Mrs. Emery L. Gathers
Mrs. Emery L. Gathers was killed by lightning during the storm last Wednesday evening, August 2, at her home in Monroe Township. She had just brought in the milk and was getting it ready to put away when a lightning stroke hit a telephone wire near the house and entering the cellar, struck Mrs. Gathers, causing instant death.
Mrs. Gathers was one of the estimable Christian women of her community and her sudden death shocked the neighborhood. She was born in Piney Township on September 15, 1869, a daughter of Jacob and Margaret Krauss. On October 15, 1891, she was united in marriage to Emery L. Gathersr at Shippenville. She is survived by her husband and three children: Glenn E. Gathers of Reidsburg, Miss Alice Gathers, a teacher in New Kensington schools and Lena Ruth at home. One brother, Charles J. Krauss of Piney Township, and five sisters, Mrs. Henry H. Tice of Clarion, Mrs. N. E. Thompson, Mrs. H C Rhea, Mrs. C W Kemerer all of Pittsburgh, and Mrs. L. C. Metes of Philadelphia, and two grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held last Saturday morning, August 5, at 10 oclock, and were conducted by Rev. William Wheeler, who took his text from the 14th Chapter of John, the favorite chapter of the deceased. Interment was made in the Reidsburg cemetery.
