebrity" is tragically short-lived, for Charlie's heart and the peace and tranquility of his small hometown is shattered overnight when a sheep is killed -- and Old Drum is accused of doing it! The accusation appears to have some credibility, and if convicted it would mean certain death for Old Drum. The issue divides Warrensburg and Charlie's family right down the middle.
With the evidence mounting against Old Drum, it's Charlie who must save the life and
reputation of his faithful, four-legged friend and restore peace to his small home town. Old
Drum is forced to stand trial, his life hanging in the balance. In the process, Charlie's father
and long-estranged Uncle eventually become a family again.
And as for Old Drum, well, as far as we know, Warrensburg, Missouri, is still the only town
in America with a statue of a hunting dog parked smack in the middle of its town square!
Thanks again to Kristy!
