Jewish Photographs
in the Lithuanian Archive of Image and Sound

Conscripts to the Russian Army, 1900-1914

Laima Tautviasaite, Director of the Lithuanian State Historical Archives in Vilnius, Lithuania, recently presented to me a CD ROM entitled "Collection of the Photographic Portraits of the Conscripts to the Russian Army, 1900-1914." The Lithuanian Archives of Image and Sound in Vilnius--a little-known archive and one of the last places most researchers would look for genealogical records--had produced the CD. Included on the CD is an index of 1,222 names of Jewish conscripts (1900-14) from Vilnius province, their photographs, the name of the official photographer who took their picture and the date the photograph was taken. The quality of the photographs is outstanding, and the backs of each photo contains some information, in Russian, about the person. For some conscripts, paper documents exist in the archive with additional information. The information about the conscripts on the photographs and in the paper documents is brief and variable. Some have date of birth; others supply only religion and social position. The index does not list the army unit in which the conscript served.

Dalius Zizys, director of the Lithuanian Archives of Image and Sound, granted permission for the data to be displayed on JewishGen, where the complete index of conscripts' names as well as the names of the photographers can be accessed. They can be accessed at
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Lithuania/VilnaConscriptsPhotos.htm
There is also an alphabetical list posted at
http://www.mindspring.com/~peggyf/Lithuania/jewish-conscripts.htm

For a fee of $30, the archives will send a color copy of the original photograph along with an English translation of the information that exists about the conscript. Personal checks are accepted. The archives also has information about the photographers who were from Lithuania, many of them Jewish.

In response I received a list of photographs of Jews and Jewish subjects stored in the archives, along with the cost of obtaining a copy of one of the photographs. All photographs are in black and white.
