Mrs. Clinton Shirey
(by Mrs. Robert Curll)
Monroe township lost one of its finest Christian ladies when the spirit of Mrs. Clinton Shirey left its temporary temple last Thursday evening, May 14, 1926, and went to dwell in the mansion above prepared for her loyal and faithful spirit by Him who gave her spirit in the beginning. Mrs. Shirey was born in Reidsburg, Clarion county, Feb. 15th, 1850, the daughter of Jacob and Lavina (Wilson) Ben. Her childhood, girlhood, early womanhood and maturity were fragrant chapters lived in our midst and now gone on to a life of renewed activity yonder. Mrs. Shirley was early orphaned. Her mother died when she was but three days old. Her mother when dying gave her into the care of her two aunts, Misses Sarah and Margaret Wilson, also of Reidsburg, and never were mother and daughter more devoted. She attended school at Reid Institute in Reidsburg and taught several terms of school, having taught seven terms in one school. She was a fine student, a great reader and possessed a mind of most excellent quality. At an early age, she consecreated her life to Jesus and joined the Presbyterian church at Churchville to which faith she has been a loyal and faithful servant the end. Mrs. Shirley, nee Sarah Lavina Ben, was united in marriage to Clinton Shirley on August 19, 1880. To this union were born three children, namely, Bird of Freedom, Pa.; Clair of Canada, and Mrs. Reid Williams, also of Freedom, Pa., who are left to mourn the loss of a mother, who had reared her own monument while she lived in the hearts of all who knew her, and she died as she had lived, loved, honored and trusted by all who knew her and laid down her cross and took up her crown, for she had fought a good fight and had finished the course and had kept the faith and now she has gone to take up her crown of righteousness which God provides for those who are faith-unto death.
Funeral services were held in the home on Thursday p. m., conducted by Rev. McCurdy. Music was furnished by a quartette and interment made in the Churchville cemetery to await the resurrection.
Mother was tired and weary,
Put by her glasses and rocker,
SPECIAL NOTE :
I believe that the word "faith-unto" is a typo. It should probably be "faithly unto". Also, I do not believe that the last paragraph is complete! The fact that it ends with a comma should help support the fact that someone did not cut out all of the article!!
