Other lives, other drives
I began my art life as a painter. Then I
turned my hand to ceramics making many darling dog dishes before
retrofitting the studio and acquiring the expertise to learn
papermaking, marbling and bookbinding.
Diversions: Somewhere in there, I think
in between raising kids and pottery, photography captured my
interest. We all had fun mucking about in the dark room.
A real job: I was, for many years, an
assistant animator in the film cartoon business No, I didn't work
for Walt Disney, but drawing 8 hours a day certainly sharpened my
skills considerably.
...but I have always been a teacher.

am from Sacramento, CA. After a number of roundabout routes,
like growing up, going to colleges and art schools and raising a
couple of kids (1 of each persuasion), I find my present
existence quite to my liking. I am the sole proprietor of
Pequeño Press
(estab. 1982), the publishing and teaching facility for
bookbinding, marbling and edition book production
workshops. I also have an apprenticeship program which allows
people to come for 2 to 6 months and work in the studios learning
all these things plus how a small business is run.
After living in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico,
for 10 years, and Bisbee AZ for another 10 years, I relocated in
Santa Maria CA. Then during the year of 2004 I taught Western Book
Arts at Hebei University in China. My new Tucson studio is now opened
. Keep in touch!

Like many developments in the history of avant
garde, artist's books have
emerged from a variety of influences which established an
aesthetic foundation for my books. The current generation
of artists makes use of some of the basic structures of the codex
and flies off into the blue for the finish. If my expressive art
forms push ideas just beyond habitual limits, it is because I
have quintessentially,
rather than incidentally, elevated the genre: The Book
As Art.
