Trek United -- Final
I had to dig thru a lot to find this, but this appears to be the salient paragraph

Our final proposal was knocked down by Paramount. We will not see a season five for Star Trek Enterprise. All money as I stated earlier will be refunded starting Monday or Tuesday of this week.

Quotes -- from the Finale Party
lifted bodily from Pippa's post on SBFF (see side menu for link), originally from StarTrek.com

"I've had a great time," said series star Scott Bakula. "I felt like we did some great shows. We had four great seasons, and I know we got better every year. I'm proud of the work we've done. You know, I'm sad to say goodbye to everybody, all these great, talented people, but we had a ball together." Except for a benefit stage performance on May 20 (related story), Scott has nothing specific on the horizon, acting-wise. "Not doing anything right now. Just trying to finish the remodel of my house!"
thanks Pippa

If next week's TV Guide article is getting you down...
check out this excerpt from the New York Times article on TU

That's Enterprise

Published: April 10, 2005

Tim Brazeal has a dream: to raise enough money from fans to subsidize a fifth season of "Star Trek: Enterprise" (with Scott Bakula), currently scheduled to end on May 13. Mr. Brazeal, who lives in Marysville, Tenn., also has a number: $3,139,035.50. That's the amount that he said had been donated or pledged to his campaign, by more than 8,500 donors, by early last week. And he hinted that by this weekend, if a few anticipated pledges came through, "that figure will look small."

There have been grass-roots fund-raising campaigns for TV shows before; fans of the British soap "EastEnders" recently kept it on Channel 21 in New York by raising $33,692. But Mr. Brazeal and his staff of volunteers, which he says numbers about 50, are working on a different scale: the goal of their campaign, carried out at www.saveenterprise.com and www.trekunited.com, is $32 million. Enough to, say, buy network air time for 23 new episodes at $1.6 million each. Mr. Brazeal said he had had talks with representatives of Spike, TNT, the WB and others, but couldn't give out any names: "You can talk to a lot of different people and you can't say you've talked to anybody. I don't understand that part of the business."

Live /Online -- Site for Hamilton goers
Couldn't figure out quite which category that fell into. Anyway, Emma has created a site with helpful info for Hamilton goes. I'd thought of doing one myself (again) but didn't have the time/was intimidated by the people who didn't want their info copied to another site, so.. anyway, Emma has done a lovely job. Check it out.
Hope to see you there. And if you need any other info/peer pressure to convince you to go/moral support/adoption, feel free to email me. If you have any info to add, email Emma. :-)
Many thanks to Emma, and, once again, to those who worked their tails off to find us all a place to stay and plan some fun events for the weekend.

And, oh yeah, for you fence-sitters, Scott and Chelsea *will* be doing a meet and greet, although it may be different from the one we've had for the past two years, since they are the entire show themselves. Last two years were fortunate enough to get a sit-down Q&A session with Scott. My guess is that after two hours of performing, just the two of them, this might be more along the lines of the Love Letters reception. That's just a guess, but it makes the most sense to me. For those who are interested, I still have the Love Letters section up on this site. It includes local area info (some for Glendale but some for LA in general) as well as reports from attendees who were nice enough to let me archive them.

Enterprise Update
from the Modesto Bee, comes this bit of info for pondering.

By TERRY MORROW, Knoxville News Sentinel
Last Updated: March 29, 2005, 07:16:57 PM PST

The campaign will end once the principal actors are no longer under contract with the series, which could happen in the next six weeks. so.. there's the time limit (if the reporter has his facts right. It's hard to reignite a show when its cast is gone.

Trek over to TrekUnited.com for those details on who to write to.

You can order tickets on the ticket line at (310) 943-7950.
This is an answering machine and they will ask you for (so have ready) the following info:

Hamilton -- Hotel and Tickets coming soon
Thanks to Barbara, Emma, Helene, and Amy (I think that's everyone) who have been doing some scouting to find the batch of us a place where we could stay together in L.A. They've narrowed down their list of hotels to 2 and are awaiting a reply from the hotel on a discount. If you're coming, and you're looking for a place to stay, all of us would appreciate it if you could patronize whichever place is chosen: they've had to promise a certain amount of bookings (not sure how many) in order to get the discount for everyone (I looked at some hotels for that weekend, and, trust me, few of us could possibly afford them without a discount, plus there was some trouble finding available rooms).
Details are coming soon, as well as, hopefully, info on where to purchase tickets to the show. Apparently it took a very long time to get the rights to the show itself, but that's done now, and I'm told that tickets should be available by the end of the week.
I'll post as soon as I find out. For those in a hurry, just join the crowd waiting at the SBFF.

Spoiler Free Last Day of Production Report
Quoting from the report at Trek Web which is culled from the report at StarTrek.com, I wanted to post the following excerpts (I'm tired, pardon my lack of command of the English language there)

"The final day of principal photography on 'These Are the Voyages...' - this past Tuesday - was similar in spirit to that of the DEEP SPACE NINE finale 'What You Leave Behind,' in that a large crowd scene for late in the episode consisted almost entirely of behind-the-scenes crew people, production and creative staff, and other special guests to the set. Without giving away specific story points, there is an Auditorium filled with a large crowd (most of which will be computer generated) that includes a 'VIP Section.'" "The final day of principal photography on 'These Are the Voyages...' - this past Tuesday - was similar in spirit to that of the DEEP SPACE NINE finale 'What You Leave Behind,' in that a large crowd scene for late in the episode consisted almost entirely of behind-the-scenes crew people, production and creative staff, and other special guests to the set. The section includes several cameos by behind the scenes personnel including Manny Coto, Andre Bormanis, and Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens. As each of the regular cast wrapped their work and were excused from the set for one last time, emotion ran high and star Scott Bakula too the opportunity to address the assembled crew.

"In particular, he thanked the crew members who had been working on STAR TREK for 18 years since the beginning of NEXT GENERATION, for making him and his castmates feel so welcome during the four years of this show's run. And he got emotional as he reminded everyone to 'remember the people we lost' (without naming names, he was apparently referring to assistant director Jerry Fleck and 'Ensign Cutler' actress Kellie Waymire, who each died before their time)."

Upcoming Live -- No News
We still have no news on the ticket for the Hamilton, however we have been assured that the show will take place. I believe that there were issues with the licensing. Have no fear. Scott has committed, so barring major misfortune (death, severe illness, fire, flood, famine, plague, all the usual) the show shall go on, even if it's two hours of him reading the phone book. (I'm kidding about the phone book. He'll definitely be doing *something* on May 20th)

For those who need info for reference purposes, here's a link to LAST YEAR'S benefit page

Please note -- this is last year's. Please do not call the contact number. The price is for estimation purposes only. The location of the school itself has not changed. (And this info has been here all along -- I found it by googling, myself -- I'm just linking it back in for reference)

Press Release -- Enterprise Project NY Rally
from MJ

For Immediate Release
Contact: MJ Rogers mjjr91@aol.com, 7171-578-2065

ENTERPRISE Project and friends rally for Star Trek: Enterprise in New York

Despite threats of snow and sleet, Enterprise Project members and friends from along the East Coast from Boston to Washinton, and some Trek fans from Europe, joined in New York on February 21 to demand a continuation of Enterprise.

Project members carried signs to the CBS Early Show. Although they were not on camera, Trek fans stayed after the main public events had ended, until after 9 am. Anchor Harry Smith came out to speak with fans, and allowed fans to photograph him with a sign reading "Save Star Trek:Enterprise". Mr. Smith has previously interviewed Scott Bakula, star of Enterprise, about the show.

At Viacom, on Broadway, a larger group gathered with signs and with the Enterprise Project banner. Fans spoke to a large number of passers-by, who also had the opportunity to sign petitions. A petition with nearly 40 pages of signatures was presented to Viacom asking Viacom to continue with production of "Star Trek: Enterprise". Viacom is the parent corporation of Enterprise producer Paramount Pictures, as well as of UPN, which recently cancelled Enterprise.

A second equally large petition was carried to SciFi Channel, owned by NBC Universal, asking SciFi to consider picking up Enterprise for a fifth season. Fans carried signs along Sixth Avenue urging SciFi to broadcast Enterprise, and passers-by stopped to sign the petition. Some Rockefeller Center employee fans of Enterprise also stopped to speak with the fans.

ENTERPRISE Project Brings Fan Demonstrations to New York

On Monday, February 21, on the heels of a successful trip to UPN and Paramount, Enterprise Project will arrive in New York to blitz the East Coast media market to keep the NX-01 flying. All interested Enterprise and other Trek fans are invited to join us on Presidents' Day for this sweep.

At 8:00 am, fans will gather in front of CBS while its morning show is being aired. Les Moonves is president of CBS, and his wife Julie Chen is host of "The Early Show". The new Enterprise Project banner first seen in Los Angeles will be outside with the public trying to be seen in the outdoor crowd for the show.

At noon, fans will gather at Viacom, 1515 Broadway, to let Viacom, the parent company of Paramount, CBS, and UPN, know that viewers still want Paramount to produce Star Trek, and that they want either first-run syndication or cable broadcasting for the series.

At 3:00 pm, fans will gather outside the headquarters of SciFi Channel to show their support for the idea of SciFi Channel picking up the series.

Fans attending the events are encouraged to bring signs with them if possible to show their support of continued televised Trek.

Enterprise Fans Project -- Goal REACHED -- Will run FULL PAGE Ad in LA Times!!
My jaw hit the ground when I read this, and I missed yet another interview! (wail!) I am posting the following from Anita's email

Organizers of the Ad campaign to support Enterprise were interviewed on I-Sci-Fi.com tonight, 2/10/05, along with Jack Donner, Larry Nemecek and **Vaughan Armstrong**. Rex and company were so kind to do a "radio-thon" to help Enterprisefans.com reach our goal for the ad in support of Enterprise. Below is a message from Tim - which has been posted on http://www.enterprisefans.com - to let you know the outcome of the I-Sci-Fi radio-thon!
---------------------------------

WE HAVE MET OUR GOAL ! Three DAYS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE!

Thanks Clive and ALL the other fans who have contributed so generously and supported this ad.

Instead of running the USA Today ad. We have had someone from the L.A. Times that happens to be a Star Trek Enterprise fan. He worked out a Special deal for us for a FULL PAGE ad in the Los Angeles Times in the A section of the paper.

We are working on the ad as we speak. ...SNIP... The revised full-page ad will be posted on the website soon, and the ad will appear in the February 21 edition of the paper.

This is simply amazing to say the least.. This ad normally costs $35,000 dollars!
---------------------------------

Our sincere thanks to Rex, Carl and everyone in the I-Sci-Fi studio for making this audio-thon possible, to everyone who contributed to support the ad and Enterprise and to the gentleman who arranged for such a generous discount!

GO ENTERPRISE!!! Tell Mr. Moonves that Enterprise doesn't need a rest - and that fans have not lost interest. Tell him the show just needs a decent amount of support from its network! Keep writing those letters folks.

N.B any funds collected in excess of cost will be donated to tsunami relief

MJ's Marching Orders and Reminder
posted to Enterprise Project February 8 (the meetings at UPN and Paramount are tomorrow, this was written before she left, in response to some discussions and questions on the Enterprise Project mailing list)

For those of you who haven't seen me for a few days, especially those who were lamenting --

The fight for Trek is not on this list. The fight is Out There, with Them (Viacom and co.).

I've been finalizing trip details, preparing hard copy press packets, setting up a laptop to take with my digital camera for photos of all of this...

... checking with contacts who have been asking me to email them what's been going on over here so they can let their people know, and so the cast can know...

... hustling petition signatures...

... setting up to hustle at Farpoint, a con starting the day I get back from LA...

... calling certain people's agents about some things...

... collecting props, handouts, etc for the press events at P-mount and UPN...

and little things like reminding you that the whole world needs to email david_stapf (no space) @ (no space) paramount.com early and often...

I'm too busy to worry about what will happen -- I have to do some making it happen. And you should be doing the same thing -- don't agonize, ORGANIZE.

Organize your notes to remember to write, call, email every day.

Organize your friends to do the same.

Organize OFF LINE -- the fans not on line are the BULK of fandom.

Organize at events -- get to a con, talk, get signatures, ask us in advance for our trademark trading cards.

Don't cry for ENT or for Trek -- fight for it. Talk less, cry less, do more. That's what will let Paramount know that ten years down the road is NOT what Trek fans are looking for.

Fan Activities -- Time Change Alert
Tried to pass this on earlier but our internet access went out, at work.
from MJ

The planned UPN and Paramount action on 9/10 will have the following time change:

We will meet at UPN at 8:30 am and then at Paramount around 9:45 am.

The time change is based on a call I just made regarding times of arrival of various people at both locations, and allows us to have some time to get from one place to the other.

ALSO -- for those able to attend the events and who have time a bit later, there will be a working lunch to discuss further action. I'm asking people to meet up at the lobby of Hollywood Metropolitan Hotel on Sunset Blvd. at 12:00 if they'd like to discuss the day's events and other actions.

A friend of mine spoke with Scott's publicist yesterday, and, despite the cancellation, the chat will go on. (and likely they haven't updated the servers and they'll crash repeatedly and we'll all get thrown out like last time, but please remember that I'm a fatalist.)

Nancy will be leaving for LA on the 9th. You can send your letters to cast and crew in the body of your email, or as a Word attachment...

Rick Berman Clarification
By now you should have read the piece at scifi.com where Rick Berman says "We will not shop the show to another network" and "We will let it rest." AND you read MJ's post on the marching orders she got from her call to Berman's office.
Are you confused? Yeah, so was I. So I asked for clarification and here it is.

from MJ:
This isn't difficult, folks.

Read the piece carefully.

First off -- they're still holding out hope for UPN. For whatever reason, they're holding out hope.

Second -- I was told, maybe I wasn't clear -- that shopping it was in P-mount's mind far secondary to getting UPN back (can't do Trek cheap enough for most cable). So, while it's an option, it's a secondary one, one that has production biting its nails on how they'd do it, and one that Paramount (TPTB OVER production) is not thrilled by.

They'd be happy if UPN and Les just acknowledged either a horrid mistake or a desperate ploy for ratings. And they don't wanna do half-cost Trek from what they've already cut to because NOW they'd have to actually cut corners to cut costs -- ouch.

Shopping for a market is what Paramount might do only if UPN doesn't come through.

As for the "maybe a break" bit -- IF Trek's off the air for a while, I'm sure Berman would appreciate remaining at Paramount and collecting a salary -- who wouldn't. If that's the official line from them, he needs to be ready to toe it. Which doesn't mean that he necessarily likes it -- or that we need to buy it.

[and in a later email from MJ]
See my clarification post, it's not doublespeak, it's dealing with the public under Paramount's gaze...

He has to toe a party line... and Paramount's never officially sanctioned ANY fan group activity for any Trek series, so...

MJ

Back to me (Pam)

The USAToday ad campaign is going forward as well (please note that the amount listed on the page -- $14,700 -- should be $14,994, I believe). The text will be altered to fit the changed circumstances, and if I can get hold of that, I will post it.

I remember all the doomed fan campaigns to save shows over the years, but with all (very much) due respect to my hero, Joss Whedon -- this is not Angel, it's not even Quantum Leap; This is STAR TREK. And we CAN do this.

UPN is not accepting any phone calls on Enterprise's behalf. So get out your pens and write. And if you hate Berman and Braga -- do it for Manny Coto and do it for Scott. The writing on this show this year was just too good to let it die now.

Letters to the Cast and Crew -- A note from Nancy
Nancy from Vermont may be going to LA next week and even if she does not, she sent this message to pass on:

If you are interested in sending a message/letter to the cast, crew, and/or production staff of Star Trek: Enterprise to let them know how much you have appreciated the show and their hard work, please email it to me.

I will put each "letter" in a plastic sleeve in a 3 ring binder.

I will see to it that the notebook(s) get to the people at Enterprise through existing contacts I have worked with on other projects.

My email address is:

bunnymit@sover.net

Those of you with web sites of your own or who belong to other Scott or Enterprise groups, please cross post this so we have a good turnout of messages to Enterprise' creators.
I appreciate your help. I'd like to get them all by February 8th but I am open to suggestions for a different date. This should enable me to get them set and delivered in plenty of time to get to the show and allow them the time to copy any they may choose for individuals who want their own set.

I'd be glad to hear any comments or suggestions to improve or facilitate the notebook. thanks.
Nancy

To Do -- MJ's Call to Rick Berman'sOffice
quoting MJ:

I just got off the phone with Rick Berman's office regarding the cancellation.

Rick sends us the following message about keeing ENT in production:

Filming ends beginning of March, but sets will be up until end of March for reshoots and such -- so hitting now, and hitting hard, IMMEDIATELY, is the way to go.

What the production office would like to see is this:

1) A gangup on UPN. Paramount's floored that UPN's trying to duck calls and they're certain UPN knew the calling was going to happen.

2) Approach Paramount TV on the idea that if UPN doesn't reconsider, the show MUST be shopped out for syndication or cable promptly.

3) Do it NOW.

4) When I mentioned the UPN business and suggested the Viacom calls instead of or as well, let's just say I didn't hear any rebuttal.

I know, I know, we all hate UPN at this point, but UPN can afford full production costs for the show. Half-price Trek means the good old days of TOS mis-sliding doors, the boom mike shadows, and all that other stuff we don't want to see in new productions, along with fewer guests and plenty less great Trek SFX. (Maybe fewer sets. Captain, the Klingons have invaded the Mess Hall again... just like the Tellarites did last episode...)

The planned events at UPN and Viacom fill the production offices with cheer. Anyone who can make them or knows anyone who can make them, be there or tell your friends to make it over there.

But -- be sure to let Paramount TV proper know the money's there from happy fans if the show is ANYWHERE.

And SEND those Valentines if you haven't -- give 'em some more love notes.

MJ

OVERALL PRESS RELEASE
pass it around -- this is our position on the cancellation

For Immediate Release

Feb. 3, 2005

Contact: MJ Rogers, mjr91@aol.com

"ENTERPRISE PROJECT" FANS VOW NOT TO GIVE UP FIGHT

According to MJ Rogers, founder of The Enterprise Project (www.enterpriseproject.org), fans of Paramount's "Star Trek: Enterprise" have not given up the fight to save the show despite the announcements of the series' cancellation after its fourth season.

"The fans are angry, and they're willing to fight for the show," she explained.

Fan actions planned include a newspaper advertisement (information at www.enterprisefans.org), actions on February 10, 2005 at Paramount and UPN, the network broadcasting "Enterprise," which issued the cancellation notice, and a planned action in New York later in the month. Additionally, Enterprise Project fans are circulating a cyberpetition to be presented to Paramount, UPN, and their parent corporation, Viacom. Announcements and actions are also planned at upcoming science fiction conventions around the country, by both Enterprise Project and fellow fan organization Save Enterprise.

"UPN's Friday night ratings have been up substantially this season thanks to 'Enterprise,' Rogers indicated. "They're no longer consistently at the bottom of the ratings, they've primarily been in fourth place, which is as high as can reasonably be expected against NBC, CBS and ABC. And the cancellation announcement came in before the February sweeps month episodes aired – which may have a negative effect on the show's ratings on its own. People often avoid shows with death sentences already hanging over them. It makes little sense for UPN to make the cancellation announcement this early when February ratings are crucial for ad revenues.

"UPN and Paramount can expect to be hearing from the fans – many of whom would like to see the show go into first run syndication now that the prior seasons are being syndicated. Cable is also a great option for science fiction television these days. But fans won't take this cancellation lying down."

Science fiction fans wishing to support the series are urged to write to Paramount, and those wishing to sign the Paramount, UPN and Viacom petitions are encouraged to send their names and addresses to ENTPetitions@aol.com for addition to the petitions.

"ENTERPRISE PROJECT" TO ADDRESS UPN, PARAMOUNT RE CANCELLATION

Enterprise Project founder MJ Rogers and other members of Enterprise Project will be in Los Angeles on February 10, 2005 to visit Paramount and UPN with press statements and with viewer petitions on behalf of "Star Trek: Enterprise". A second event in New York will occur later in the month.

The visit to Paramount is currently scheduled for 8:00 am, and the visit to UPN at 9:00 am.

All Enterprise fans available are invited to be present for both events, meeting across from both sites on that day.

Additionally, Bonita Fredericy, wife of Enterprise actor John Billingsley ("Phlox"), will be performing in "The Orange Grove" (an adaptation of Anton Checkov's "The Cherry Orchard") in the Los Angeles area that evening. Plans are being made for Enterprise fans to attend the play in the evening.

An additional event is planned for the week of February 21, 2005 in New York at Viacom headquarters. More information will be available later.

Fans who wish to sign petitions, and any who may be able to attend either the Los Angeles or New York event, are asked to email ENTPetitions@aol.com. To sign the petitions, fans are asked to send their names (real names, please) and home towns to the above address.

--- me again
MJ has been talking to people at Paramount about shopping the show to another network and, as I recall, the ones mentioned were SciFi and Spike. If I can find the email amidst the deluge in my box, I will verify or correct this.
Please remember last February when Scott said he was hoping that UPN would cancel Enterprise and the show would get picked up by another network (one that might promote it properly). This is no longer the little tv show that a network didn't care about and NBC cancelled in 1969. It's now a cultural phenomenon with fans worldwide and phrases that have invaded our lexicon. Please make your voice heard.

And this year, befitting the So Cal locale, celebrities will join the crowd: Scott Bakula of Star Trek Enterprise, and Oscar winner Halle Berry are scheduled to run (at least part way--at press time, Berry was considering the companion 5K). It would suit race directors just fine if the high-wattage names help the marathon's growth. CALL TO ACTION -- Enterprise is near the chopping block -- HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
I'm going to add just a bit of commentary before the press release.
I'n not sure if I got all of these links posted previously, but Les Moonves has said something along the lines of -- It's time to take a break from Star Trek. He isn't promising the show will return, and, in light of the network's reliance on ratings, which only count if people are watching the show on Fridays, things look grim: John Billingsley recently mentioned putting himself "out there" in terms of making sure people know he may be available for upcoming series, Jolene and Dominic have both been quoted saying this season is the last, and Scott has said they were hoping for the writers to have a chance to write a decent ending if the show is being cancelled -- which he hopes it is not -- although the writers are already into writing for the 21st episode of a 22 episode season.

None of these things are good signs. (and if you need me to dredge up the links, use the comment link below, to let me know) Therefore -- Star Trek preservation groups are banding together, as they see the seriousness here -- to mount a massive campaign to get Enterprise viewers (and not just ones who are online, we need all Enterprise viewers) to make a stand for the show.

Let's not be like the Angel fans who waited till they got the word on cancellation -- we may not hear from the network till after the sets are struck and the actors are released from contracts. And then it will just be too late.
The #25 listed show among Tivo's season pass customers needs your help. Cause the network won't be looking at that, they will be looking at Nielsen Ratings vs Production Cost. And Nielsen doesn't have a clue.

Joint Fan Campaign to Promote Star Trek: Enterprise

January 21,2005

Becoming proactive is the name of the game in spreading good vibes from viewers about Star Trek: Enterprise’s highly-praised fourth season, so Save Enterprise and The Enterprise Project are joining forces under the banner, "Enterprisefans.com," in order to do just that. The collective group plans to raise the funds needed to publish an ad for Enterprise in USA Today during February sweeps.

The campaign hopes to raise $14,994 and will accept contributions until February 14, 2005 for publication of the ad in the Friday, February 18, 2005, national run edition of USA Today. In terms that call attention to the outstanding quality of Enterprise, the ad will urge television viewers to check out this fifth Star Trek series for themselves and invite them to cut out and sign a declaration of support for the show. The signed statements are destined for Leslie Moonves, Co-President and Co-COO of Viacom, Inc., Chairman and CEO of CBS, and will plead the case for continuing to air Enterprise at least through a fifth season.

All fans of first rate science fiction and drama will want to help in this effort to save the series from untimely cancellation and are encouraged to visit www.enterprisefans.com to find out more about the campaign. Donations can be made via PayPal (preferred method) but the site also includes a link for instructions to send contributions by mail. Funds collected in excess of cost will be donated through one of the recognized international relief organizations to aid the people of South Asia impacted by the recent tsunami.

In the event that the campaign does not reach the monetary goal required to publish the USA Today ad, project leaders will substitute a less costly means of promoting Enterprise and will post alternate plans on the site

NEWS -- Moonves, Scott talk possibility of cancellation to TCA Press Tour
from the CBS/UPN winter press tour as posted on:
SciFi Wire. These are quotes. I'm going to just post the entire article.

Moonves: A Break Good For Trek?

Leslie Moonves—co-president and co-chief operating officer of Viacom, the parent company of CBS, UPN and Paramount—told SCI FI Wire that it may be time for Star Trek to take a break, though he added that no decision has been made on the future of UPN's ratings-challenged Star Trek: Enterprise. Speaking in an interview at the CBS/UPN winter press tour in West Hollywood, Calif., Moonves said: "It's hard to say right now. The ratings aren't great. It may be a franchise that should be rested a year or two. I know the diehards are not in favor of that, but I think if we rested a year or two, it might be a better thing. But we'll see what happens the rest of the year."

Persistent rumors say the show is on its last legs, that UPN has cut its season order from Paramount, which produces the show, and that star Scott Bakula (Capt. Jonathan Archer) is ready to quit. All untrue, cast members told SCI FI Wire. "I'll be disappointed if we wrap up this year," Bakula said in a separate interview. "I'd hate to see it end this year. … We're waiting to hear. It's a funny place to be in. I love the crew. I love the cast. The work situation has been tremendous. We're doing creative work, still, I think. And I know we have a lot of fans out there. So … as a television gig would go, it's a great, wonderful gig. And I'm loving it. So I will be disappointed. But we'll see. It ain't over until it's over."

Bakula and other cast members told SCI FI Wire that they expect, if UPN decides to cancel the show, the network will give producers enough notice so that they can write a finale to the series. But as the writers are currently writing the 21st of 22 season episodes now, that notice would have to come in short order. "We've got to know soon," Bakula said. "So I don't know. They're not under any obligation to let us know. They can do whatever they want to do, and they may. … We don't call those shots."

Even so, Bakula said, "The indication was [and] has been often that this would be our last season. But then … we were told we were going to get an early indication of that so we could wrap the show up in a nice way. And here we are, it's the end of January, and I know that they've broken stories through the 21st [episode]." Enterprise wraps production in March; an announcement about cancellation could be delayed as late as May.

Moonves said that a final decision will depend on how Enterprise performs in the ratings for the rest of the season, which will include new episodes exploring the "mirror universe" introduced in the original Star Trek series and a two-episode arc explaining why Klingons went from smooth foreheads to bumpy ones. How well would the show have to perform to be renewed? "I don't make predictions on what level," Moonves said. "It depends on what development is and what the rest of the schedule is like." But, he added, "I think the show this year has been much better [creatively] than last year. I like the changes that have been made. ... [As for the ratings,] when you're dealing with UPN, you're dealing with different expectation levels." Star Trek: Enterprise airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Quotes from Startrek.com
Jay Schwartz, publicist for Scott Bakula (Captain Jonathan Archer), has denied quotes attributed to him on the Internet this morning saying that the Star Trek: Enterprise star is ready to leave the show at the end of the fourth season.
"It's simply not true, I never said this," he told STARTREK.COM in response to the quote. "People familiar with the way I operate know that this is not how I conduct my business. I would like to nip this in the bud right now."

A little bit more
Apparently, Jay called IESB and attempted to set them straight -- among other comments, which you can find in his statement to them.

For some reason, while apologizing to Jay (and everyone else), they are still upholding the integrity of their sources.

Sounds like they speak out of both sides of their mouth -- but that's just me. For me, Jay's credibility is established; theirs is only taking a worse beating than it already had.

If this is the approach they choose to take, I'd wish them luck -- but that would be hypocritical of me.

Anyway, back to Enterprise save-age. Enterprise Project should have a new campaign coming up soon and in the meantime --

If your area does not show UPN in its official timeslot, you aren't being counted. Period. Neilsen only counts rating for the official Friday night time slot. They do not handicap for preemptions. This problem will increase in the spring when Baseball hits the affiliates in NY, Boston, and LA - major markets both locally and for people who only get Enterprise via DishNetwork. Send a postcard to UPN/Paramount and let them know that you don't appreciate this disenfranchisement and that you want to be counted -- every time it happpens. If you have friends who would watch the show Friday if it were on, let them know too.

RUMOR -- This is a Rumor (You were warned)
There's a rumor being reported on the 'net, and, since you're going to hear it anyway, you might just as well hear it here as well.
I cannot vouch for its veracity, its source or anything else, one way or another. The fact that I cannot should not be taken to mean anything at all, considering that I would not impose on people I know to check on the veracity of a rumor like this. If anyone I know who would do such a thing does so, and I can tell you about it, I will.
In the meantime, certain things should be taken into consideration with respect to this rumor, and you will find that discussion on the SBFF (among other places, I am sure). That's where I've posted my feelings on the issue.

Looking for Enterprise?
I've seen some searches lately for the weekend airings of Enterprise. Here's a helpful hint (since the local stations tend to bounce the show around and no one has a clue where it is).
check out Titan TV's online listings. If you set it up (put in your zip code and cable or satellite company or straight off the air broadcast) you can search the listings for Enterprise (or Star Trek: Enterprise.. not sure what they are listing it as these days, usually, the fewer words, the better chance of finding it). It should at least, tell you the last place the local channel let someone know they were planning to air it at. You can also check out your local UPN affiliate's web page (check at www.upn.com), if they have one and if they keep it up to date.
Finding Enterprise can be quite an undertaking. Good luck!

(and they can also tell all you "Scrubs" fans how to "call Turk" :-)

HOLIDAY THANK YOU TO STAR TREK ENTERPRISE CREW AND PRODUCTION STAFF
December 1 - 8, 2004

WHAT:
Send a holiday greeting card to the crew and production staff of Star Trek Enterprise. Let them know how much we appreciate their hard work creating the show.

WHY:
As a fan of Scott Bakula, I know that he appreciates the people behind the scenes. One "gift" we can give him this holiday season is a card sent to thank the production staff and crew.

This can be a simple way of sharing our holiday wishes for them.

The cards we sent last year were greatly appreciated. When I contacted the production office to clear the project for this year, the lady I talked to was touched that we would think of the crew and production office. As we know, they are crucial to the show but don't usually get thanked. This is one time of year where we can thank them.

WHEN:
Cards should be sent so that they arrive between December 1st to 8th so the cards may be enjoyed before the production shuts down for the holidays.

WHERE:
The address is: Star Trek Enterprise
Paramount Pictures
Room 205 Cooper
5555 Melrose Avenue
Hollywood, CA 90038

HOW:
Each of us can choose how we communicate our thanks and how we identify ourselves. Some may wish to sign only their name, some may wish to identify themselves as fans of Scott Bakula (or another cast member on the show).

Thank you.
Nancy Cotter
A Scott Bakula Fan

News -- Enterprise to go into Syndication
I didn't read the whole article at TrekToday but the part I did read said:
Star Trek: Enterprise will be available for weekend rerun syndication for the 2005-6 television season, Paramount announced in advertisements in Hollywood trade papers this week

this doesn't mean the show won't still run new first run eps.. necessarily... and I hear DVDs are coming as well.

If the show can hold out another season, this could be "a good thing" as we all know it's much easier to addict new viewers with 5 days a week airings. At least it always works for me.
Check out the article at TrekToday for more

Behind the Scenes with Scott, and other news
First off, I want to explain why postings have been rather sparse lately
Mainly I've been distracted by the Red Sox winning the World Series!
This is a big deal to me, not because I care at all about sports, but because I've been aware that the Red Sox never win since 1967, when we watched them lose (to the Cardinals) in my third grade classroom. So, to win, and to me, to win against the team who beat us in the only series I ever watched.. well, after it was over, I celebrated by playing that song which was on the posters by the fans: The Impossible Dream. Of course, I played Scott's version :-)
And for those of you who still don't know, Scott is from St. Louis. I hope that I will get a chance to "thank" him in the next year, for his team "letting" us finally win. (Yeah, I know, they really didn't seem to have much control over that.)

Anyway, now that that, and the Life and Style interview is over, I should note that there was a lot of press coverage for Brent Spiner's arc on Enterprise. All of it was print, and you can find a batch of it at TrekToday or Google News. The articles where Scott was quoted, I tried to post here.

And finally (for now) a major goodie:
John Billingsley did a diary during the taping of CS12 - this coming week's episode - in which, among other things, he gave some insight into working with Scott.
Since the places where the excerpt have been posted will not stay online forever, I'm going to copy it here so it won't disappear entirely.

This is thanks to Moonbeam who posted in on the Logical Choice Forum and if is from the US edition of Dreamwatch.
And btw, if someone could help me find a copy of this issue, I'd really love to buy it.

8/27/04

Writing now a few days later; same episode and I just finished shooting a scene with Scott B. I can't say enough good things about that guy. It's frustrating, actually, when I try to talk about him, 'cuz I can't help feeling that it's going to be read as the kind of empty puffery that all actors habitually engage in (yes you were mahhhvellous dahling). But in fact, I couldn't be more sincere: I think Scott is the most gracious, warm-hearted and generous person I have ever met in this business. I am constantly reminded of this when we work together, and I bring it up now because we just had a scene together that was a touch difficult for both of us and he was, as always, seemingly more concerned about my welfare ( as the other actor) than he was his own.

This scene was a late-night mess hall scene, one of the scenes which I tend to think of as "Uh-oh scenes'. 'Uh-oh scenes' are occasionally forced up us at the last minute because everybody realizes 'Uh-oh" this episode’s going to be short by about a minute an a half.' These scenes, hastily written and shoehorned uncomfortably into a pre-existing script, frequently feel gratuitous and are occasionally embarrassing. Not only do we, as actors, have a slippery grasp of our lines, (these scenes are often delivered to us without much advance warning; it's nobody's fault. I'm not pointing fingers in any way, shape, manner or form -- it's simply the nature of the business we're in) but because they are shot after the bulk of an episode has been finished, one is frequently thinking, 'Shit, this scene makes some of the choices I made in scenes we've already shot feel wrong now.'

...

Anyway, that's a long, long build-up basically, what I was trying to say was that Scott, such a gentleman, is always keenly sympathetic to the other actor's needs, so when we get to the mess hall scene this morning he intuits that I have concerns of the nature I just expressed about Phlox's behavioral credibility and he immediately approaches me about them. No, I'd already dealt with them by talking to the writers and requesting a few tweaks in the scene, but the point is - YOU CAN COUNT ON THE FINGERS OF ONE HAND the number of times an actor will take time to think about the scene he's doing from the point of view of another actor in the scene, much less approach the other actor to say, "Hey, I'll go in and pitch with you if you want to fight for changes." As I've said, I'd already spoken to the writers, who were (and are) very gracious in their own right, and so his intercession wasn't necessary. But as an example of classy behavior in this business, I just have to say - that is rare, rare thing, but everyday behavior from Scott. This is the man who knows everybody's names, remember birthdays, wives' names, etc. and is never less than good-humored and fun to be around, even after 16-hour days...

Fan Project -- Scott Holiday Gift
Along with the rest of the Enterprise cast, for a change, fans will be assembling a holiday gift for Scott.
Please check out the post at the SBFF, including a note from the great folks at Our Little Haven, for the best explanation of the details. Also, if anyone can let me know who is in charge of this project, that would be great.

If you want your name included in the scrapbook as a donor, the deadline is December 1.
The project has other facets as well. Fans are able to participate is as few or as many of the facets as they wish. Or none of course..
For myself, I will say that OLH is a charity that spends none of its incoming donations on administrative costs and is also the charity for which Scott and Chelsea performed I Do, I Do, in St Louis in 2002.
More details are in the above-mentioned post

This is from a post on the SBFF (see side menu for link), as posted by Lisa K
thanks Lisa!

Straight from the mouth of Donald P. Bellisario himself in a live chat today [10/5?] (which I knew nothing about )

Harrisburg, Pa.: "Quantum Leap" was one of the greatest shows of all times. I recall when it was cancelled, someone stating that there is always a possibility that the show could return someday. I know it has been several years, but is there still some chance of reviving the show and giving it a second chance?

Donald P. Bellisario: I am working with Universal's scifi channel to create a new Quantum Leap which would have Stockwell as a regular and Scott Bakula appearing at least in the first episode which would introduce a young female leaper.

Quotes -- More Scott comments on Spiner
The source is SciFi.com, which means I should have already read this, but I don't remember this quote...

"I love Brent," Bakula told SciFi.com. "He's a great guy, and I don't understand all the history of this character that they're bringing on and how they're going to exactly do it, but I know that they're very excited about it, and I know that I'm going to have a lot of stuff to do with Brent. So we've become friends, and, you know, it's fun, and it's stunt casting, yes, but it'll be correct. They're very good about making sure [of] that, because, you know, the fans want it to be right, and we want it to be right, so it'll be good."

News -- Scott Attends Screening
Paramount invited TrekWeb to a special screening of Storm Front last night. Scott was there. Details are in this article at TrekWeb

Here are some pertinent quotes (which I am posting before I even read them myself)

"Seeing that 'previously on ENTERPRISE' clip, which was in our 35mm, and honestly I was nervous about going this way, but as I was watching that I realized that I could not tell. And they were right next to each other. So I stand corrected, and if Rick were here [Rick did not attend the panel], I would stand more corrected."

"I don't have as much time to talk to my kids anymore," Bakula joked about the long waits between takes that have been slimmed down by the new camera. "I think we were all scared at the beginning of the year because we had to get there early and Marvin just yanked the camera out and started shooting... that episode was a seven day shoot and when you think about all the locations and all the intensity and all the prep that went into that, that's a lot of work. We worked hard while we were there, there wasn't much standing around, but at the end of the day the days go faster."

About Brent Spiner:
"Who?" Bakula joked. "Brent wasn't invited tonight?! Brent is a character, we had a lot of fun. He's a very irreverent soul and sort and whatever scenery -- I don't think there is any scenery left in that episode -- but it was fun!"

and there is also this
Asked about the topic of ENTERPRISE DVD sets, which have been rumored to be in the pipeline, Braga confirmed that he and several others involved in the series had just finished a round of interviews for the bonus features on the sets. He couldn't give a firm date on their release, suggesting perhaps May 2005.

"I heard a rumor of May 2005, I got the sense that they were wanting to get them out sooner than they had originally planned."

Aaaah...
Did I ever mention how very much I love electricity? Computers, TV, Air Conditioning? Hey, I even had the courage to open the property tax bill (which I finally located). Now if only I had the guts to look at the hospital bills.. or all the stuff I tossed into my mother's bedroom...

Gloom aside, just two weeks till Enterprise begins again. And I hear there are rumors that they are also getting ready to release the series on DVD. Well.. next year. Maybe next year I can afford it..

I'm now going to go back to drowning myself in a sea of Angel. Hey did anyone notice that the QL reruns on SciFi are even *more* cut than when I first saw them on USA? Yuck.

BTW, Barbara is auctioning off that bear that Scott signed back in February. If the auction isn't over already, take a trip to ebay.com and do a search for bakula. Also, EnterpriseProject does have all the details on their fall project up at their site www.enterpriseproject.org -- with the deposing of Garry Hart as head of Paramount Network Television, supporting the show is far more crucial than ever, so if you haven't checked it out yet, please do.

Crappy Life Updates
I'm stealing Jay's for the moment. I'll remove the well-deserved expletives.

Frances wasn't boring at all. The combination of the steroids my mom is on, the lack of power *all $%^&%@$* week* (thanks to Progress Energy), and the [45 minutes each way?] trip to the neurosurgeon yesterday in an under-air-conditioned car, put her back in the ER last night: pnuemonia.

sigh

The thing better not hit us; I %&#$@$ quit.

I'm quitting along with him. Anyone have a plane ticket to Boston?
The neurosurgeon, with whom I did not speak, said that they will have to operate (good) and there's only a "9 or 10 percent chance of a bad result" (couldn't he have said a 90% chance of a good result?) -- however Jay also said he didn't sound really happy about operating. And also he wants an MRI -- and apparently it has to be in Tampa. Super... Of course they haven't scheduled this yet, or as of yesterday afternoon.. if they have since, we would not know as there is no one at home and, of course, no power for the answering machine.
At the moment, my mother weighs less than I do. How about I take the 125 lbs and she can have the 133?
Sigh squared.
Hopefully some wonderful person, was it amazon.com, has shipped my copy of Role of a Lifetime. Of course I won't have any power to play it with...

Update on that last. After 5 tries to get my password right at amazon, I got this message:

Power still out. Someone tell me what Progress Energy means by midnight Thursday? Is midnight the beginning or the end of Thursday? Temps are 88 in Clearwater. Thankfully there is AC at work.
Jay won't be updating for a while as he's off in Tampa taking mother to the Doctor to see if they can do anything. I'm sitting at work on pins and needles. Oh, and he had to take my car cause his is... not working. Not sure exactly what's wrong with it either... and the fun never ceases.
After a massive cleanup two weeks ago, the ants have returned to our kitchen. I give up... May the next hurricane kill me -- and quickly. Nothing prolonged please, just hit me over the head with a tree and be done with it. (I mean done, no half-assed, half-dead jobs, either)
Back to work. I'll post about Enterprise Project's new fall publicity blitz plan (great ideas, btw) when I have some energy. Or you can check out the post about it on the SBFF. I'm sure the link is in the side menu somewhere (yeah, the side menu of the main page, I know you aren't seeing one on this page, but by now, you probably know how to get there anyway, right?

Tuesday, September 7, 2004 - 10:48 a.m.

Tuesday morning...
Fun holiday weekend... It's so exciting to come to work this morning as there's Internet access (yay) and of course AIR CONDIITIONING. (hey, it's over 80 at least at the moment, and the AC in my car ain't that great either..)
So it's been 40 hours now that the power's been out. The neighbors (who, living on the other side of the street, have power) took some of our frozen food (thanks neighbors) but other than that... wonder if I can find out what happened on Jeopardy last night.. Haven't checked my email since about 7pm, so if you haven't gotten mail from me, that's why. My mother did remark that after she ate dinner last night, she was able to get out of the back seat of my car "all by myself" (and while that's good, we'd like it to be a little more common.) Now to check on that Doctor's appointment for tomorrow, see if the Doctor's office is still there...

Monday, September 6, 2004 - 02:53 p.m.

Update...
Well, the wind and rain have abated somewhat... no flooding in our neighborhood, a couple of trees down (one of which caused what happened in the paragraph below)

Everything is fine here except for the total lack of electricity on our side of the street since 6 last night... which tends to make it really hot, humid, not good for the asthma, and altho the laptop works, we don't have power for the cable modem (and the laptop doesn't have a regular modem) or the router for the wireless card (and i'm having internet withdrawal.. also I'm hot).

So, we've kind of evacuated to my brother's office for a while, where the AC is out but the power and internet are up... And of course my office is open, so I have to work tomorrow. Hopefully there won't be downed power lines and flooding on my route to work...

Happy labor day, everyone! (can someone tape Jeopardy? Ken Jennings returns tonight. Plus, it probably won't be airing here -- we're having hurricane coverage wall-to-wall)

PS (for those praying)-- my mother's surgical consult (can we take this big thing out of her head or not) is scheduled for Wednesday and the area where the doctor's office is, is somewhat inaccessible, so if we could get that straightened out... the waiting is killing me; I'm not up for another delay.

(Boston is the 3rd windiest city in the United States. It’s much windier than Chicago. According to our beloved government, the only cities windier than Boston are Oklahoma City and Butte Montana (if you don’t count the long-winded politicians in Washington). Boston’s average wind speed is 12½ miles per hour. But that “average” is misleading. Sometimes, the air is perfectly still. At many other times, the wind whips by at 100 miles per hour — especially near Boston’s Hancock Tower) --from Tricky Living: Boston. Ah, homesickness... But it's a major storm out there. It will get worse. We're just watching the news till the power goes out, and hoping the walls and windows hold (they should, but my bedroom window has an air conditioner in it, so it's not really sealed up, just sort of covered and taped)

For the real website, use this page. Pitas went down the other day, and I don't totally trust it

Mum, Scott, Stuff..
First up, the doctor's office called this morning to say "oops, we meant to say your appointment was *next* Wednesday" ...joy..

In Scott news, two people sent me emails about Scott interviews in magazines. One was Starburst, and it was interesting. There's more in the article than just the stuff quoted on TrekToday or TrekWeb or whereever I got that alert from (sorry, scattered brain syndrome today).

And appparently there is an article in StarTrek Communicator, but that may be the one I already read. Issue 151? Someone email me and let me know if that's the one that's part two of the one from the spring? Cause if it is, I already have that, and probably you do too. (Don't feel obliged to say anything about my mother unless you want to. It's nice to know people care, but you don't have to pretend to care. If all you care about is Scott that's fine too. Not that I'm minding, but if you're just being polite, you don't have to :-) After all, you come for Scott news, right? I'm just posting the other stuff cause it's easier than emailing all my friends (but Thanks! to all the people who actually do care :-)and told me so. Yesterday was a day worthy of antacids--possibly tranquilizers...).

And for Bonus Points, I hear another hurricane may be coming..

Mommy Update/QL Marathon/ROAL/Birthday
So, while we wait for an appointment with the neurosurgeon to see if they can remove the giant thing from her head (and whether insurance will cover surgery in a 73 year old woman -- in case you were looking for things to pray for..) this morning my mother tells me she's dizzy. Eventually my brother did get around to telling me that yes, they did call the doctor and say it was an emergency, as it could be.. I don't know.. more arrythmias, or something less lethal.
Theoretically, there should be updates on my brother's page..
Sorry for the interruption of your Scott news --

There is supposedly going to be a QL marathon on the 24th on Scifi. Of course, the last time they planned one, they cancelled it, so we will see.
thanks to MW for the QL news.
Don't forget Role of a Lifetime is being released next Tuesday. Not a clue if it will be in the stores, but you can buy it online.
and the deadline for Scott's birthday book is Wednesday..

QL DVD Date and Random Scott News
Well, not news so much as people's comments about Scott, again. :-)
The QL DVD release date, if you don't already know, has been pushed back to December. No reason given. If you aren't getting prices that hover somewhere around $40, you're paying too much. Try Amazon.com or Sam's Club/BJ's/Costco warehouses, or even Walmart. I doubt the extra profits are going to anyone who will affect the outcome of future releases (and correct me if you know I am wrong) so, you know... don't pay more than you have to. But do get it. I don't have to tell you that anyway, right?

In other ...stuff: James Whitmore Jr has been quoted making comments about how great Scott is (cause you never hear that sort of thing from anyone ;-), in the October 2004 issue of Starlog magazine. This quote brought to you by Janek as posted on the trekbbs:

"Scott Bakula is the best," Whitmore praises. "Scott's a great leader and my best friend in the business. I love that guy like a brother. We did Quantum Leap together for years; I acted in a couple and directed 20 of them. Quantum Leap was the perfect show for him, because he can do anything entertainment asks for: He can sing, dance, act and do anything physical. Plus, he's a great looking guy. I can't think of anyone else I would rather be on a set with everyday, Scott takes care of his people, and he's thoughtful and considerate to the other actors. He makes it all about them. That's why I did Enterprise -- he wanted me to come in and try one."
thanks to Janek

...and the man wonders why his fans are so "devoted"... Speaking of which, if you have written to Heather or to me about the birthday project, and neither of us have gotten back to you -- please email me again. It's been a little crazy in my life as you might have noticed (but if you did email me, I did pass it on. I just want to make sure no one gets missed.)
thanks for your patience and everything

Life -- Mom Update
Well, we don't know anything, cause they seem to be refusing to tell us, or forgetting to tell us, but in the meantime, my brother sent me this IM a couple of minutes ago

"Well, the floor tells me she's discharged and waiting for a ride, so, call from the attending or not, I guess I'd better pick her up."

So... maybe someone will eventually get around to telling us whether she's going to die or whether they feel like excavating the big mass in her brain. I hope so, because by the time the information is funneled through her, it comes out kinda more garbled than originally. (sigh)

In the meantime, more prayers are obviously needed. Throw in a couple for my sanity, if you could, (and thanks to the people who emailed me).
Jay will have updates on his page when he actually knows something... He says lots of people are checking in, and most of them are coming from here, so -- thanks :-)

Enterprise Project -- re: Recent Comments by Cast that this is the LAST season
I thought this worthy of sharing after reading recent articles quoting Dominic and Jolene that this is Enterprise's last season. It's from MJ of Enterprise Project. I also printed it out and hung it on my bulletin board at work next to one of my new bumper stickers.

Okay, folks, I DON'T let things like this "ruin my night" -- I let them motivate me to prove them WRONG.

Dominic's fearing it's the last season. Jolene's fearing it. That's not a lot of fun. You need to WRITE to these guys, to the cast, to let them know the fans still love them and the show! One of the greatest things that Bjo Trimble's campaign ever did was work on keeping up cast and crew morale, and that's something everyone here with paper and stamps can do for our guys at Paramount. Do it, and do it PLENTY.

AND -- last season, huh? People were saying that LAST season. People were trying it at the end of SECOND season, as some of us have reason to know -- it's why we STARTED in the first place.

We got a third season. We got a fourth season. Let's prove Jolene, Dominic and company wrong here, and get them -- and us -- a FIFTH season.

This isn't a defeat message -- THEY'RE not UPN. THEY don't cancel the show. THEY would like to be working next year as much as WE want them to be filming. THIS message is a call to arms! Just because the season premiere isn't for a month and a half doesn't mean you can sit back. If you want Season Five, start working on it NOW -- get those letters, emails, and faxes ready if you haven't started up again already.

The Season Premiere project will be announced shortly, so get ready to rock and roll, soldiers!

MJ

Film/Online -- The Ticket
I'm going to copy this from Emma's post on the SBFF

Scott starred in a short film (13min runtime) a couple of years ago called "The Ticket", directed by David Fuller (One of the writers of Necessary Roughness). The film has been shown at several film festivals, and will eventually be shown on the Fox Searchlab website. You can find a photo of Scott from the film here and details of Fox Searchlab's short film programme here.

According to the director, it's scheduled to be the next film featured on the site. Mr. Fuller says the best way to get it shown is to e-mail and express an interest. He also said that he will be telling Scott that his fans have been asking about the film.
thanks to Emma for the info and Barbara for the email address.

Quotes -- Scott at TCA Press Party
from Star Trek.com

At the press party held by UPN in Santa Monica last Tuesday ...

We'll start with Scott Bakula ("Captain Archer"), who says the next season will have "a different kind of vibe" in the aftermath of the last. "We can't go back to exploring the way we did the first two years because we're different people, we're a different ship. We've all had life-altering experiences." He likens it to soldiers coming back from a war. "How do they come back into society, how do they readjust their behaviors? What has happened to them will always be inside of them, every time they're confronted with new situations." His particular challenge is to explore the emotional scars his own character bears from his actions in the Delphic Expanse. "How does he address them, how does he make peace with them, and then how does he move forward? There's no going back for this guy. It's great stuff to be able to contemplate, and great stuff for them to write."

In the midst of dealing with the repercussions of the Xindi conflict, Bakula does hope that, once the current situation set into motion by "Zero Hour" is resolved, the Enterprise crew gets some reward, perhaps "a great reception." "We did save the world, so we should get some attention for that!"

The move to Friday nights for the show is probably a very positive thing, Bakula thinks. "There wasn't anything particularly fascinating about being on Wednesday nights. Actually, I think being away from the Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday UPN thing will allow us to have our own 'place,' and I'm hoping that we have a different kind of success there. I don't know what they're hoping for, but I think we're going to surprise people. The fans come to it wherever it is, and they follow the bizarre UPN schedule — which defies explanation to me — but they've found us, and they continue to hang out with us, and they're faithful all around the world. So, you know, we've got to take care of our end of it, and then the rest will follow.

Concerning reports that William Shatner could guest star on the show this season, Bakula sees the possibility as "amazing" but also "daunting." "You know, I've been such a huge fan of his for so many years, and to have him be on a bridge again, on our bridge in particular, would be mind-boggling."

Quotes -- Scott comments at Press Party
from TV Guide.com
Elsewhere, Star Trek: Enterprise captain Scott Bakula had "no idea" whether Trek icon William Shatner will really appear on the show, but said "it would be fantastic. Unbelievable!" Because Enterprise is technically a prequel to the original Trek, it seems unlikely Shatner could play Captain Kirk. Or is it? "I don't know," Bakula shrugged. "They could work out something with Kirk's genealogy or maybe time travel. I think Shatner will be connected to his Kirk character somehow, though."

TV, Pix -- UPN changes Enterprise Slot
According to at least three sources last night, UPN has changed Enterprise's time slot for the fall to 8 (EIGHT)pm beginning sometime in August, I believe, and continuing.

Enterprise Project now has bumper stickers available with the new time slot (it will be right when they go to the printer) to stick on your cars, lockers, or any surfaces you can find, to let people know of the move -- and with a time slot like that, surfers won't be home to find it, so please help out so people will know to set their VCRs and Tivos!

Pictures of Scott from the Hollywood Bowl and other events over the weekend, can be found on the SBFF (see side menu for a link, as well as wireimage.como, and getty images -- links to both of those are on the calendar, which is fairly current (except that the alert isn't on it, darn. well probably, no one uses it anyway. If I'm wrong on that, please let me know, okay)

QL DVD -- SEASON 2!
Quantum Leap - Season 2 is on the way!
Posted by Gord Lacey
7/12/2004

Here's a bit of news that was left off the recent Universal TV press release: Quantum Leap: Season 2 is going to be released on October 26! Season 2 was the first full season of the series, featuring 22 episodes. This 3 disc set (DVD-18) will carry a suggested retail price of $59.98, the same price as season 1, though season 1 only consisted of 8 episodes.

The information we received lists an English Stereo track, but season 1 contained Dolby Surround, so we expect this is just an error in the information we were supplied with. The set will also contain English, French and Spanish subtitles. No word on extras yet, but we expect that to come before the set ships. We'll have cover art available when it's released.

DVDs -- QL / TV Guide
In case you forgot -- the QL season 1 DVDs were released on June 8th. They are in stores, online... I got mine from DeepDiscountDVD.com, friends got there's at Walmart, Costco, Sam's club.. I think the best price i heard was just under $35, if you don't have them yet.
also
The DVD set will be available here in the UK 15th November according to ebay. this info is from DebbieO, who also notes "At the moment I'm unable to find any more info."

Additionally, next week's TV Guide has a full page on why they believe Enterprise was picked up for the fall. It quotes "sources." There are no new quotes from Scott (or anyone else officially involved) and the pic of Scott is one of the publicity shots for season 3. So it's not quite Scott news. But it does make you want to run out and buy more licensed Trek merchandise...
Excerpts from the article are at trektoday and trekweb, but they are taking the The glass is half full approach, and they aren't quoting the entire article... if you don't get tvguide, and you want a copy of the scan, email me. My POV is that a full page in TV Guide is rarely a bad thing.

And here is a press release from Enterprise Project

May 20, 2004

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: MJ Rogers

The Enterprise Project (www.enterpriseproject.org) sends its thanks to UPN, Paramount, and Viacom for announcing the renewal of "Star Trek: Enterprise" for a fourth season.

"We're pleased to hear that they've actually listened to the fans," says MJ Rogers, founder of the Project, which is the largest and longest-running organized fan group working to keep the show on the air. "Although the ratings haven't been as high as those for some other shows, we don't believe that the ratings accurately reflect the show's viewership, and the outpouring of support for the show reflects that."

Much of that support, for the past year, has come from Enterprise Project members who have written to UPN and Paramount, worked at science fiction conventions handing out literature and running panels, and placed full-page advertisements in the Hollywood Reporter supporting the show and demanding its renewal.

Another advertisement from the group and from other Star Trek: Enterprise fan groups will run in the weekly edition of Hollywood Reporter on May 25, the day before the airing of the season finale. This advertisement will thank UPN for renewing the series.

"Trek fans have been reputed to be argumentative and ungrateful in the past," says Rogers. "We want to get rid of that image." The Project is also sponsoring a "Thank You" campaign to UPN to let the network know that fans appreciate the renewal of the series, which was at risk of cancellation.

Rogers says that the credit for lobbying UPN and Viacom goes not only to members of Enterprise Project, but to the thousands of fans, both in other groups and individually, who have worked to help keep the series on the air. Rogers cautions, however, "this doesn't mean that Season Five is guaranteed either. Sometimes the price of Trek is eternal vigilance by fans."

Over forty fan groups have assisted Enterprise Project in sponsoring ads and in promoting the show at science fiction conventions in the past year, and the Project also thanks them for all of their hard work.

This marks the second time in the history of the Star Trek franchise that a Trek series was kept on the air after a fan campaign successfully persuaded a network to renew the series. The original series was to be cancelled after its second season, but the network was persuaded to give the series one more year after a fan campaign was organized by Bjo Trimble.

Rumor Control: Enterprise Not Yet Officially Picked Up
Got this from MJ of Enterprise Project at 1:07 this afternoon

As of one minute ago.

NO word on renewal, and NO pre-production going on yet. No production of any kind going on yet, and only one or two people even around.

They are not starting anything until THEY have word on May 20. THEY don't consider themselves renewed.

End quote. UPN will announce its fall schedule in NYC on Thursday. Thank you cards for picking up the show should be sent to UPN, requests for other networks to pick up the show if cancelled should be sent to Paramount...

As you already know, this week and next are the last two Enterprise episodes of this season. (and wow, I've loved season 3!)

Enterprise Project -- Last Big Push, Part B
Here is the link for the May 21 Thank You UPN/We Want Enterprise (on *your* Network) Ad
In case you were wondering, part A is that MJ has stated that it is now time to start petitioning (writing letters, asking) Paramount to shop the show to other networks if UPN should be (insert adjective here) enough to not pick up the show (which Scott said yesterday on Wayne Brady that, no, they don't know yet, and that alternate endings for the season finale were shot).

Rumor Control: Enterprise Not Yet Cancelled
There has been an email circulating on the 'net from a group with good intentions, that the show has been cancelled. The body of the message clarifies that the headers was a scare tactic designed to get your attention.
If you were upset by this message, feel free to let the sender know that there are more positive ways to inform the uninformed than by sending factually incorrect headers in messages to fans. The situation is still serious to extremely serious, but there are better ways to make a point without sacrificing credibilty.
MJ, of the Enterprise Project has requested that this month, until UPN unveils its fall schedule on May 20, our last big push be to snail mail, fax or call UPN with the simple message:
"When's the premiere date in September for ENT Season 4?"

UPN Phone: 310-575-7000
UPN Fax: 310-575-7210
snail mail addresses can be found at www.enterpriseproject.org

Scripts are being worked on for a mini-arc for the beginning of season 4, based on the last eps of season 3. Set construction for season 4 is tentatively to start May 12. Cast is cautiously optimistic. But CBS president Les Moonves has been known to change his mind and go back on his word in the past, and this time, he has not even *given* his word.
Anything you can do to spread awareness of the show's plight to viewers or let the network know you want Enterprise to continue -- without resorting to uncheckedd "facts" or hyperbole -- is appreciated by all of us who spent years not being able to watch Scott weekly, and Scott has said he appreciates our efforts as well.
Stamp out rumors, Support the show.
As a Scott fan, I thank you.

Over Five Hundred Starfest Fans Show Support For ENTERPRISE and Enterprise Project

Enterprise Project www.enterpriseproject.org attended Starfest 2004 in Denver, Colorado from April 16-18, with a table in the fan club rooms and live interviews on I-Sci-Fi (www.i-sci-fi.com).

Five hundred Star Trek: Enterprise fans signed postcards as part of Enterprise Project's "Bug UPN" postcard campaign, and more took flyers explaining the current situation regarding the show's renewal status. Additionally, Enterprise Project founder MJ Rogers and co- moderator PJ presented a panel on "Enterprise and the future of Trek," discussing ways for fans to promote the show. The standing- room-only panel attracted nearly one hundred fans anxious to discuss their feelings about the show and the franchise.

"The enthusiasm fans have for the series is incredible," said Rogers. "However, many fans have had no idea of the possibility that the show won't be back next season. This was an important way to get the word out, especially since UPN has said that the renewal decision would be made this month."

The group also held a raffle of Enterprise and other Trek memorabilia, including action figures, books, and autographed photos, with proceeds covering costs of printing and mailing the postcards for the fans.

Captain TRexx of I-Sci-Fi interviewed Rogers, PJ, and another member of Enterprise Project during the convention, and promoted not only the group but the show and the convention appearance of Enterprise actor Dominic Keating (Lieutenant Malcolm Reed).

The Project was assisted at Starfest by members of the USS Pioneer and of USS Ticonderoga, as well as by several of its own members.

ZERO HOUR -- It's time for UPN to decide Enterprise's fate
with TV Guide reporting that the series' fate is still up in the air, and Marc Berman of MediaWeek still prophesying that it will be cancelled, never let it be said that one dedicated Scott fan cannot make a difference. If you've ever watched Quantum Leap, you know better. :-)
Join the Enterprise Project in their April Campaign.
UPN will decide sometime this month whether to renew it's most popular but also most expensive show or to replace it with cheaper to produce, ratings-winning mind-numbing, reality series.
UPN has left the promotion on Enterprise in the hands of its fans, many of whom still don't believe the series is in any danger. So tell your friends, family, co-workers, total strangers -- as Scott said, "people on the street" -- and then tell UPN.

Press Release

April 2, 2004

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT:

Recently, the Enterprise Project spearheaded Operation Open Letter. This letter, directed to UPN's Dawn Ostroff and Les Moonves of CBS, was published in the Hollywood Reporter (24 February) in support of Star Trek: Enterprise. More than $4,000 was raised for the ad, with a surplus of funds donated to charity.

Project members are now pleased to announce a new campaign: In keeping with the idea of "bugging" UPN and the other powers that be, Enterprise viewers from all over the world will send an avalanche of unique postcards, many of them featuring the Xindi Insectoid "Baby Bugs."

These projects demonstrate that the fans of the long running and beloved Star Trek franchise enjoy and respect the series so much that they have taken upon themselves the task of promoting it.

Fans of Enterprise hope that UPN, CBS, Paramount and parent company Viacom will come to realize that millions of viewers worldwide will continue to "bug" them until the show is renewed for a fourth season. Most of these viewers have no Nielsen boxes or any other means of proving how large and loyal an audience Star Trek: Enterprise commands.

Fans expect a huge mail-in response to this campaign and invite all who wish to support Enterprise to participate by sending postcards during the month of April. They hope it will convince network executives that Enterprise has a large, loyal and involved audience that is highly attractive to potential sponsors and that the series is eminently worthy of renewal.

For more information and addresses, please visit our web site: www.enterpriseproject.org

For those wishing to create their own Postcards, samples and graphic files are available at Apryl's website. You will also find the addresses to mail to, a database of newpapers and publications to send this press release to (and please, if you know of any fannish groups online or off, send it to them as well -- never, never underestimate the power of the 'net).. and don't forget The Enterprise Project Website.

At the reception following the Hamilton Benefit, Scott said he appreciates all our efforts, as do the cast and crew at Paramount. So let's give this one last big push.
All I want for my birthday is another year of getting to watch Scott..

The last 6 new episodes of the season begin on April 21 at 8pm

From TV Guide.com's Ask Matt (Roush)
Question:
Watching Enterprise, it's obvious to me that the producers are going all out to make it good — almost to the point of excess. Is it just me, or does it seem like all the pressure put on Enterprise this season sort of undermines the natural evolution of the series? Even TNG and DS9, both shows considered to be great Trek, weren't all that interesting in their first three years but they eventually found their voices and greatness. Are we pushing Enterprise too hard? If it comes back for another season, don't you think it is in danger of burning itself out? — Paul T.

Matt:
I don't think I've ever considered an argument in which a show could achieve greatness too quickly. More and more, network TV is an unforgiving environment, and I think it's fair to say that a show needs to find its feet and its following a lot sooner nowadays. That it took Enterprise three seasons to "evolve" into a more compelling series is not a positive, no matter its predecessors' track record. This season's Xindi conflict has recharged the show's creative batteries. If the show does return next season, I'm hoping this will be the launching pad to even greater adventures. I think it's more the case of the general audience burning out on Trek, and it's up to Enterprise to reverse the trend.

Meanwhile trektoday reports that William Shatner is "99% sure Enterprise will return" and that SyFyPortal has a RUMOR that UPN has picked up Enterprise for 12 episodes. THIS IS AN UNCONFIRMED RUMOR. Friends are doing research.. so far no confirmation.

A friend reports that the first season of Enterprise is available for presale on DVD in the UK (region 2 for those of you in the US for those of you who most likely have only region 1 players.) Try Amazon... I didn't hear a release date on that one.

Scott comments -- Bellisario Star
from the SJ Mercury News

LOS ANGELES - Donald P. Bellisario, ...took his own leap Tuesday when his name joined more than 2,000 others on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Scott Bakula, who starred in the Emmy-winning science fiction series "Quantum Leap," joked about his work with Bellisario, who has been working on TV shows for 30 years.

"The other day there was a 'Quantum Leap' marathon on television somewhere," Bakula said. "My 8-year-old blurted out, 'did you ever get to meet God?' I responded, saying, 'meet him, I worked with him for 4 1/2 years!'"

Picture -- Well...
...I needed a new one, and this was all I could come up with that I knew wasn't anyone else's. This is, I think, from Gail E., in April of 2002, and proves that for at least one split second (which I can't remember at all) Scott and I both looked at each other at the same time. And no, I didn't see the color of his eyes.. I was too busy trying to hold on to my train of thought! (which he can derail quite easily, just by looking at me)

Fan Stuff -- Rapidly approaching DEADLINES and LIMITED TIME Bakula things
Sorry, it's been an insane week at my house -- new job (constantly rewriting my notes!), new laptop (can't find the right keys half the time, plus installing needed stuff takes time -- right now links are not live due to lack of my clipboard extender), computer crashes.. Here are the things you need to know *this week* (And no, I have not dropped to just *weekly* updates)

The deadline for the Captain's Chair Christmas Project
to encourage our favorite cast and crew is.. well sometime this week. Enterprise will be going on Christmas break soon, and no one will be at work to see your good wishes, so, they are scheduled to land.. I think it's by the 5th. Don't miss the ship! Check out their Project Page for more details (and those dates I can't remember)
http://www.thecaptainschair.com/thankyouproject.htm

Quantum Leap DVD's
More deadlines! It sounds like it's really real this time!!
Project Quantum Leap recently spoke with Deborah Pratt and the Release of Season One is in the planning! They have even contacted Scott regarding it!
What extra's would you like to see on QL DVD's?
Requests for DVD Extras and other goodies are now being taken and more details can be found by visiting http://www.projectquantumleap.com
thanks to Donna Dee for both of the above (and all the hard work in passing our wishes along!), and also to Sharon Major (live links to come when clipboard express gets installed on this machine, but please, don't wait! -- copy and paste!)

Bakology Latest Update limited viewing time (and you will need all of it!)
The audio/visual, chronological tour of Scott's career continues at http://bakology.bakulagames.com-- I'm not sure what year they are in now, but if you missed anything before Quantum Leap, you want to get there and be prepared to spend some time! Don't miss out! AV files are large and are therefore only posted for a short period of time. If you aren't hooked into the Scott fan base already, here is stuff you may have missed. Maybe even if you are (We haven't reached Romance Romance yet).
Sounds like I'm selling something, doesn't it? But these two women do this all for nothing (they don't even have advertising on the site, and Layla pays for her own server space), to share with the rest of the fans and the newbies! If you like the site, consider dropping them a thank you note!
My continuing thanks to Layla and Helene for this LABOR of love.

Since I don't tend to be that masochistic, I ignored the ratings last year. Having joined the Enterprise Project, I can't do that anymore, so now both UPN and the ratings guy at Media Week are on my hit list.. (just spouting hyperbole, I've never so much as punched anyone..in case you are the FBI). Anyway--this week, Marc Berman at MediaWeek (for those of you who haven't been playing along at home, he is no apparent relation to Rick Berman) had to print this:

With its largest audience and highest ratings since Feb. 2003, Star Trek: Enterprise is beginning to make inroads opposite the WB's Smallville.
Read it for yourself, with the actual numbers if you wish, at Media Week ...before or after you read more of Scott's Interview with Star Trek Monthly at SciFi Pulse (I'd suggest "before")

they're all of Scott... even if you don't usually "do" pictures--go. :-)

Over at the WB, and thanks to Smallville (#4: 5.9/ 9), the network remains up year-to-year on Wednesday by considerable proportions. Smallville beat UPN's Star Trek: Enterprise (#6: 4.1/ 6) by 44 percent last night. At 9 p.m., although the frog net's Angel (#5: 4.0/ 6) continues to have a considerable advantage over UPN's competing Jake 2.0 (#6: 2.7/ 4), retention out of Smallville -- 68 percent -- could be better. Retention for Jake 2.0 out of Enterprise was even worse at 66 percent.

Ratings -- Twilight -- Final -- UP!!
up and still up! according to an article at Trek Today:

Final Nielsen ratings for Star Trek: Enterprise's "Twilight" show an increase of nearly half a million viewers over the week before. [snipped actual numbers]

4.07 million viewers watched the show, compared to 3.7 million for "The Shipment" last week and 3.46 million for "Exile", the last new episode before that. The numbers for "Twilight" are on par with those for the season premiere, "The Xindi."

for those actual numbers and the part I cut out of the article, check it out at Trek Today

Chat -- NEW Chat with Scott!
Got an email from Marc,
The next chat with Scott will be November 19 at 4:30 *Eastern* Time, Scott's schedule permitting (he's often late due to having to fit it between the scenes he is shooting, but it give you that feeling of *being there* :-) at StarTrek.com

If you are preparing, remember you need a Java Enabled Browser, and if you have any pop-up stoppers running -- turn them off. Take a test run.. Really! It's better than trying frantically at the last minute. The page you will probably be trying to access (if it hasn't moved) is here. If you get there, and there is an empty chatroom, you're probably all set.

Also if nothing has changed, questions can be mailed to bakulachat@startrek.com

HAPPY -- Twilight
Just still floating over Twilight. I didn't get a lot of sleep. Thanks to the two people who emailed me. :-) Don't forget to write to UPN. Ratings are still under the WB, and it's not true that one person can't make a difference. If you think so, go watch the episode again ;-)
Many hugs and kisses to Mike Sussman. You are my hero. (Scott is a foregone conclusion. I wouldn't be doing this if he were not.)

Twilight -- Best of Season?
Not having seen it yet, and believe me, that shows great restraint on my part, as a friend has a sat dish and keeps pestering me to watch his copy early, I am anxiously awaiting tonight's ep. For that Best of Season review, you can check out TrekToday.
If, after seeing, you have any comments on the ep (or any specific things about it you liked) that you wish to share, I'd love to hear them! My address is at the bottom of this post.

"Among the netlets, the WB edged UPN, 3.9 million viewers to 3.5 million. As UPN predicted, Star Trek Enterprise rebounded from a lousy October. Its 3.7 million viewers (103rd place) represented a 42 percent surge from the week before, when the World Series ruled."

I've been disconnecting all night, but let's give this another shot
Helene has posted,on the SBFF, excerpts from an article in the latest Starlog, regarding Scott and his fellow cast members reactions to the reviews and the ratings.
Just read it.
also someone sent me... somewhere.. something good about the ratings. I'll try to dig it up again. If the computer doesn't go sailing out the window in the next five minutes.
I don't have to beg any of you to watch Twilight, right?

Ratings -- 10/29, Another View
from SyFy Portal
Audience Erosion on Enterprise not as bad as Smallville..

article below by Michael Hinman

While "Smallville" on The WB is beating out "Star Trek: Enterprise" on UPN, one of the things that does jump out at ratings analysts is the fact that an audience erosion continues for "Smallville" while the latest Star Trek series seems to have stabilized.

According to Nielsen Overnight Metered Markets on Wednesday, "Smallville" scored a 5.9 rating/9 share, nearly doubling the audience that has tuned in for "Enterprise," which scored a 3.9/6. However, that score was a 6 percent drop over the previous week for "Smallville" while "Enterprise" actually gained nearly 7 percent more audience than its previous original episode which aired two weeks ago. And "Smallville" had a special guest appearance by Michael McKean to introduce the popular genre character Perry White.

Since the beginning of Star Trek's season Sept. 10, "Enterprise" has lost just 11 percent of its audience through seven episodes. "Smallville," on the other hand, has lost more than 12 percent through just five episodes. While "Smallville" has more audience to lose, the continued erosion has to be a concern of The WB executives.

there's a bit more over there

Bakula Productions News -- New Story Bought, to be Pitched
I saw this recently, can't remember where.. but I probably saved it. This is from KATV.com

Little Rock (AP) - The family of a north Arkansas man who emerged from a 19-year coma could get some financial relief from Hollywood producers interested in telling his story.

39-year-old Terry Wallis of Big Flat had been in a coma of varying degrees from a 1984 car crash until July, when he suddenly said "Mom" and "Pepsi" to his mother, Angilee Wallis.

His story spread worldwide, and after an extended bidding war, Scott Bakula Productions agreed to a six-figure deal for the right to make a screenplay.

Bakula and partner Tom Spiroff will pitch the story to television networks in coming weeks.

Wallis' mother says Wallis has progressed to the point where he can start conversations, rather than just say words. But he needs more therapy.

An agent is setting up a nonprofit organization, TerryWallisFund.org, to pay for Terry's care. Because of the arrangement, the proceeds of the movie deal and donations to the family won't affect the Wallises' Medicaid status.

ah, here is the elswhere

found at http://www.publishersmarketplace.com/members/MetropolLiterary/ on 10/24..

FILM RIGHTS option to Scott Bakula Productions and Paramount Pictures for the incredible story, “Miracle at Mountain Home, The Terry Wallis Story,” the globally reported and inspiring story of the Arkansas family that kept hope alive for 19 years after their son/brother lay comatose and paralyzed after surviving a deadly (another in the car died) car crash in 1984. This is the tale of one family’s struggle to retain faith in a miracle that came against any reasonable odds two decades later. This is the now infamous story of Terry Wallis.

There's an article in the Courier Press (I'm still looking for a city) which goes into some detail regarding the November sweeps episodes. Unfortunately, either I read the article too fast, or this publication thinks Twilight is airing tonight (it's next week, don't miss it!) Thank God for my own computer!! Just posted this from my brother's laptop, with a thumb mouse and Linux!! and it posted as a blank entry

BEAM MY DINNER UP, PLEASE Currently serving as the captain of "Enterprise," the latest TV show in the "Star Trek" franchise, Scott Bakula brought a large contingent of his family to dine at Skipjack's in the Back Bay the other night. One spy told us, "He is quite a hottie, signing autographs and being very nice." Officially, all the restaurant would tell us is that "he was very pleasant" and seemed "to have a great time." No captain's platter or the like for dinner. Bakula enjoyed Skipjack's tuna sashimi and the lobster.

Episodes -- Scott -- More Shirtless, More Driven, More good Quotes from Jolene
I can't help it, I'm just seriously tired of that uniform. Plus we have historical confirmation of what Scott removing his shirt can do for the ratings ;-) (plus I'm posting this while reading the article, so the good stuff is last). And also, my brother is right about being able to drop anchor links into other people¹ webpages. And as soon as I remap mz kezboard out of Polish..
Okay. You just don't miss those "y's" till you lose them..
This article at TrekToday, from an interview at Zap2it, has an intriguing quote from Jolene..

The NX-01's commanding officer dreamt up some fantasy situations which involved himself and T'Pol in a state of undress in the decontamination chamber. Blalock said that won't be the last time Archer will be seen without his shirt on.

"Actually, as we speak, we're shooting a scene like that," she said. "We always like that, makes the day go by nicely. Thank God, he's got a kick-ass body."

and from the original article
"It's always fun to have more action, more story line, more reason for doing what we're doing. The characters, especially Scott Bakula's character, Capt. Archer, are going to be more driven."

and

"He just amazes me. He's an amazing father, amazing husband. If you had one person to model your life after, it would be him, as far as his health, his work ethic, his leading abilities. It's quite admirable."

thanks to TrekToday for the lead, which Google News Alerts apparently hasn't located yet

There is a short article about casting for the episode Carpenter Street at FilmJerk.com Not really any mention of Scott past his name

In short, they are down. On the other hand, next week UPN plans to run actual publicity! In the meantime, head back to the phones and the letter writing, or perhaps telling your friends that there seems to be a new trend of Scott taking his shirt off more often ;-) (hey, this is a Scott site, right?)
Actually I liked the ep but that could have been more due to the many closeups of Scott.. I'm not objective. Still, I do like the way the writers are working on keeping the continuity with previous episodes in the arc.
Repercussions from both the transformation into a Lokek and the effects of the lack of shielding on the ship have Archer having nightmares and rashes, and last night I actually found myself involved enough in the episode itself to start talking to the TV. So I'm guessing the "predictability" is gone. Which can only be a good thing.

Chat -- An Answer from Scott on Publicity and How We Can Help
First off, no one got the transcript... so we are hoping StarTrek.com will have it up really soon.
Today's chat with Scott, though delayed for at least an hour, also lasted at least an hour, and was one of the best ever (It ranked right up there with the chat at the Palace, promoting I can't remember what, and the first Trek.com chat on Sept. 10).
Wonderful questions ranged from specific episodes to snowboarding and if the official site had the bad luck we all had (I hit a wrong button and wiped out my whole window) I will be heartbroken... (yeah, I'm a staunch believer in Murphy's Law).
btw, the episode tonight was great as well. I'm going to have to watch it again to see just why... I'm hoping it's more than just my being shallow...
Anyway, in response to my question from the last chat, that Marc asked again, about what the fans could do to help promote the show, we got this

Well you know, word-of-mouth is a very big thing. I will say, happpily that UPN has agreed to go in with Paramount on an advertising campaign for this next week's episode, which is "Impulse," so there will be more commercials, print, for next week's show. Which is great. But I believe, and my experience with Quantum Leap provided this, that the fans make a difference. And the fans can get the networks' attention by writing in, by e-mailing, by doing all those things that are available. Of course, the obvious thing is if you know someone with a Neilsen box, to make sure that they are tuned in to us. But I think that the fans can make some noise.

If you like the show. For instance, if you see a magazine, like TV Guide that's ripping us up one week, write them a letter in support! and maybe that letter will get in TV Guide three weeks later, or two weeks later.

thanks so much to PJ in NH for capturing that part (and did Scott actually use the word "email" in a sentence? wonders will never cease!)

so, again, you heard the man--write, call, email, let your voice be heard. Addresses and numbers can be found at the Enterprise Project's website.
With the competition from Smallville tonight, we need to do whatever we can to offset the voices of those who actually have Neilsen boxes!

Note the good news of UPN deciding to promote its own show!! Three rousing cheers for UPN (and hey, write and praise them -- maybe we can inspire them to do more!)
extra thanks to Marc, for listening (and selecting a larger variety of questions, and posting that new picture -- that's mentioned in the chat as well) and to Scott for staying so long and being so open to talking to us
Really good questions everyone!

Ratings -- 09/24, Extinction
Ratings appear to continue to be rising. Since I have trouble wading through them, if you are interested, the overnights are in this article at TrekToday.

If you were less excited about last night's ep than you were about Anomaly, hang in there, I've read about Twilight and it sounds really good!

Again a reminder that the "showdown" with Smallville is next week, so "pack up the babies and grab the old ladies" and let's really make a showing of viewers to let Paramount and UPN know that we are watching Scott. (for those who argue that it's just Scott we are interested in, I remind you, he is in their show so if we watch him, we are watching their show.)And if the genre fans (and even a bit of mainstream)switch to Smallville, we won't have a show to watch Scott in. (If you love Smallville, remember, that's why they invented VCRs;-) )

Only slightly slower than the fans, The Official Site now has its transcript online. Guessing they know how anxious we all are.
Editorially, I liked the first chat better as it covered a wider variety of questions, not just pertaining to the show itself and the upcoming episode. Just a thought for the producers :-) Maybe next time we could mix things a bit? We still thank you for the chance to talk to Scott.
My cookies are burning...
Now that I'm back, I'd like to clarify the last question, as it was mine. And in their editing of it, they kind of changed its meaning to...

[As an actor] are you allowed to appear on any shows of your own volition?
Pam from Boston
The remainder of the question
Is there anything the fans can do? You should see the fans brainstorming ideas to promote the show themselves (and congrats to them for all their work!).
should prove I was asking about promotional appearances (talk shows and the like). Maybe Scott got it, maybe he wasn't sure. He mentioned both talk shows and episodic TV. Alas, he never had time to get to the second part of the question.
My praise of the fans' dedication and hard work stands.

Mention -- From PA local TV guide
from the TV Pipeline column in the local [somewhere in PA] TV listings yesterday morning:

Q. Years ago, there was a short-lived sitcom about a slightly seedy lawyer who set up office in a strip mall. The show featured DeLane Matthews, who recently resurfaced as Ryan's mom on The O.C. I haven't seen her in anything in between, so can you fill in the missing years? --Michael J., Rouses Point, N.Y.

A. Actually, that was Daphne Ashbrook of JAG, not DeLane Matthews, guest-starring on The O.C. Eisenhower & Lutz, the 1988 lawyer-in-a-strip-mall sitcom you remember, was Matthews' second series, in which she co-starred with Scott Bakula and a pre-Home Improvement Patricia Richardson. After that, she was in two more flops before landing the role for which she is best known, as Beth Barry on Dave's World.

Ratings -- 09/17, Anomaly Demographics
There's nothing here I can cut... so, from this article at TrekWeb.com

As reported on Friday (story), the second episode of ENTERPRISE's third season, "Anomaly," improved on the season premiere in many ratings figures. Despite a slightly lower overnight rating, the final numbers for "Anomaly" revealed a 5% jump in overall viewers (4.29m vs. 4.07m), making it the most-watched episode since February's "Future Tense" (4.62m).

TV Barn reports that the show also demonstrated significant improvements in all the major demographic categories. In the Adults columns, "Anomaly" saw +27% among adults 18-34 (1.4/5 v. 1.1/4), +13% among adults 18-49 (1.8/6 v. 1.6/6), +20% among persons 12-34 (1.2/4 v. 1.0/4).

Breaking it down by gender, "Anomaly" also attracted the most women 18-34 and 18-49 since February. The second episode in particular saw gains of +20% among females 12-34 (1.2/4 v. 1.0/4), +40% among women 18-34 (1.4/5 v. 1.0/4), +25% among women 18-49 (1.5/5 v. 1.2/4). Improvements among the traditional male audience were also dramatic: +27% among men 18-34 (1.4/6 v. 1.1/5), +10% among men 18-49 (2.2/7 v. 2.0/7) and +12% among men 25-54 (2.9/8 v. 2.6/8).

Additionally, the site reports, that ENTERPRISE ranked number two among men 25-54 (2.9/8) for the eight o'clock hour, coming in behind only ABC's comedies.

For more on the show's rating performance, check out this page.
Now, as MJ would tell us (my email is screaming at me ;-) ) this is Great News! but let's not lie down on the job. The showdown with Smallville is next week, and we should all be calling, watching, writing, and tying our friends to chairs at our houses (heck, have a party--some people are!) or at least begging them to watch the show. Or just reminding them.
Scott's chat is at 4pm ET/1pm PT today.

Print -- Star Trek Monthly, Scott quotes
ENTERPRISE cast interviews from issue 109, October 2003, Star Trek Monthly

during filming of the third episode of season 3...

At a meeting with executive producers Rick Berman and Brannon Braga back in February, Enterprise's chief star, Scott Bakula, realised that the show needed to adapt, but thankfully they all had broadly the same ideas about how it ought to change. "I didn't have to [make a case] at all," he says. "It was me saying, 'We have all these issues on the table. My character needs to address them. What are you guys thinking about?' And they stopped me before I even finished, saying, 'Let us tell you what we want to do.' Believe me, it's hard to explain how much they care. These guys have spent the entire hiatus trying to position the show and new scripts and new ideas. They're rethinking everything. They spend all of their energy creating this new place and now they're peopling it and we're discovering it."

The producers, Bakula feels, have been responsive to public opinion. "Happily, they haven't said, 'Screw you, everybody, we're just going to keep doing what we've been doing because we can.' They listened and they take it very much to heart. They've been here a lot longer than I have been, and because of that, we're marching off into a new direction. They haven't said to me what the whole season's going to be. I feel good about what we've done. I'm, extremely excited about what we're doing this year and I'm really happy with the opportunity to play a guy who changes on a long-running series, which you don't usually get to do."

While polite, the cast reveal some exasperation about negative press coverage of Enterprise's second season. Bakula notes that comparisons between the Nielsen ratings of Enterprise and those of its Star Trek predecessors are more than a little unfair. "If it's a question about the second year numbers compared to Voyager's second-year numbers, well, that was nine years ago. The television world has changed a lot in nine years."

"The reality is," Bakula says, "we can't... worry every day. If you pick up the TV Guide and it says, 'Can Star Trek be saved?', two months later, it's 'Can The West Wing be saved?' People are trying to sell magazines and I appreciate that, and I participate in that also. I care about the work that we do. That's all I can do. I can carry the enthusiasm about the franchise and these characters and what we're trying to say about humanity, because I feel very strongly about that.

"My commitment is to making this the best possible show that we can do," he concludes, "and to that end, we're all working very hard. [I will] carry that as long and as hard as I possibly can, until they tell me, 'There's no trailer for you at work any more.' Then I'll go home."

Ratings -- 09/17, Anomaly, and putting my telephone where my mouth is
A full disection of the ratings for this week's ep can be found at TrekWeb.com
I figure I might as well read them.
Also, I called CA today. Left one message in a voice mail and talked to a P.A. at Enterprise. As I was explaining that many of my friends are looking forward hoping we will get some episodes exploring how peeved Archer is and why, and how do we stop swinging from giddy overeagerness to "let's kill everyone" and possibly find some balance, the P.A. told me they are planning some "lighter episodes." Okay, but not what I asked.
There's nothing wrong with a little darkness as long as you explore it and figure out how we got "from there to here." I think there's a bit of that in Star Trek VI, actually. (from the days when you had to force me to watch Trek)
And I was far more literate last night at midnight...
And... UPN will love me for this:
Just tonight I watched the tape of Jake 2.0 episode 1.2 ;-)
and it was good! They apparently have their own holodeck.. our hero learns how to be one, and the geeky girl and the geeky guy are fairly endearing, though they could lose the rap music. Between my comments at various times that the two of them reminded me of Willow and Xander, respectively.. The series is Exec Produced by David Greenwalt, who had/has a big stake in Angel. Though the dialog isn't as good as Buffy, it echoes.. and it's fun. And, okay, I've seen enough dismembered body parts this season now. UPN, Please stop?
My Wednesdays are going to be chock full of TV goodness. We're watching 3 shows at 9pm. The West Wing is still first. And David E Kelley wrote the season opener for Boston Public -- and it showed.
Let's get those Enterprise ratings up (adopt a Neilsen family! or better, call or write). I want to stay a happy camper.

Review -- Salon.com
I didn't see this review at Salon.com on September 10 (not due to the barrage of non-publicity) but it's really good.
Here's a snippet

"Star Trek's" new moral frontier
UPN's "Enterprise," back for its third season, has saved the Trek franchise with messy, moving and ambiguous story lines torn from the 21st century.
While there are no Scott quotes (it's a review) it's worth clicking and reading an ad to read the whole thing.

Chat -- Scott Chat Update
The chat Monday at StarTrek.com will be held at 4pm ET/1pm PT, as Scott's production schedule allows.
I'll let you know when I find some directions, just in case they moved it...
Actually, I have a note from a supervising producer at startrek.com and part of it reads as follows:

Scott is very interested in connecting with his fans, and encouraging everyone to watch "Enterprise". Please tell your site visitors to attend the chat and watch the show! Let's show UPN the power of the fans on the Internet!
Like I'd actually have to tell you, right? But, you know what? I'm with him. Let's do it.
btw, if you are in the UK, that's 9pm, unless you are not still on "summer time" (cause we still are)
Questions can be emailed to bakulachat@startrek.com and the chat will be transcripted and posted sometime after Monday. thanks to Marc

Article -- quick synopsis
This is from the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER in an article called "Networks try to make some lagging shows sexier to viewers"

"Enterprise." 8 p.m. Wednesdays, KSTW/11. After a season of boldly losing almost 20 percent of its viewers, the series well on its way to becoming the "Star Trek" franchise scow clocked viewers with an attack from an alien race called the Xindi that decimated a hunk of Earth. Nice guy Capt. Archer (Scott Bakula) morphed into intergalactic Ahab.

So what happens now? A lot more action courtesy of Military Assault Command Operations (MACOs) going after the Xindi. More sex appeal. But executive producers Rick Berman and Brannon Braga had better make Archer toughen up himself and the crew, and very fast. Look for temporal trip-ups to play a major role.

Chat -- MORE CHATS WITH SCOTT!!!
I had to read this a couple of times, since I tend to skim..

woman jumping up and down!

Scott's Back!

Following one of our most successful chats ever, Scott returns to STARTREK.COM on Monday, September 22, to talk about that week's Enterprise episode, "Extinction." And, as an added bonus, Scott comes back again the following Wednesday, October 1, to talk about the new episode scheduled to air that night on UPN, "Rajiin."

Scott's participation in these special chats is a first for STARTREK.COM. As we covered general topics with Scott last time, our upcoming discussions will be focused mainly on the current episode. Mr. Bakula will reveal what he can about the upcoming show, but we're pretty sure he won't mind talking about the previous week's episode too. You can e-mail your questions about the new episode and the third season of Enterprise to: bakulachat@startrek.com

And now that I've figured it out, thanks to some nice soul on the Enterprise Project, I'll have directions and links this time (and that little reminder about popup blockers)

Comments -- Viewers Rate Enterprise
Or, to paraphrase an old Commercial:
ENTERPRISE -- Taste it again, for the first time
Recently found this site called Rate It All and was encouraged to comment on Enterprise. Looking back on the comments since then, this is one of my favorites.

If you haven't watched Enterprise since the first or second season, you're missing a FANTASTIC shift in direction! New aliens threaten Earth, the Temporal Cold War is back, and the crew finally have a defined mission--to prevent further destruction on Earth. Archer is a darker, tougher captain, Trip wants revenge for a personal loss, and T'Pol no longer answers to the Vulcan High Command. All the actors have matured in their roles, and the new story arc should provide great drama. GIVE THE SHOW ANOTHER LOOK--YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

Anomaly -- If you are on the west coast
and you are a Scott fan, keep an eye out in the dressing room scene. Even if you aren't into the plot, hey... there's something to be said for being shallow. Men get nice things to see... I think they may have been trying to give us a little equal time. The episode wasn't bad either. I'm thinking the pent up (or vented?) rage might go well with a side of "Captain, we should really talk about your frame of mind lately" just to make it more interesting. Off to watch it again and then try to sleep. Happy anomalies to all of you.

verbatim from TrekToday
Jonathan Frakes (William T. Riker) said recently he would have no qualms about returning to Star Trek to direct an episode of Enterprise.
"Absolutely, I would do it," Frakes told SyFy Portal's Michael Hinman. "I think that [Scott] Bakula is a wonderful captain, and that show has explored interesting new terrain. The schedule hasn't permitted [me to direct], but hopefully it will in the future."

Print -- TV Guide stuff
Next week's TV Guide is in. Their Returning Favorites issue. Two pages cover Enterprise: one a recap of Where We Left Off (I like that new approach) on page 67 and one in the Showdowns of 2003 section (page 84) where they cover whether Enterprise can survive the competition from Smallville.
What I've learned from this is--always read the captions. On the picture of Scott from last week's blue mine episode, the caption reads: "Did Scott Bakula have an accident with toilet bowl cleaner?" ..Somehow I think that arming the TidyBowl man isn't going to help.
While Matt Roush, in the returning section, likes the new approach, in the Showdowns section, he says "If there's a Superman cult overlap, this struggling Star Trek prequel could be in real trouble."
I'd recommend sending some TidyBowl to Matt, but honestly, positive letters to Dawn at UPN and Les at parent CBS and whoever it is at Viacom would be a more productive use of our energies.
To those who feel their arms are being twisted, my apologies for my recent Tidal Wave of "get out there and get involved" speeches (I may be getting just as boring as Buffy last year) but I've spent 7.5 of my 9.5 years of Scott fandom without him having a series on TV and it just really matters to me. In case you feel I'm implying disloyalty if you don't get involved--don't. But I'm not over-reacting when I note that Scott has to say "I'm not kidding" to get us to hopefully realize that things are serious. Lastly, it's not impossible for fans of a show to make a difference. If it were, you'd likely not be watching Enterprise next Wednesday night. And my thanks to everyone who realized it was urgent, back when I did not. I am currently overcompensating. But hey, wouldn't it be nice to hear them announce on "UPN, Okay! The show is coming back in next fall! PLEASE stop writing to us!"? It actually happened on NBC way back when.
As for the TV Guide issue, there are no quotes from Scott and the pictures are ones you have already seen.

Looks like Enterprise is going to try to "say something" as well as revisiting other tried and true concepts like

..For those who wondered why Trek would revisit the "parallel Earth" concept, Goodman said, "I tried to use an old concept to say something new, or at least relevant."

at the end of the chat yesterday, Scott said this:

Goodbye, Joel and everybody watch tonight, and tell everyone else, people on the street, the network is counting on word of mouth! And I'm not kidding, so it's up to everybody out there!

I didn't realize it at the time, but the more I looked at it, the more I saw, he's saying what we have been saying and he has to even say "I'm not kidding", 'cause the last time he said something similar, I thought he was just being ever cautious. He's not kidding.
Even if you can't think of anything to write Paramount/UPN about, we have some ideas for you, and I'll be getting to those later today, so check back, okay?

"Star Scott Bakula says that if they have to blow something up, then they will just blow it up" -- Mary Hart, ET

It's late, got home at 12:30, been out all night at the studio and the neighbors' evangelizing the premiere and handing out cards (10 wasn't enough, drat!). I still have email to trige before I can sleep. (I didn't sleep last night till 7 am, I just saw Scott's interview while showing it to the neighbors) I'll try to add to this as I go thru it. Bear with me.

Enterprise Gets New Name
UPN has finally put Star Trek in front of Enterprise in the series' title.
While StarTrek.com is still calling the show Enterprise, UPN has changed its logos on both the main and series pages of its web site to reflect the change.
TrekWeb
reported that the network also sent a memo to its affiliates, signed by Kathie Kiefner, manager of communications and operations for CBS and UPN affiliate relations.
The memo announces a revision to the name, asking stations to note "the following new title for the 2003/2004 season: STAR TREK ENTERPRISE."
The name appears as Star Trek Enterprise, without the colon used by the network to refer to Star Trek: Voyager.
the above text and more can be found at TrekToday

No Time Yet for Chat
(ignore this, unless you want to see how things work at Paramount, Anita just found it) Scott's chat today, Wednesday, at the official site still says Time to be determined. Apologies to anyone who actually wanted to take time off/get home early, I know why they don't know, but they still don't. They were, however, kind enough to send a non-automated reply.

We appreciate your enthusiasm, and hope you and your folks will be able to attend the chat. As of this moment, we still do not know the time of the chat. We are at the mercy of the production of the show, and have to wait until Scott gets his schedule for tomorrow. You can bet that as soon as we know, we'll post it on the site!

Bottom line, I'm not going to get much sleep till sometime after midnight tomorrow..

Hollywood Reporter Ad
Despite some last minute glitches the Ad will be in the Wednesday issue. If you can't find it where you live, there is an address around here where you can send $6.95 for a copy. As the address is Back Issues it's not time-sensitive and I will give it a bump sometime on Thursday. If you live in an area where you can buy it on the stands, then it's today's issue. Congratulations to all the members of and donors to The Enterprise Project for all their hard work to save our show, and please visit their website for extremely helpful advice on what to do now

ET's take on the New Season

Enterprise - Wednesday 8:00 p.m.

Since the two-year old "Star Trek" series has deteriorated both creatively and ratings-wise, "Enterprise" promises to be more action-packed, action-oriented and faster-paced next season. The show will focus on a brand new race of aliens called the Xindi, who are comprised of five different and distinct species. Instead of another season of exploring space peacefully, the goal in 2003-04 is for a more specific, very immediate and very dangerous situation. Trekkies - take note. The voyage is far from over.

from ET's Insider Look at the New Season (verbatim)

Watch Tonight!!
With the season Premiere tonight and Paramount's still not up to par publicity "campaign," The Enterprise Project strongly suggests that we watch the show tonight please, don't wait for the weekly rerun, and contact Paramount, UPN, your local affiliate, the sponsors, (and anyone else you can think of) by snail mail, phone, carrier pigeon or blimp (those last two were mine and I take complete responsibility for them) to let them know that you watched it and will continue to do so.
Again, please check out their website for those addresses, phone numbers, and hints to help if you have writers' block

a note from MJ of the Project:

Dominic Keating indicated at Vulkon [(convention in.. Cleveland?) this past weekend] that requests made to UPN for more advertising for ENT appeared to have been rejected by upper management?

So, how does that translate? Simple -- we ARE the publicity for ENT. UPN isn't just being negligent about advertising -- the top brass KNOWS they're not doing it. And they don't seem to see why they should.

This is not a PR department problem, it DOES come from the top down. We want UPN to do more? The buck's stopped at Dawn Ostroff's door already. Contact HER.

And spread the word everyplace you can to watch the show until UPN catches on...

That's it. I'm going to finish my mail. it's now 2:52am and I haven't finished: email, message boards, ..last 2 eps of Season 2...

Missed Good Day Live?

I'll be checking in throughout the day in case there is more

Here's that quote from the MACO
Rose called working with Scott Bakula a highlight of her experience on the show, for she had watched Quantum Leap and considered him "the dad on set" of Enterprise.
"He's the dad on set," she said. "He talks to the cameraman, the actors, the make-up people, to make sure everyone is happy."

Publicity -- EW Review Text
For those of us who don't have AOL or EW
Enterprise is listed in their returning shows section, along with this, in the "what to watch" section
"ENTERPRISE (UPN, TV-PG-LV) UPN promised much more action on Enterprise this year, and more action is what we shall receive! (And I'm not just talking about a half-naked T'Pol imploring "harder, harder," although I certainly could talk more about that if you like.) The third season premiere finds Archer (Scott Bakula) and (more specifically, the Xindi) who scorched parts of planet Earth. As if worrying about locating these mysterious bastards (sorry, Xindi) and possibly becoming anatomically inverted aren't bad enough, they must also deal with a sketchy alien trader looking to turn our heros into slave labor. Which makes him a bastard, too. " B

Scifi Weekly also has an older interview with Scott which I have not yet determined if I have read before although I'm guessing no; I think I would have caught the repeated misspelling of Brannon Braga's first name. So, go.. read. That's what I am about to do

Fan Activism -- How about some Wallpaper?
If you have access to your computer desktop at work and it doesn't violate your company's policies, consider promoting Enterprise on your desktop.
TrekWeb has some season premiere wallpaper you can use for this, or make your own, or submit something to them to share.
Let's raise some awareness out there if we can!

Publicity -- UPN plans some
or at least that's what they say..
from the Hollywood Report 2003/4 TV Season edition from Dawn Ostroff, President of UPN Entertainment

"The hope is that the Tuesday comedies will, in turn, funnel a few much-needed young men into Wednesdays 'Enterprise' and 'Jake 2.0', a companion piece aimed squarely at the video-game geek demo. All shows are set to receive much more promotion during the Networks top rated 'WWE Smackdown' because UPN for the first time controls advertising inventory during the two hour block under a modified deal with the WWE."

Press -- USA Today
The September 3 print edition of USA today had a large picture of Scott in the TV Section
Also, their online edition has this text:

Enterprise

UPN, Wednesdays, 8 p.m. ET/PT

Stop me if you've heard this one before: This is the year the Star Trek folks turn their fading franchise around.

Enterprise was supposed to be the show that brought the story back to life after the terminally listless Voyager. Instead, the crew in this Trek prequel has spent two seasons aimlessly wandering, chasing away much of their audience.

The ship is getting some new crew members and a new purpose: to hunt down an alien race that's planning to destroy Earth. (The season finale repeats tonight.) They may not be going boldly, but at least they're finally going somewhere.

Personal Stuff
I'm slogging my way back thru season 2. It was good up until Vanishing Point (someone give Hoshi a good ep, please?) and then what's next? Precious Cargo? Oh wait, it does have that scene where T'Pol asks if the evil aliens have any post-mortem rituals in their culture.. so maybe it won't be so bad. Otherwise I'll have to wait for Stigma for things to get good again...(wait, the Catwalk was okay-even had a little tension, of the non-sexual kind) and then they will stay good for a good while. Yay. Now if we could just improve on this... :-)
Because, really, I channel surfed through Jag tonight, and if Scott doesn't get a 100th episode out of *this* series, I'm going to be even more jealous that I already was.
Yes, I *have* been reading blogs. Sorry. I'll behave now.

Fan Support requested to keep Enterprise
I'm not the kind to run around screaming the house is on fire, I don't believe the SPAM and hoaxes I get in my email every day. Maybe I'm getting to be a cynic.. or at least a skeptic... But when you make me believe that something will happen if I don't act, the activist who just doesn't live in me (I really object to telling other people what to do) peeks out and yells, "We have to do something."

It's time

MJ of the Enterprise Project has said it's okay to share her email to us from this morning/last night/whenever and after that I have some other comments from her, that I can also share.
====
Let's be blunt, folks.

There are ENT fans waiting with bated breath for September 10 because it kicks off the new season of ENT, Season Three. That's what we're all about, right?

NOPE.

September 10, 2003 is the beginning of the countdown to Season Four.
Everything that is happening on that set now, and all points forward this season, lead to whether there is or isn't a Season Four. Everything WE do right now is geared at one thing: MAKING SURE THAT THERE IS A SEASON FOUR.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT begins after 9 pm Eastern Standard Time (US), September 10, 2003, and goes on to the Smallville premiere (October 1)
Write, call, email, or fax UPN. Tell them that you were there for the season premiere. Whatever you thought, love it or hate it, let them know you watched it. Wednesday night.

Get friends to do the same thing, have an ENT-watching party and have everyone there sign a note that they were
watching. Let UPN know the fans are out there. Screw the ratings (which might even be good), give UPN tangible evidence of an audience.

Do the same thing for ParamountStudio Group, which oversees B&B. Let them know that there was an audience, so the people on top of the Trek franchise know that we're there.

PART TWO -- DO THE SAME THING immediately after the premiere of Smallville.

We have no clue how Smallville will impact ENT's ratings, but whether there's a real drop or not, let UPN and PSG know that there are fans who WERE NOT BUDGED from ENT by Smallville's premiere. Let them know that ENT is for real time, Smallville's for VCR (if you even follow it). Let them know that the core audience isn't budging for the Boy Of Steel and Bald Guy.

In fact, if you don't throw an ENT premiere party, have one the night that Smallville premieres, have a few friends over. Keep as many people out of Smallville as you like. Let UPN know that your crowd didn't desert ENT for that other genre show.

So none of you are Nielsen people, and neither are your friends? Big deal. We know that the Nielsens don't give an adequate picture of genre viewership.
Use your pens and your phones to help UPN get the REAL scoop on people watching the show on those dates.

MJ

Pam notes here having an intense reaction to Lin's post about her co-workers who didn't know Enterprise was on or that Scott was in it, and Linda's conversation with the Houston Affil. that Paramount or UPN won't bother to promote the show since the Fans will do it for them. Not to mention Scott's comment that people are asking him, "What are you doing these days?"

The Ent Project members -- and anyone else who wants to -- are also starting a campaign of writing to magazines, newspapers, anyone who can write articles about the show to increase awareness of it before it airs. Here is my corrollary to their slogan -- The Enterprise Project: Cause everyone's name isn't Neilsen

Write to the media: 'Cause Nobody watches UPN
(if that stinks, it's because I just made it up. The directive remains. No one will see promos on a channel they don't watch. And UPN doesn't seem to care all that much.)

MJ's reply to my request to pass this on
-----
Heck, send it around all you want, whatever format you want. Please. Post everywhere. If anyone wants to know the original cancellation saga, we'll be happy to tell them --

My assistant listmod PJ, who runs a Trek fan site on Yahoo for the Malcolm Reed and Hoshi Sato characters, had spoken to UPN immediately after seeing a MSN official site on the new season that said UPN was "undecided" (in April, four months after Dawn Ostroff had said there was no doubt about Season Three) and UPN admitted to her that they hadn't re-signed the
show and that the entire matter was still under discussion.
The 50 people on our list at the time and their friends on a couple of ENT fanfic lists began a UPN / Paramount Studio Group bombardment, since UPN was supposedly to announce the new schedule the following week.

People act like the Hollywood Reporter ad is the first thing we did?
Hell, we had press releases on every one of the major sites -- TrekToday, TrekWeb, TrekPulse, everywhere, announcing ourselves and trying to enlist people to heed the Season Three warning we'd gotten from UPN.

Forty-eight hours later, after UPN's phone lines were bogged down for the day and Paramount was answering its phones  "is this about the ENT renewal?"  UPN announced it needed more time to make its announcement on the fall season.
We kept at it... and finally, all of a last-minute sudden, they announced that the new, retooled Season Three was in fact ON.
----
I do have to ask, why was it we didn't know Scott was on Kilborn till 3 hours before it aired? Was it cause it would have been a waste of time to promote a show that wouldn't be airing the next year?
Scott said he found out about the pickup when Jay called him from New York. I swear I believed he was just being his usual, "We can never be sure of anything" self.

I almost feel as if it's telling tales out of school to repeat this stuff. But this is what it took for me to see it was serious. Hand me an official memo. I know how people over-react, so give me proof this is serious. I'm not calling the fire station till you convince me the house is on fire. Star Trek hasn't been cancelled since 1969...

The "make-or-break year for UPN" article as to UPN got to me. The confluence of comments someone attributed to Domenic (re: late pick-up) and Scott's comments on TV got to me.

Are you a loyal Scott fan? This is something you can actually do.

In light of the recent resurrection of the footage from Extra, I've been wandering around and just found some old footage from ET. It's only 1:30 minutes -- Scott on the bridge with Mark Steines -- and I honestly can't remember how much of it aired, since it was two years ago. There's also a transcript of something completely different (but probably from the csame package), on the same page. It's all old stuff, but at this point I can't remember what I haven't seen. (I think I was on overload back then). Note to Paramount/UPN: I'd be perfectly happy to be drowning again right now.

4 out of 5 people surveyed...
don't know Enterprise exists.
No one watches UPN. Longtime Trek fans apparently aren't even aware of the show.
This can't be good.
Perhaps the latest round of Article (yes that was singular, it was only one Article as far as I know) will help. Perhaps it won't. Perhaps putting Scott on your screensaver at work would help. How should I know, I never studied PR. All I know is this show needs some.
Trek fans have a reputation. Some of it is deserved. But not all Trek fans are worrying about whether the phaser is off by two microns... some are actually worrying about character development, improvement of human nature, social issues, deep thoughts and hopefully good writing.
And some of us just like to see Scott Bakula naked.
Okay, I admit it--that was a ploy to see if lightning can strike twice.
Personally, Scott can wear anything that isn't that incredibly boring uniform he's currently wearing. (except a dress. PLEASE.)
I'm sure if the writers try hard enough (or hire Deborah Pratt) they could manage to pry Scott's shirt off a bit this season. But I'd rather they pry his backstory out of whatever hole they've buried it in. I do believe Mayweather was promised a tale of the time Archer almost signed up for a tour on a cargo ship...
In the meantime, for those of us who aren't Scifi fans, it's probably still time for some of those aforementioned deep thoughts. Trek wasn't great for its technobabble, it was great for its relationships (and I don't mean the romantic kind) and for believing the world could be a better place.
I can't say the show is going to be better this year due to its "new mission." I do hope Archer becomes a great hero who saves the Earth (and figures out who he is, and lets us in on it in the process) and eventually becomes a great diplomat (who is somehow never mentioned by future generations of Starfleet).
All I can say is I've heard more than once of recent that it wasn't till the last minute that UPN "picked up" Enterprise this season. So we don't have a lot of laurels to be resting on. If you like the show, tell someone. Tell everyone. And tell them why. And maybe tell them what someone wrote to me this morning -- Enterprise is the most "human" of all Trek series. You don't have to be a geek to like it. All you have to do is find UPN on your dials (or remotes).
Wednesdays at 8pm (barring sports) starting September 10.

Quotes -- from Enterprise Article
Something tells me this is the article Joanne got this morning in her paper--no mention of Scott. But the article from the Canadian Press has two Scott quotes:

Scott Bakula, who plays Capt. Jonathan Archer, says the new season is "less about protocol, more about the job to do." Besides commanding the Enterprise crew, Archer now supervises a tough onboard military team.
The "ante is up" on the action this season, Bakula says. "A great shot of adrenaline" has been pumped in, along with "crazy fun."

That was them. For the rest of the behind the scenes stuff, if you are interested, you can read this article at Canada.com

Online -- BakulaGames Presents Bakology
Missed parts of Scott's career? Regret not being a packrat?
Fret no more!
In the ongoing Scott fan tradition of those of us who have "been there" sharing with those who come after us:
Helene and Layla have done it!
And here is a copy of their 'Press Release'

It's been a difficult summer. No Scott project to see him in. No new Scott material on the horizon. All we had going for us was the prospect of 'Enterprise' beginning another season and that's not until September. So we spent our time 'revisiting' older Scott material and realized, 'hey, wouldn't it be great if everyone could be doing what we're doing?!'

So, what began as a Scott diversion blossomed into a website, one where we could offer whatever Scott material we had (whether print related, audio or video) for everyone to see/hear. We've tried to arrange the items in chronological order and tried to include whatever we had on hand and had permission to share. Unfortunately, it would be impossible to keep all of this stuff available all the time, so we plan to swap out items each week.

We now have up Scott's 'amateur' years (1967-1976) for you to take a look/listen. We realize that to many of you, this stuff is 'old hat' while to some of you it is brand new. Either way, whether you're simply revisiting or seeing/hearing Scott for the first time, we hope you enjoy your tour through Scott's career.

Note: Feel free to enjoy all of things posted but we would appreciate it if none of them were reposted to other websites. Links to the site, however, are always welcome them. If you have any questions about these items or if you have any suggestions, please feel free to email either of us.

We hope you enjoy 'watching'/'listening' to Scott grow up before your eyes!

Pam notes: Yippee!! For those of you who haven't had a chance to spend a weekend with Helene and her tape collection.. this is "the next best thing to being there"
Kudos to Helene and Layla for the hours and hours (and hours) of work they put in getting this site up and running to share with all of us.

We're at $2991.47, or about $2878.00 less Paypal.
That puts us over the top in donations and two dollars short of total of $2880 after deductions -- and I understand there are still a few checks I am waiting on.
Ladies and gentlemen -- give yourselves a very big hand; we've done it.
The ad [will be] full page Sept. 10, season premiere, as planned.
Our graphics gal and our Hollywood Reporter contact are hard at work making sure we have a beautiful ad and a great spot in the September 10 issue.

As previously noted: Personal webspace and a domain name were donated by Project members. No money from the donations was used. (Don't you just love people who really care about doing what they say they are going to?)

Quote -- oops!
Found another quote not mentioned elsewhere. Sounds familiar to all of us who have heard--from friends, family and co-workers--the dreaded words: "Scott Who?"
from Ohio.com
Bakula has tried to convince viewers that, since Enterprise is a prequel, they can jump right into the series without having watched all the other Treks. But its ratings don't even make the top 100 for a season. Bakula fears that many people haven't even noticed Enterprise.
"When I bump into people on the street and they say, 'What are you up to?' we're not doing a good job." Bakula said.

One more quote from the panel which I haven't seen already:
from the Chicago Sun-Times
"We're all trying, you know," Bakula said. "There's nobody over here laying down just saying, 'Let's roll out another "Enterprise" season and go to the bank.' It's not about that. We're very vested in the show."

Quote -- from the Press Tour Panel
One more quote from the panel which I haven't seen already:
from the Chicago Sun-Times
"We're all trying, you know," Bakula said. "There's nobody over here laying down just saying, 'Let's roll out another "Enterprise" season and go to the bank.' It's not about that. We're very vested in the show."

Interview -- Scott quotes from Press Tour
from StarTrek.com:
Bakula addressed his views on the show's creative needs. "Somewhere probably in the middle of last season, I started to feel that the storylines that we'd introduced in the first year-and-a-half — the Suliban, this Temporal Cold War — there were elements that we kind of left dangling. And for me, as an actor, I felt like we needed to address these things in a more earnest fashion or move on." It was during a conversation with Berman and Braga around February that he learned of the new story plans. "It seemed to me that this has followed a natural progression with this franchise, but it didn't come out of, 'Oh my God, we've got to change the show, there's something wrong with the show.' It came out of, 'Where do we want to go, where have we gotten ourselves into, and how can we move the show forward in an exciting and compelling and dramatic way?'"
Scott also spoke about new directions for his character, particularly in light of the events that took place in the last few episodes of last season. "There's a drive underneath him... There's a certain darkness to him now that's a little bit tunnelvision — which is, you know, 'Whatever it takes,'" he said. "But the idea of being the peaceful, 'we-come-in-friendship-from-Earth' [type of captain] — that guy is gone. And it's not that a warrior has replaced him, but [someone more] determined and motivated, because there's so much at stake for his character and for Earth." He further revealed, "Some of the things I've done in the first three episodes [of Season 3] have shocked the other people on the ship, and I think that's all good."
Asked if she's going to be "a little less Vulcan," Blalock replied, "Not necessarily less Vulcan ... you're still going to get that logic — Scott likes to call it 'sucking the air out of the room.'"
And yes, Archer's dog is staying on Enterprise through the whole Delphic Expanse experience. "Porthos wouldn't stay at home, so, yes, Porthos is with us," Bakula said.
Feeling happier now! (and not cause of Porthos!) More details at StarTrek.com

from Sci-Fi.com :
Says Scott Bakula: "What you see are guys that have spent the entire hiatus trying to position the show and new scripts and new ideas, and they're rethinking everything," Scott said in an interview at UPN's fall press preview. "I'm saying to them every day, 'Think out of the box.' [Go, Scott!!]... And they're saying, 'Let's do this.' And everybody is doing that. They spent all of their energy creating this new place. And now they're peopling it. And we're discovering it."
Archer will get a little darker, a bit more driven in his mission to stop the Xindi. "The idea of being the peaceful 'We-come-in-friendship' [guy], ... that guy is gone," Bakula said.

TV -- Enterprise Season 3 Premiere Date
Apparently we are lucky enough to get an early premiere this year. According to TrekToday and Zap2It, Enterprise's season three premiere will be September 10! (okay, there are a few good reasons for summer to end!) preceded by several weeks of double episodes.
Also if you were concerned your local UPN affil might become.. something else (?) there is yet hope.
Also, the Television Critics Association Press Tour had a panel with Rick Berman and Brannon Braga, Scott, Jolene Blalock and Connor Trinneer. So far, no quotes from Scott.. but if you are interested in TVGuide's opinions, you cah check them out at their website (at least for today)
If reading any of this coverage makes you depressed.. you might want to take a trip over to The Enterprise Project and consider showing Enterprise some support (although honestly, whatever TV Guide's reporter thinks of anyone's frame of mind is purely subjective. (Maybe they just read the cover of next week's TV Guide. I know that wouldn't make *me* all jumping for joy happy to be interviewed. Memo to TV Guide--If you can't say something nice...))
On a happier note,
The previously mentioned issue 145 of Star Trek Communicator (you can't miss it, the cover is nothing but Scott) is on stands as of a couple of weeks ago, and Scott, when interviewed, sounded pretty upbeat about everything, including not being the magazine publishing industry's "flavor of the month."
For a more well rounded view on the whole thing (well not more well-rounded than Scott's) there's a bit of debate (whoops, "exchange of ideas") going on over at the SBFF.. Personally, I think all positive gestures are good things.
and my alarm just went off.. for the third time
Let me repeat that good news: Scott starts saving the world September 10, in our living rooms.

Print/Interview -- Star Trek Communicator
After two and a half weeks of searching, I have found Star Trek Communicator (issue #145) on the stands. It's not hard to see -- The cover is a full picture of Scott. I got mine at Borders. Others have been spotted at Super Walmarts.
If you have to buy one magazine this summer, buy this one! 4 stars for the interview with Scott--including "a typical day in the life of Scott." There are also pictures. No candids, mostly shots from last season's eps and one from the MetroSource(?) photo shoot, which you may already have
There's also some good info about Scott from Keith Carradine, and info on the upcoming season of Enterprise, interviews with Rick and Brannon...
Excerpts of Rick Berman's interview can be found at SciFi Pulse
If you are outside the US and cannot get the zine, I'm sure scans will be showing up eventually if not already. But really -- encourage these people to interview Scott more often -- buy their magazine! (and call your local bookstore in advance to avoid a wasted trip--I made 4 of them! Yesterday, Borders called *me.*)
thanks to everyone on the SBFF for letting all of us know about the zine and where to check for it, and to TrekToday.com for finding excerpts, for which I don't have time to make the links as I am now really late for work.

and Gail found some more at the Disney message board. Scott is in many of the pics from #260-279. Sometimes it's just little bits of him. She's especially fond of #271, Scott in the distance standing by the media tent. In another pic, Scott is holding a microphone.
thanks to Gail
and if you should feel the need to drool over the pix, don't miss this thread over at the SBFF (whence came these other "finds")

Print -- more on Star Trek Communicator 145
According to Linda, posting on the SBFF issue 145 (the one with Scott on the cover) contains some level of 'A day in the life of Scott...' Apparently the Bakula household has gotten a new puppy...
So if it's hit the newstands yet, I'll be there tomorrow (the newsstand, not the Bakula Household, obviously -- plus I'm allergic to puppies.. though it does occur to me to wonder if it's a beagle)
and yes, I'm still working on those other pics from Disneyland.
thanks to Linda for the added motivation!

WireImage.com has one picture from the Pirates Premiere yesterday, and yes, you can kinda tell Enterprise is "in session" -- Scott has gotten a haircut... My vote is for whoever is the "barber" on Enterprise to be "anatomically intverted" first. (it's not a *bad* haircut... it's just a haircut..)

Production News -- Enterprise Gets Back to Work
According to an article at the official site, shooting for Season 3 of Enterprise did begin today (er, okay yesterday -- it's nearly 2am (eek!))
Scott isn't mentioned in the article, and last year when they said the "cast" had come back from hiatus, it did turn out to be pretty much only Jolene, but I'm not really seeing anything that implies Scott *wasn't* there (just gun-shy from last year, when we thought he got back a week earlier than he actually did, maybe?)
You can find more details at the official site.

Also, according to a recent article at TrekToday (and *their* sources), the season premiere *may* be as early as the week of September 24.

Fan Activism -- The Enterprise Project
For those of us who can't get enough of Scott on any series, and have heard the ratings for "Enterprise," there's a group working on keeping the network and sponsors aware of fan interest in Scott's current show.

The ENTERPRISE Project logs and contacts sponsors, and writes notes to Paramount and UPN; not to "save" the show -- which has been renewed for a third season -- but to let them know that, despite ratings slumps, the show is being watched and has loyal fans.

If you wish to participate, or just get more information on ENTERPRISE Project, Check out their website.
They also have a Yahoo group that you can join, if you'd like. You'll find a link to that at their website as well.

Gee.. I got slashdotted!!
As you might have noticed, BakulaNews experienced massive bandwidth useage overnight and is down for the moment, but updates to news will be made here, until I can find another idea. Stay tuned. I promise to at least put the news back up. (New visitors and Scott fans -- we want you to hang around! The site's been up since Dec 1995, so please give me a day to get things back together :-) )

and today was not that day... maybe tomorrow...

in the meantime you can email me at pam@bakulanews.com let me know if anyone is still here, now that here is.. well... temporarily elsewhere.

and apparently, the term for this phenomenon is being "slashdotted" -- a major website mentions you.. and everyone visits, and you go over quota...

thanks for your patience
