The Mystic Gryphon

Sabbats

Did you ever take part in a May Pole dance back in elementary school - long, bright colored ribbons were attached to the top of a long pole, everyone grabbed a ribbon, half faced clockwise, the other half faced counter clockwise, then everyone began weaving under and over one another and when you could no longer weave over and under the ends of the ribbon were tied off and you had a beautifully decorated pole. More than likely, this was done on May 1. Did you ever know why this was? Do you know what is special about May 1? May Day? Beltane?

During the course of the year, there are eight major holidays in the pagan community:

  • Samhain
  • Winter Solstice (Yule)
  • Imbolc
  • Spring Equinox
  • Beltane
  • Summer Solstice
  • Lammas
  • Autumn Equinox.

This class discusses each holiday, its significance, ways of celebrating it, its importance in the cycle of the year, the deities associated with each festival. The cultural and social aspects of these holidays are also discussed.

Another topic discussed in this lesson is the creation of an Altar - the location, the material used, the items needed. The dedication and use of the altar are discussed.

The tarot card of this evening is The High Priestess.
