Interview -- Scott's comments on UPN News NYC
May 22, after Enterprise, the NYC UPN affiliate ran a little bit
with Scott talking about (mostly) 2 Days and 2 Nights
Here are all of Scott's words
Scott: There's been some argument, with the Vulcans etc.
that we're not ready to be out there
Pat Collins: Here's how, and why, they kept the producers kept Scott out of the
bedroom (in Two Days and Two Nights):
Scott: The word came down early, that I was going to have
a sexual relationship, on Risa... and, you know, we'd talked from the beginning
that I was going to be a little bit more like Kirk, you know, and a "girl
on every planet" kind of thing. And as we'd gotten there, it didn't quite
feel right. They're being careful with me in that sense. There's just a
different sense of responsibility that comes with my Captaincy. (Aparently
the Powers That Be read Evay's memorandum, Let
Archer Be Archer :-) )
Scott looked pleasantly messy (what you could see of him) and was shown
only from the shoulders up, only sometimes during this brief comment,
interspersed with clips from 2D&2N.

TV -- More Scott or not?
I've been checking out Barbara's
Scott TV for the week listing, and apparently E! is running more of those
Rank shows. So we don't know if Scott will be in them. It might be a good idea
to check them out.
So far, the Rank:Sitcoms is

Parody -- 5 Minute Enterprise Resumes
Nope, it's not Scott... it's not even actually Archer, but for those of you who
have been wondering about the 5 Minute Enterprise parodies by
Colin 'Zeke' Hayman over at TrekToday...
they're back. And Colin has promised a new one everyday (okay every other day?)
till he gets to the end of the season.

Interview -- Scott in TV Guide Online
If you want to save the minor spoilers for
later, here's the Scott quotage (yes, I've been watching Buffy again) minus the
plot points (minimal as they are)
Scott on the Theme Song:
"It's not my call. Nobody [here] asked what I thought
of it. I think it works for this Trek incarnation. In the past, it was always
theme music and never lyrics. Rick Berman wanted to say, 'This isn't the Star
Trek of old' and this is one of the ways they chose to do it."
Scott on Techo-babble:
"Not only do you have to spit it out, they're
sticklers about you doing it verbatim. In this season finale, I think I modify
our phaser cannons and turn them into something else and it's a page of
techno-babble in the script. It's quantum physics combined with engineering
technology, and I'm just spewing it. They saved the worst for last for me this
year!"
Scott on "too many back-to-back episodes."
"This whole notion of how they program at UPN is bizarre to me... I'd like
us to not be on TV as often. I'm excited about The Twilight Zone coming up after
us this fall. It's a great combination."
Scott on his fans admiring his body:
"That's very nice. I've always stayed in shape, for
myself and this business. I run, work out and play sports and I have four
kids, so I've got to keep up with all of them at the beach and snowboarding in
the mountains. So I'm keeping up for everybody!"
The entire transcript (and byline) can be found here.
(there's at least one more Scott quote.)

Pam's Off Topic -- Ally McBeal
My brother runs a weblog. He gets to editorialize. I don't. But I will for a
second. I love television (I was a bookworm as a child). I get online and talk
about television. I join newsgroups and mailing lists when a show grabs me. It's
been a year or so now since my beloved Ally mailing list died (I think the
listowners all graduated) and that pretty much leaves me no one to share The End
of An Era. My (truly) favorite show is gone now. It didn't end as I would have
wished... my brother is
ticked off (and that's surprising) and I'm slightly placated by the ending
song and voiceover. My all-time favorite TV character, the one I could most
relate to, is gone now, and they couldn't even spare an extra hour for the
finale.
Enterprise had better be good next season--on an emotionally satisfying
level of good. I'm counting on it.
Interviews -- Something old
If you are a new Scott fan, or were not online in 99/2000 (and you live in the
US or Canada), I have an interview you might be interested in. Email
me for details.
It's kind of my penance for all the editorializing of late, and partly that we
do have a new crop of fans....
Music -- A reminder
For those who have not bought or perhaps not even heard of Scott's recordings of
the musicals Romance Romance, 3 Guys Naked from the Waist Down, Anyone Can
Whistle, and the Quantum Leap Soundtrack, please check out the Where
to Buy page. Sometimes these things bear repeating. If you are a "fan
in the making," these CD's will finish the job for you :-)

TV News -- UPN announces Fall Schedule
In an article titled UPN, The Fastest Growing Network in Young Demos,
Announces Two New Dramas And One New Comedy for Its 2002-2003 Prime-Time
Schedule PR
Newswire reports:
UPN's 2002-2003 prime-time schedule will capitalize on the momentum of last
season ...will use its key anchor series to do what few other
networks can -- launch all three of its new shows in protected time periods
behind well-established series [Buffy, Enterprise and Girlfriends].
...Coming off of its best full season ever in 18-to-34 year olds ...UPN
[is] the fastest-growing network among 12-to-34 year olds, 18-to-34 year olds
and 18-to-49 year olds [of course, if you are UPN there's nowhere to go but up,
but still, good demographics are good demographics]
for more demographics and details of the new shows, see the article
Print -- Scott in Canadian TV Guide
Canada's TV Guide this
week has Scott on the cover and apparently there is also a section called
"Celebrity Chefs" that features Scott this week (apparently he's into
fajitas in the backyard). Next week, there will
be an article debating
how Enterprise's Captain Archer stacks up against James T. Kirk and
Jean-Luc Picard -- No wait, maybe that's the same issue: Issue
of Saturday, May 18 to Friday, May 24, 2002
Also, their website has a review
of Scott's career to date. Of course, it's stuff we already know, but if
you're new here, go check it out. Please note the date for Murphy Brown is wrong
-- they probably listed the start date of the series itself. Scott was on
starting in fall 1993 and did 13
episodes over 3 seasons according to Ailsa's site (and my memory isn't as
bad as I thought!).

Sources -- Where does News come from?
I've been asked by a few people who must think I'm superhuman or something. While it
takes time to gather and format and filter and edit the site -- and trust me,
that's enough time right there -- there is a great network of fans who are even
more motivated than I am in "the search for Scott." They do searches,
keep up with other sources, subscribe to things that actually cost money, and
transcribe their little hearts out. And, in case anyone wasn't clear on this
part, they don't do it for me--they do it for all of us. I just try to winnow.
The two main sources I'm checking (several times a day) currently, are Trek
Today (who themselves scour about 100 Trek-related sites per day) and Trudy's
Scott Bakula Fan Forum (the latest gathering spot for Scottaholics). Trudy's
board has been BUSY--so finding news amidst the pictures, discussion, and yes,
drooling, is... time consuming, but fun. With Trek Today, it's a matter of
sifting out Scott from the rest (love their color scheme! really helpful!) And
yes, sometimes people will email me directly with news, too (like for the
Hamilton Benefit).
Obviously if someone is not giving me a source, I'll attempt to verify, but most
people, posts and articles source their info really well. And some rumors turn
out to be true (Scott? on Star Trek? you're kidding me, right?)
Overall, it's just an awful lot of devoted fans working together. And I'm just
trying to get it into a format where you can get thru it fast if you're in a
hurry (and trying to keep track of a million broken links). I'm not alone --
there's a whole network of "us" out there. And
all of us are just overjoyed that Scott finally "made it big," before
we got too old to care ;-) (though that could be a while -- the oldest Scott fan I
know is in her late 70's)
Having said that... if anyone knows when the Archer dolls will be in stores, or what the URL is to buy them online--please email me. Someone asked me the other day, and the info must have slipped through my fingers last time I heard it.

Pre-Editorial -- Season Finale
Let's Not Even Wait,
Let's Scream Now
Yup, my throat is already sore from the sound that came out of it a few minutes
ago, when my brother, who
happened to be just bored enough to visit Star
Trek's official website, came across the lovely news that
Enterprise's season finale will be... you guessed it -- a cliffhanger.
NOOOOOooooooooo... We'll come back in the fall. We promise! But please, just
don't torture us... Haven't we been good fans all season? Even when the episodes
were really boring? Okay, so I'm the last to find this out. Shoot
me. Better yet, shoot whoever came up with this idea in the first place. I had a
really uneasy feeling the other day when reading that The Best of Both World's,
apparently Star Trek's very first season-ender cliff-hanger caused The Next
Generation (TNG) to be the biggest hit... Okay, if you can make Enterprise take
off as well as TBOBW did for TNG, maybe I'll forgive you.
CDs -- Enterprise Soundtrack Release
This Tuesday Universal Music will release the official Enterprise Soundtrack
album, containing the series' main theme (both versions) and original episode
music, including ... 'Archer's Theme' (okay I'm intrigued). Also included, an
enhanced CD portion playable on most PCs, including profiles of the cast
and crew, web links, and a video of Watson performing 'Faith of the Heart.

Print -- New TV Guide Issues
from Joanne who figured out what TV Guide is doing...
TV Guide has printed a regular magazine-sized tribute issue devoted entirely to
Star Trek in all its incarnations. There are at least 2 different covers, each
showing 3 ST characters on a striking silver-holographic background. [One of
them] has ARCHER with Kirk and Picard.
There are articles on each series, and on individual characters. They.. pick the
best episodes of each series. For Enterprise so far they picked Broken Bow,
Shuttlepod One, and Dear Doctor.
[Also there is] a fantastic picture of Capt. Archer on p. 12, and they also give
best episodes by Captain--the best "Archer" episodes are Broken
Bow, Shadows of P'Jem, and Rogue Planet.
The cover says the magazine can be displayed until July 22, 2002, but given what
happened with the weekly TV Guide, I wouldn't gamble they'll be around that
long!

Off Topic -- Ally McBeal ends
Thanks to Rick Berman and Brannon Braga for giving Scott a show so I could have
a favorite show as my (actually) favorite show announced
today that it was ending. David E. Kelley had told us long ago that he only
planned the show to go for five years. Ally filled most of the gap between Mr.
& Mrs. Smith and Enterprise for me. Once and Again also ended, running its
finale this past Monday
thanks to Philip and TK and now back to Scott
My Pictures -- Looking for a home
I got my pictures from the Reception yesterday and am currently looking for a
place online to store them so you can see even more pictures of Scott from
this weekend. I only shot one roll as I was playing with my brother's
videocam and generally walking around etc.
I shall get them online as soon as I can. Obviously, the picture of me and Scott
(when will I learn not to tilt my head?) will be up sooner. Maybe tonight. And
of course, lots of reports and pix can be found at Trudy's
message board.
Stay tuned.

Movie News -- Role of a Lifetime (aka Ghost

Over the weekend we heard that the movie had been aired in France, March 5th, dubbed in French. Emma has found the following info on some

you speak French, we would appreciate a
more precise translation (thanks)

April um.... 15?
Quick overview -- the latest stuff here
There are reports and pix
from the weekend elsewhere. I have a couple of links.
Scott will likely be seen on E! and Extra before
the Enterprise Ep with Dean airs, the anthem is
back up and I believe Janey is sending a copy to Jay (since she made the file
and he doesn't need 15 copies of it), I got a really nice autograph
and very little sleep (current as of
6:32pm EDT)
Greetings -- Weekend
Just a note to those I met this weekend for the first time--if I was a bit
scattered, maybe it was the parking... or maybe it was just Scott's presence or
impending presence (yes, I'm a fan--so sue me!) If I didn't say Hi with
sufficient fervor--it really was great to meet you guys, and wonderful to see
everyone else again too! Or as Scott put it--the new faces and the old friends.
I think you guys did your usual wonderful job of impressing everyone who met you
that Scott's fans are as impressive as he is. If not in entertainment industry
talent, definitely in character, kindness and welcoming.
I'm going to go and actually read some reports, okay?
thanks again
PS... After reading
Ralph's question regarding website and Scott's reply, I gathered my courage and
showed him a printout of ..whatever I could fit on one page (and the light blue
decided to print in aqua, so I had to explain that it really is more
readable online). So, while I never want to be an
official site (trust me, from my friends who run those types of
sites--it's quite complex being in that kind of position), at least Scott now
knows I'm nuts enough to be one of the people doing this "website
stuff," and he didn't laugh at me.
So I'm happy. I don't have a lot of stuff signed by Scott -- I hardly ever ask,
and never in person (this was my first time doing that) -- but this is really
special to me. If anyone cares what he wrote, let me know. My friends are still
trying to scrape "puddled Pam" from the floor and ceiling, but I
figure, it's only earth-shaking to me.
Now, for those of you who still think I'm trying to be "important" --
go back and re-read this whole section: Scott has probably forgotten by now that
I even exist. But that was never my goal here. It just happened that I
got to tell him for a moment and he didn't laugh at me.

Just me -- She's Baaack, but not quite conscious
just yet
It's Monday I think. Took a red-eye, pretty much haven't slept in two days. Now
downloading 287 pieces of new email...check for news, actually hoping not to
find any just yet (oh darn, I just heard an alert..) and then to bed. No film
developed yet--I was lucky to manage to drive to the airport.... Oh yeah,
managed to avoid hitting Scott's car with mine (rental) Saturday night--or so
I'm told.
Pictures when I get them developed...
Kay, I will call you... You want to hear me bubble, don't you?

Where did those files go?-- 7am
packing continues, film at 11...
Actually just a few reminder notes. I'll be leaving
tomorrow, Wednesday,
super early (as in--"no one should even be alive at this
hour"). If nothing breaks, I'll bring back pix, reports, etc. If not,
someone else will...
in the meantime
as of tomorrow, news, if I have any, will be posted on the message
board
if you don't mind digging thru the Scott drool, you can go direct to my #2
source -- Trudy's
message board. (personally, I like fan banter, but some people are in a
hurry :-) )
Also, I ditched a lot of KB's from this page last night, so it would load
faster and not wear out the bandwidth. So a lot of old news has been moved to page
2. Not the best solution, just the fastest. If some of the links in the menu
to the left don't work, try digging thru pages two and three... I'll try to sort
this out later, but.. you know... life. (At the rate I'm going, I'll have jet
lag before I even land.)
Reports and pix to follow. The first ones will probably be on Trudy's board.
please pardon any typos. Brain-dead now.

Behind the Scenes -- Enterprise April Fools
Prank on Scott
Dominic Keating told the audience at a convention this weekend about an April
Fool's Day prank the cast pulled on Scott. "We'd
discovered that years and years ago, Scott Bakula had done this, well, musical
dance commercial for Canada Dry Ginger Ale. So we found a copy of the ad and
managed to get it put up on the Bridge view screens when Scott wasn't there. We
all had Canada Dry cans and when Scott came through the bridge doors for his
scene, we all broke out into this 'Goin' Back To Canada Dry' song and
dance!"

Interview -- Scott talks about USS Enterprise
crew
As noted elsewhere, three crew members of the carrier USS Enterprise have been
on set as extras on Enterprise. In this article I haven't been able to
locate the exact source of, Scott talks about the ship and crew, his father and
future plans.
"We've kind of had a relationship with them since last year -- certainly with what happened on Sept. 11th elevated that," said Scott. "There's a connection obviously in the past with USS Enterprise and the Enterprise in the franchise.
We've been very connected to the crew. We've been
sending them tapes of the shows, taped messages and we've been getting back things. It's fantastic that they can make it here.
I think we're continuing a tradition. And I would like to think that if there comes a time that
we have this capability of actually putting this kind of a ship or something similar to it into space, I would hope
one of the first names they pick out will be Enterprise."
Plans are in the works for Bakula and other cast and crew to visit USS Enterprise in the future.
"I can't wait. I hope that will work out," Bakula said. "I've never
been on an aircraft carrier; I've only seen them in the movies."
Bakula, whose father served in the Navy as a pilot, is looking
forward to the experience. "I'm sure it will be really eye-opening
to be there in real life and see what's going on."
I'm not yet sure of the source of this article but

New UPN President of Entertainment "[Dawn] Tarnofsky-Ostroff emphasized that before
[working at] Lifetime, she worked at
developing shows at the 20th Century Fox television studio and introduced programs there for both men and women, including, prominently, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," now one of UPN's biggest hits.
"Mr. Moonves said he would "absolutely not" be making day-to-day program decisions at UPN. "I'll be
involved. I have always been as involved as I can be at everything I do. But Dawn is the head of programming. She's the division president. She'll be completely involved in the creative process."

Rumors -- Of Quantum Leap Movie
From the "Don't Hold Your Breath" Department (with tiny bits of
hope)
9:00am ET, 24-January-02
Quantum Reunion In Works?
With Scott Bakula's success in UPN's new Star Trek series, Enterprise, rumors are circulating that Universal is mulling the idea of bringing Bakula back to star in a Quantum Leap reunion film, according to a report on the Sy Fy Portal Web site.
The site and TV Guide Online, citing anonymous sources, say that the studio is considering a two-hour television film, most likely for NBC, that would pick up the storyline of Dr. Sam Beckett and his holographic
companion, Al (Dean Stockwell).
Quantum Leap creator Donald P. Bellisario recently told TV Guide that he has been working at getting a reunion movie together for quite some time, but "Universal, who truly owns the rights to it, has never shown an interest."
Enterprise is currently UPN's highest-rated show.

Snippet -- Scott's thoughts on possiblity of gay character
Scott
Bakula is speaking out about the dearth of gay characters on all five
"Star Trek" series.
Bakula, [and other Trek captains], is interviewed in a three-part series
featured in the February/March issue of MetroSource magazine, available in
Barnes & Noble and Borders stores.
"I'm really not familiar with the history of this particular issue with
regards to Star Trek,' " says Bakula about the long debate between the
gay community and "Star Trek" producer Paramount about including a gay
"Trek" character.
"I haven't heard anything coming down the pipeline, but I would be in favor
of it. I would hope it would be handled in a great way. It would be wonderful .
. . if it was not such a huge issue, but was just there."

From TrekToday
Enterprise network UPN

Article/Interview -- The Trek Franchise and
Days Off
"There's no other opportunity out there like Star Trek as an actor,"
Bakula acknowledges. "It's kind of overwhelming, this whole franchise.
There's never been anything like it and I dare say there will never be anything
else like it. When you are an actor on a Star Trek show you do kind of think
that, you'll be around for several years. I don't find that daunting. I'm kind
of excited about it. I like television, like the speed of it, like the challenge
of it, like the feeling of doing a day's; work. I like the creativity of this
genre. And on Enterprise I've got six other cast members to share the time and
the workload with, and that's been very reassuring in terms of my personal
life, so far as the time I'll have to be at work and to lead a life. So it
doesn't seem that daunting to me at this point. We should probably talk about
those aspects of it every year to see how I'm feeling, but right now it's been
very refreshing for me. I've already had a few days off and I've actually
been at a little bit of loss as to what to do with them." Bakula catches
himself and laughs. "Not that I'm sitting at home crying about it," he
adds. "I'm filling the time."

Article/Interview -- Emma found an article!
(Okay so I'm excited. So excited, in fact, that I'm going to use lots of page
space for it.)
Arizona Daily Star:
Tucson, Arizona Friday, 2 November 2001
BAKULA'S PROJECTS POPPING UP ALL OVER
Scott Bakula
* Born Oct. 9, 1954, in St. Louis
* Stands 6 feet tall
* An avid singer, he started a rock band in elementary school
* Was a Playgirl magazine coverboy in 1995
* Was a serious soccer and tennis player in high school
By Phil Villarreal
Arizona Daily Star
No, Scott Bakula can't actually jump through time, although it would appear that way these days.
The 46-year-old actor traversed times and personalities in television's "Quantum Leap" and also jumped 150 years in the future to play captain Jonathan Archer in Enterprise," the latest Star Trek TV incarnation.
With all that traveling, it's a wonder Bakula found time last month to star in a Showtime film "What Girls Learn," and play Kurt, a sympathetic police officer in "Life as a House," which opens today.
"It's just one of those things where a lot of things I did are coming out at the same time - I shot 'Life as a House' long before
'Enterprise' started," Bakula said during a recent telephone interview. "I did the Showtime movie in the spring. It seems crazy, but happily, in work time, they're spread out."
Bakula has succeeded in show biz for a quarter-century, starring in television, theater and movies.
You'd think he would no longer be starstruck by a fellow actor, but that's just what happened on the set of "Life as a House," which stars Kevin Kline as a man who tries to put his shambled life back together by building his
dream home.
Bakula had long admired Kline, but had never had a chance to meet him. He auditioned for "Life as a House" in hopes of meeting Kline, but Bakula was turned down for the role of Peter, the new husband of Kline's character's ex-wife.
Taking the disappointment in stride, Bakula gave little thought to the project again until months later, when the actor who was scheduled to play Kurt was injured in a mountain biking accident.
"I was excited to get the chance to work with him," Bakula said. "We're both from St. Louis. He was a little surprised, I think, to hear I idolized him.
He's such a big-hearted kind of guy. He's very generous and very available."
After that film wrapped, Bakula jumped at the chance to do "Star Trek." Television, he says, requires less travel and gives him the chance to spend more time with his family.
He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, actress Chelsea Field, whom he met on the set of "A Passion to Kill" and married in 1996. [Editor's clarification for the confused: As of Oct 2001, Scott has said they are not married] Bakula has four children: Chelsy, 17; Cody, 10; Wil, 5; and Owen, 2. The two older kids are from his previous marriage.
The role of captain Archer has broadened Bakula's sci-fi range and has been a load of fun so far, he says. "It's been good. People are really enjoying 'Enterprise,' and it seems to be off to really great start," Bakula said. "It's been all you can hope for."

Transcripted -- TV
Guide's Matt Roush lists Enterprise in his "Best of the Year 2001"
Dec 22 Issue
Under FANTASIES, The Classic:
After years of buzz-free coasting, the Star Trek franchise returned to its roots
and reinvigorated itself with UPN's enjoyable prequel, Enterprise. This
unpretentious adventure series, set 100 years before the original, has the feel
of a Western, as a crew of interstellar pioneers (led by the likable Scott
Bakula) fumble their way into strange new worlds. Their heroics are rough around
the edege in all the right ways.

Similarly, Enterprise,
UPN's latest twist on the venerable Star Trek brand, has been a stellar
performer. "Viewers are telling us they want comfort food, whether it's the
latest edition of Star Trek..., where you pretty much know how things are
going to end from the show's beginning," says Laura Caraccioli, of

Network news -- Enterprise
assured a place on the schedule when UPN merges with CBS television unit in
January
"...Buffy will stay, Enterprise will stay..." Leslie
Moonves told Mediaweek's John Consoli
yesterday
Moonves, president of CBS, will assume responsibility for UPN when current
Paramount Television Group president Kerry McCluggage
steps down in January next year (story).
Any major UPN shakeup probably won't happen until 2003. "On the air, you
might not see much change in the coming year," Moonves said. "That may
not happen until the following year [2003-04]."
With the current economic downturn, sources said that UPN's affiliate network is
also expected to be integrated into CBS. An official announcement from CBS on
its plans in this area is expected in the near future.

UPN/CBS merge, um, sort of
For those of you who were around during the time of Mr. & Mrs. Smith (aka
the time when the "end of the year" seemed to come at the beginning of
November) take a deep breath and start chanting to yourself over and over
"This is Star Trek." Okay, now you are ready to read this:
UPN parent company Viacom stated on Monday that CBS and UPN will remain separate
identities but will report to the same chief executive -- CBS's Leslie
Moonves.
"Today's announcement is the culmination of a process that began with the
merger of Viacom and CBS and realises an important opportunity to bring new
efficiencies to the broadcast business, while maintaining the distinct voices of
CBS and UPN as leaders in free, over-the-air broadcasting," said Viacom
President Mel Karmazin.

Ratings -- The Futon Critic Comments on
Enterprise Ratings
Following a link from this
article on Enterprise ratings at TrekToday, I found this:
Wednesdays: If "Buffy's" gains for UPN have been huge,
"Enterprise's" gains are nothing short of monumental. The latest
"Star Trek" incarnation has literally doubled (and then some) UPN's
viewership on Wednesdays at 8:00/7:00c. It's without a doubt
"Enterprise" is the biggest success thus far on any network in terms
of jumpstarting ratings.

Starlog and Star Trek Magazine
Took a trip to Barnes and Noble the other day. There are articles and pix on
both Starlog (December Issue, so hurry) and Star Trek The Magazine -- January
issue (which has
Scott on the cover)
Both had interviews with Scott with info I had not previously read concerning
why it took so long to sign him and what he took into consideration. The Starlog
also has a behind the scenes article on the sets and soundstages of Enterprise.
No pix in that, but I believe there's a bit of discussion from Scott about the
sets in that one.
Both are $8 in the US, $12 in Canada. For those of you who are already broke
trying to keep up:
If you're just in it for those 8 by 10 glossies, ST Magazine's pix are probably
better (and the cover is always nice, even if it's the same old pic again). If
you want reading material I'd go for the Starlog.
Both magazines have websites (Starlog
and Star Trek Magazine)
if you can't get to a local Borders or B&N.
I'll try to do some excerpting later on if no one else gets it done first :-)

Snippet, BTS -- Jeffrey Combs succeeds in not breaking Scott's nose (and other
behind-the-scenes ambiance descriptions--some parts new)
In an article written for TrekWeb by AntonyF with Enterprise guest actor Jeffrey
Combs (of the Andorian Incident) Jeffrey refers to the cast on Enterprise
as "tremendous, really great group of people.
[Theres] great morale and a large part of that is due to Scott Bakula. He
really sets a wonderful tone, has a great worth ethic, and really cares about
everything on every level. Hes very aware of all the elements, curious about
them, asks the right questions in the right way. So morale is just really high.
I dont know if the reference would work, but hes like a captain of a team.

working with him, although I was scared to death Id break his nose. I had to

Well, you didn't really think we were, right? But after Mr. & Mrs. Smith...
How about the opposite of cancellation?
From Project Quantum Leap Fan Club's
website:
The home office [I
believe this would be Scott's publicist :-)] also
reports UPN has re-upped Enterprise with a full two year order of episodes!
That means 13 additional episodes for 2001-2002, and 26 for 2002-2003.

Ratings, What I'm not reading
-- Ratings talk and future eps
By the way, the week before last week's episode, (Terra Nova) TrekToday
reported good, stabilized, and better than most recent "Trek 5th
episode", ratings (last week was the World Series, which they expected to
really kill the ratings for that week). I've stopped paying a lot of attention,
mostly, as promised. I'm a chronic worrier when it comes to such things, so I
try to stay out, but Trek Today keeps throwing them at me... I've not quite
perfected the art of not reading them. I'm a bit better at not reading the
Spoilers for future episodes, which is why you aren't reading them either
(unless, of course, you are doing "further research" :-)). I like to
see things fresh and new, so I generally only "delve" if there is new
commentary from or about Scott. I have friends, however, who do
"delve", so if I miss anything, I'm sure they will post it somewhere
and I will pass it on.

Message Boards -- A New Message Board
Sorry this is late, but I only heard about it yesterday. Trudy (of Completely
Scott) has started a new Scott
Message board. I'm not taking my message
board down (yet) but if you've wondered where everyone went... :-) Trudy's
board loads faster, threads better, and still supports HTML links and our
favorite--pictures. So if you are looking for a friendly bunch of Scott-obsessed
droolers, drop on over. (I'd recommend the website too (again): it's sort of
like "Scott's life, Illustrated" :-)
Online Goodies -- Cinescape Index Search
I was just over at Cinescape, looking for something, when I tried a search on Bakula.
I seriously recommend this. Halfway down the page you will find their archived
photographs of Scott (which also seem to be thumbnails you can enlarge to very
nice sizes). If you've missed anything, you might want to spend some time in
there. Archeology can be such fun :-)

Some new large pix from upcoming episodes can be found at this

upcoming episodes will be taking the "story-arc" format. The article
does contain some spoilers.
Video Online -- Backstage footage
A very large Windows media clip (28MB?) can be found at TrekNews.de.
(Hopefully I have reassembled that link properly). Most of this footage, I
believe was previously available on the Web... somewhere.. perhaps Zap2it. If
you didn't get it before, the scenes are from the rehearsals and taping for
"Unexpected" and also include the finished scene (which is great if
you live outside the US, but for the rest of us without cable or DSL took an
extra chunk of unneeded download time...). If you have a dial-up connection,
right click the link (when you get to the page) and download the file while you
are sleeping. That way the 2 to 3 hours it will take won't matter so much.

Words about Scott in review
This is a bit from a review by Jet Monkee
A Word about Bakula: He seems to have a real flare [sic]
for comedy, if the shower scene is any indication. I only recently caught him in
an episode of 'Quantum Leap,' and made the same observation (the man was wearing
a dress gotta admire that). I don't know if he'll get a chance to use that
fine comic timing all that often as Captain Archer, but I do hope to see it now
and then.

[Q]: What's it like working with Scott Bakula?
[A]: He's so great to work with. It's so nice to have someone who, when you

A Fun Review
There are so many reviews out there that it's impossible (and sometimes
disheartening) to read them all. But I have to hand it to Julia Houston at
About.com for being a woman with supremely good taste (from my totally biased
point of view <g>). And here's an excerpt.
NOTE THAT REVIEWS BY NATURE CONTAIN SPOILERS (if you live outside the US
or are on tape delay, this will spoil your fun.)
Archer is taking a shower with a strategically placed, somewhat minimalist metal
door. The drops of moisture glide over his rippling muscles, highlighting the
dark curls of his chest hair and falling reluctantly away from his strong legs.
Suddenly, the water isn't falling, and Archer is floating. Glimpses of hip and
thigh taunt us unmercifully as he reaches for the com and finds out the gravity
is acting up. For some reason, Archer seems to think this is a bad thing. He
also doesn't brace himself for the gravity's return.
THUNK! (and nice peek-a-boo shot)

than the staples in Entertainment Weekly).

Good words about Scott
Barbara has posted a nice review
of What Girls Learn on the QLIK message board. It's positive, but most of it
concerns the "girls." I just want to pull what Diane Werts says about
Scott:
Many things that don't deserve a bad rap seem to get one
anyway. Long Island ax-cents. Nostalgia. Having a good cry. Being a 13-year-old
girl. Films made for the entire family.
That all of these can be immensely satisfying is proven in Showtime's sublime
Sunday drama, "What Girls Learn," which also gives a good name to
letting actors produce their own movies. Scott Bakula... does the honors
here, and you want to write the guy a blank
check for his next effort.
could she? please? I'd like to see Night Never Ending...

Ratings
I said I wouldn't do this... You need to know why. If you wander over to the
Mr.
& Mrs. Smith section, I believe you can still find remnants of our
watching the (dismal) ratings back then. But when was the last time a Star Trek
series got cancelled? If you said 1969, you win. Having said that, the folks at TrekToday
are calling the ratings "worrying audience loss" and if you really
want to read a lot, you can visit this
article at Media Week where they say:
New programming scorecard:
-The Tradition Lives On (A):
Enterprise (UPN)
or just grab all your friends who are not Trekkers and tie them down and have
them watch this show (though many people will not recommend episode two). For
non Sci-Fi fans like me, all that green grass and blue sky was a reassuring
sight. (I also liked Star Trek 4, as it took place on Earth, present day, and
was funny).
On the up-side, those male demographics are still into it:
Enterprise remained the top-rated new drama among
all the networks in several important key demographics. These include adults
18-34, where 'Strange New World' scored a 4.8 rating / 14 share, men 18-34
(5.8/18), men 18-49 (6.4/17), men 25-54 (7.2/17) and male teens (3.8/13).

New Scott Interview
from an article that will appear in the next issue of Star Trek: Communicator
which features interviews with the entire cast. Here is Scott's portion:
"My biggest fear coming here was that the [stage]
crew that's been here forever, and had just rolled over the last huge VOYAGER
episode and had a week off and were back shooting the pilot, would be, like,
'Yeah, just get in the chair, whatever, and we'll shoot you.' But they are so
jazzed and excited... it's been great so far."...
If Archer is to be the closest thing to the bare-knuckled Kirk since James T.
himself, that equals a lot of what Hollywood calls "running and
jumping." "I just heard that I get my ass kicked in the next episode,
actually!" Bakula laughs (in "The Andorian Incident"). "It's
pretty physical. And they're enjoying writing to that... the pilot was very
physical...."
The Hollywood trade papers reported in May that the actor had been seeking
greater creative input into his captain than past TREK leads, but today he waves
that off as untrue.
"The only creative stake I have in it is I want it to be as good as it can
be. Rick and Brannon and I talk about character and plot and all that stuff, but
not in any kind of a 'veto power' way."....
If fans don't see him in person or online right away, this assured veteran of
the Leapers' conventions asks for their patience. "I have no plans right
now," he smiles. "My goal right now is to give everything I can to
each episode and really get the show off to a great start, promote that, and let
everybody get their feet underneath them. Then we'll see where everything else
takes us. I want to deliver a great show and hopefully a great captain and
continue the tradition."

Ratings--week 2
"Enterprise'' (9.18 million, 4.6/13)
retained an impressive 73% of its premiere 18-49 rating (4.6 vs. 6.3), finishing
second to ABC in the 8 p.m. hour. That 27% falloff is better than the 33% drop
that ``Star Trek: Voyager" experienced with the first episode following its
premiere on UPN in 1995.
"Enterprise'' won its hour in all adult male demos.

Spirits were high on the set of Enterprise
last week as news spread [that] the show's incredible, out-of-this-world
premiere pulled in the second highest ratings ever for the Paramount network --
second only to the premiere of Voyager in 1995
"I'm very happy, are you kidding me?"
Bakula told ET's Mark Steines. "I walked on
the lot, and Steve, our security guy, said, 'Congratulations Scott!"
Scott was overjoyed with the success of the show's debut, and a week after the
big premiere screening on the Paramount lot, chose to lay low and watch the
first airing of Enterprise at home with his family. He said, "You
work hard, you do the stuff, and you hope somebody shows up to watch it."
Access Hollywood also featured a quick tour of the ship, hosted by Scott.

Reviews
I can't do this better than Helene, so, for those of you who don't read the
message board, I'm going to just quote her
Delta
Blues
"Bakula's Archer is the one to watch, since the captain's presence will
likely make or break the series. His performance was a bit uneven--not wildly so
compared to some of the other Trek pilots, but noticeable to someone who's
watched him elsewhere. The dialog didn't always help, but again this ought to
settle down in time. In action scenes, with non-verbal reaction shots, I saw
plenty of promise. I wasn't expecting a seasoned captain--he's Starfleet's first
real Starship commander, and he was on his first mission. He's not going to
swagger like Kirk. He may know every admiral by their first name, but he's also
the kid of the guy who built the drive, so it's more a personal than a
professional quest. The flashback scenes helped fill in some of his motivation,
and his strengths and flaws.
Cynic's
Corner?
THE BOTTOM LINE: A surprisingly good start. Who'd have thought?
CYNICS CORNER RATING: 8.0
At http://members.tripod.com/~jetcmonkee/
the author gave the show a 9 out of 10 and wrote:
Archer: I already like him! He doesn't really remind me of any of the other
Captains, which is good. He's his own guy, and he seems both friendly and
commanding. My favorite Archer scene? The LOOK on his face when Tucker beamed
him up! That was priceless! He looked like he would much rather have taken his
chances with the Suliban. My favorite Archer line? "If I'm going to pull
this off, there are things I need to leave behind. Things like preconceptions,
and holding grudges." With an attitude like that, I'd follow him anywhere.

Scott Quotes from Kansas City Star
"It's probably as romantic a role as I've ever
had," Bakula said in an interview as he was finishing the eighth hour of
"Enterprise" (and, it should be noted, four days before the terrorist
attacks). "Just the idea of being the captain of your own ship, that's
romantic right there. And my character is supposed to be like Kirk, in that
he'll get, uh, involved. I expect it to be a sexy show," he said, laughing.
Not as demanding as his "Enterprise" role is shaping up to be.
"In 'Quantum Leap,' everyone says I was playing a different character every
week, but I really wasn't. I was playing one character who was exploring aspects
of what it was like to experience another person's identity each week. It was only near the end, with
shows like Oswald, where we took creative license and had my character lose
himself a bit in the character he was inhabiting."
Bakula spends much of his time acting against a green or blue special-effects
screen.
"If it would have required a lot of makeup, and hours in the chair putting
on prosthetics each day, I don't know if I could have taken the role. I'm at the
stage of my career, especially after 'Quantum Leap,' where I don't think I could
do that."

Final Ratings
National ratings for 'Broken
Bow' showed that the Enterprise premiere gave UPN its second-biggest
audience ever. Only the premiere of Voyager in 1995, achieved higher
viewership figures. 12.54 million people watched the maiden flight of the
NX-01.
Variety released detailed demographic info on 'Broken Bow.' Enterprise
was most popular in the 18-45 market, with a 6.3 rating and a share of 16. In
adults aged 18-34, the show scored a 5.2 rating and a share of 15; meaning that Enterprise
was the most watched show by people in these categories from 8-10 p.m on
Wednesday night.
A rating of 8.3 in men aged 18-25 and 7.2 in males aged 18-49, with female
viewers, a 5.4 rating among women aged 18-49.
UPN was the most-watched network in many important markets, including New York,
San Francisco and Detroit

First Ratings Overnight Ratings--Massive--YIPPPPPEEEEEE!!!! Pam's voyage to Enterprise--News follows, feel free to skip this Scott quote from NandoTimes
My brother (the family's original Trek fan) has posted a wonderful review

you want to see why I was in such a crappy mood last night. I haven't
finished reading it myself, but... He has a few comments on the show

ENTERPRISE
BEAMS UP BIG RATINGS: The premiere
of ..Enterprise,
notched out-of-this-world ratings Wednesday night at least by UPN
standards. According to preliminary data, the Scott Bakula-led series
finished a strong second place from 9-10 pm behind CBS's 60 Minutes
II at 8 pm and a rerun of NBC's The West Wing at 9 pm.
from TVGuide.com
this is from TrekToday,
(source Zap2it.com),
cuts and some commentary from me
These are the overnight ratings from the top 47 television markets in the
country. The final national ratings, measuring all markets, should be
available within a few days.
Enterprise got ... ratings not seen since the early seasons of Star
Trek: Voyager and beating all networks besides NBC, with a 9.9
overnight rating and a 15 share. This means that out of all the
households with television sets in America, approximately 9.9% were tuned
in to Enterprise, while of those households actually watching TV, 15% were
watching Enterprise.
The second hour of 'Broken Bow' took in slightly higher ratings than the
first hour, [meaning people didn't tune out, except for the West Wing
rerun].
In the 8-9 timeslot, Enterprise lifted UPN to second place among
the six major networks. Only CBS managed to narrowly beat Enterprise
with 60 Minutes II..
ABC's My Wife and Kids placed third with an 8.4/13, two Fox
comedies (5.6/9), NBC's Lost (4.6/7) and the WB movie (2.4/3).
9-10pm: Enterprise was beaten by a first-season repeat of West
Wing, 10.4/15. 'Broken Bow' again easily beat all other shows,
including The Drew Carey Show (6.6/10), CBS's The Amazing Race
(6.0/9), Fox's Love Cruise (5.7/9) and the WB movie
As for Trek ratings, Enterprise beat the Voyager finale, and only one
Voyager ep seemed to have more ratings
As Star Trek tends to be most popular in large urban markets, the
premiere's final ratings will likely be a bit lower than the overnight
ratings.
thanks to TrekToday.
I won't take up too much of your time, but,
Driving into Tampa, we saw a Billboard, I was excited. It said "Come
aboard, we've been expecting you." My brother started singing the
theme to the Love Boat :-) (knew I'd heard that phrase before!). When we
got near, Klingons lined the streets, holding signs, advertising the
"event." It was all downhill from there. Screw-ups from the
affiliate left us with no tape, only the snowy off-air episode itself, and
the sound system (what sound system?) left us to lip-read the dialog which
could hardly be heard over the conversation of the other fans.. (if it
weren't for the tons of spoilers I have read, I'd have had an even harder
time following the episode)
When I got home and watched the tape I learned--the episode was much more
interesting with dialog!
"I saw every episode a couple times," star
Scott Bakula said
about the original "Trek." "Then the
movies came out, and I wasthere."...."I love this relationship. The business with
Spock constantly fighting with Bones (Dr. McCoy) - I always loved
it."

Interviews Scott and fans
"We're constantly banging our heads in the Ready Room," Bakula
said. "For me, it adds a reality to the set that will play great for
the show. When the lights are low and you cut through one set to another,
it's easy to feel like this is real."

story
Helping ground
this new enterprise is the inspired selection of Scott Bakula (Quantum
Leap) to play new captain Jonathan Archer, a gung-ho space cowboy who
hates being patronized by Vulcans or anyone who'd keep him from blasting
off into the great unknown. As promised by the producers, he's a less
stuffy, more emotionally engaging leader than we've seen in years....
There's something refreshing about watching a Starfleet pilot who can't
quite land his vessel without bumping into something, or communications
devices that short out in bad weather...
Even though Enterprise gets off to a somewhat stodgy start, it's
the best Trek premise since Star
Trek: The Next Generation. And in another good sign, it doesn't
appear to take itself too seriously, as when Archer declares after one
harrowing escapade, "Let's hope that's the last time somebody takes a
shot at us."

Review with spoilers
You can read this tomorrow around 10pm... :-) In the meantime note that there
are a lot of quotes from Scott in this one. The original series is
mentioned a lot as well.

posting of it (and thanks as always)
From Zap2it
Bakula is a genuine TV star, with his
ship's-prow profile, warmth, good humor and up-and-at-'em energy. His
Archer is a "damn the torpedoes" kind of guy, possessing Kirk's
sense of adventure without his bullheadedness, and Picard's innate dignity
without his philosophizing (and he looks really good in skivvies), so he
decides to take his brand-spankin'-new starship and ferry the wounded
Klingon home, at the mind-boggling speed of ... WARP FIVE!

Looking
for Scott's CDs?
For those of you who read the Entertainment Weekly article, Scott's CDs can
be found here. (And the
site has not been here since the QL days, only since December '95).
Sharon's
picks for Print Promos
Sharon Major, of Project Quantum Leap, sent this to Jo.
I'm just going to copy the whole thing (adding some subheads). She's been doing
some deep digging here.
Entertainment Weekly (Sept 28)
Not only was the EW review (posted earlier) a most welcome event, but the
issue itself (Sept 28) is not to be missed. The review is spread over 1 and 1/3
pages, including a pic of the crew, plus there is a full page ad for Enterprise
on page 45. But that's not all. Flip over to the end of the magazine (p. 77) and
once again Scott graces the page with mentions for a variety of Star Trek
websites.
Cinescape 53 (Oct)
The current issue of Cinescape (Oct, #53) with the Fall TV Preview has been
published with two different covers. Luckily my newstand had the Scott-cover.
Starlog 291 (Oct)
And for those of you who haven't bothered to go past the cover story for the
October (#291) Starlog, check out the last page of the issue and you'll find yet
another Scott pic!
So I have my list (including that Starburst Special). Time to go off to Barnes and Noble...

Reviews
abound
Too many! There are some on the message
board, some at TrekToday.
Here's a bit I liked, from Viacom Girl at Ain'tItCoolNews:
...but most of the praise should be heaped upon Scott
Bakula, who commands both the ship and show as a true star should. Everyone will
like Scott Bakula in this, including those who may not have liked him before
of course the St Pete Times thinks the show begins
Monday (but only in the TV Times section)... (I miss Boston, perhaps I'll check
the Globe) Times TV Critic Eric Deggans, in his column TV serves up comfort
food for the brain, says he received his review video of Enterprise in the
mail on September 11... he said that after a few days of watching the news, he
"needed a dose of phasers and warp drive."

I'm going to pull one quote ('cause I was thrilled to read it) from "Enterprise"
Review by AristoMenis
Over the course of 2 TV hours at a Paramount HD equipped
cinema, 'Broken Bow', the premier episode for a bold new series simply called
'Enterprise', has miraculously reinvigorated and re-invented a franchise that
appeared to be in it's twilight years. Before any details are revealed (which I
will keep to a minimum), it should be said that Enterprise is good, really good.
In fact it's the best, most fully developed premier episode of any Star Trek
incarnation to date...
Bakula's Jonathan Archer is perfectly cast. The actor fills the captain's shoes
so confidently that it feels as though he's been playing the role for years.
this is so long I haven't even finished reading it yet

It was very short. Apparently, they were
having the premiere for "Enterprise" last night and it was delayed
because of all the security checks. Scott said that he
was "overwhelmed and did not know if they would be able to pull it
off." [Apparently, they did]]
