JOSEPH ROARK, HIS LIFE and TIMES

Joseph Roark (1813-1876) left Claiborne County, Tennessee, at age 19, to homestead in lands vacated by the Cherokees. A biography of James A. Roark (1840-1905), eldest son of Joseph and Juda Carr Roark, is available through the Roark Conner Association. The biography, entitled, Hardtack and Hardship, provides the ancestry of James A. Roark back to Virginia in 1780 and follows the migration of the family to Hamilton County, Tennessee. The subject is followed throughout the Civil War, the hardship of Reconstruction, his marriage to America McGill, his later move to Texas, and the dispersion of his family. A brief genealogy is provided on the Carrs, Conners, and McGills.
