Painted Faces

The Painted Faces of the Chinese Opera evolved from masks used in the opera performances as far back as the Tang Dynasty (619-907). Each mask is different, with the colors used to identify the type of character being played. This book is 2 x 2 5/8" with striped paper along the spine. Kang Xi

Emperor Kang Xi ruled during the Qing Dynasty (1662). He was, as emperors go, a fairly good one, educated, cultured and clever. The book is 2 15/16 x 2 1/2 inches and has gold embroidered silk over boards. There are two handsewn texts, one on each side of an "n" shaped cover... The shoe, even up to the present time, continues to appear in those stories that come down to us. The stories of the wonderful "Seven League Boots," "Mercury's Winged Sandals," "Puss in Boots," "Cinderella" and others, all existed in some ancient and nearly forgotton tongue, but are still well known to children. The book itself is 1 3/8 x 1 1/2 inches and fits into a richly carved bone shoe from Thailand, just 1 3/4 inches long.
