Rumors, Rumors

Apparently, Herb is keeping all his options open for this year.
Whether that means someone is leaving the program, or the oft-rumored
Archie Miller scholarship becomes available, or it's just an insurance
policy, I do not know. But following is a list of names the Pack coaches
are keeping close contact with:

  • Reggie Brown, 6-4 WG, Briarwood, NY, Archbishop Molloy HS

  • According to Gibbons, Pack is very interested; best unsigned shooter.

  • Marshall Willliams, 6-5 G/F, Milwaukee, WI, Vincent HS

  • Williams is a Top 50 player, but academics are a serious concern

  • Joe Shipp, 6'5, 218-pound, G/F, Los Angeles, CA, Fairfax HS

  • Fully qualified, NC State coaches watched him in person on 1/27/99.

Damien Wilkins Update

From all reports, Damien Wilkins had a great visit to Raleigh last weekend.
It is significant to note that his Mom lives in Little Washington. Damien may
announce as early as next week (the fall signing period begins on 11-11), and
many of the recruiting gurus (Hulan Pickett, Bob Gibbons, Clark Francis, et. al.)
are saying NC State looks to be in real good shape.

next week, after initially predicting the choice would be Georgia Tech.

Forte News

Joe Forte will make his official visit to Raleigh this weekend (10-23).
He visted Ga. Tech last weekend, and will be in Chapel Hill
the following weekend. TSB continues to believe it is a two-team
race between NC State and UNC-CH. If you see him on campus,
make him feel welcome, but let Herb and his staff do the recruiting.

FOTO Recruiting News:

Thad Mumau has an update that maintains the conventional wisdom that Forte
is a lock for the Tar Heels because they are only targting him and Mike Dunleavy
(who Mumau predicts will wind up at Duke). We hear its not that much of a done-deal,
but history is on the Heels side in these situations. Most of his other news is pretty old.

There is an unconfirmed report, that Top-20 Junior Wing Guard Jerome Harper
of Columbia, SC made an unofficial visit to Raleigh last weekend.

Pickett on WPTF Last Night

Hulan Pickett made his monthly recruiting appearance on WPTF 680 AM last night.
As TSB has been reporting for some time, NC State’s focus for its sole remaining scholarship is on four players:

(1) Joe Forte; (2) George Williams; (3) Damien Wilkins; and (4) Jason Kapono.

Joe Forte is considering UNC-CH and Georgia Tech, along with the Pack. According to his sources within the DeMatha HS basketball program, Hulan says it is basically a two-team race between the Pack and the Heels. Joe will make official visits to all 3 schools between now and the signing date in mid-November.

George Williams already visited NC State and hometown-Houston. Hulan talked to Williams’ coach who said George wants to take all his visits. Other schools mentioned are Texas, Vanderbilt, New Mexico, and Southern Cal. Hulan sees it coming down to NC State and the ACC versus hometown Houston and new coach Clyde Drexler.

Damien Wilkins, the son of NBA star Gerald and nephew of Dominique, has three schools remaining on his list: NC State, Georgia Tech, and Kentucky, with official visits planned for all of them. Hulan sees it really as a 2-team race between the Pack and the Jackets, as Kentucky likely will be out of scholarships when Damien makes his decision.

Jason Kapono has the Pack high on his list, and despite being from California, is not averse to relocating for college. He has several east coast and midwest schools on his list. He does not plan to make a decision until spring, at which time the Pack may no longer have a scholarship to offer.

W-S: "Louisville prep star to enroll at NC State"
"He will be eligible to practice on Dec. 16,

Williams Rumors

Apparently, yesterday's rumor on George Williams was only half true.
Williams has not committed (at least publicly) to the Pack. It looks like
he will be taking some more visits to Vanderbilt, Texas, Houston, and
possibly Michigan. The Pack is still in great shape with George, though,
whose coach says he has always wanted to play college ball in North Carolina.

The other part of the rumor concerning Ray Henderson appears to be true,
especially since it came dircetly from his HS coach. The Pack had an offer
out to Henderson (and a number of players), but Henderson hesitated, and
Anthony Grundy got the slot that had been offered to him, even though they
play different positions. Herb must feel good about his chances with Joe Forte,
George Williams, Jason Kapono, and Damien Wilkins.

N&O: Tim Stevens: Pack to get Guard for Spring

Charlotte Observer: "Pack rejects Henderson's offer"
The article also says that the Pack
recieved a commitment from George Williams.
TSB is attempting to verify this information
but at this time it is questionable at best.

The Wolfpacker: "George Williams Makes Official Visit"

N&R: "State, UNCG commitments to fill needs now or next year"
"Anthony Grundy ... will sign with N.C. State next month
and will begin classes in January. He will be theoretically
eligible to play as early as Dec. 17, when State hosts
Winthrop, but he said the Wolfpack coaches won't decide
whether to play him or redshirt him until seeing him in practice."

FOTO: "ACC schools have 11 commitments"
Grundy is not mentioned. Lately, Thad Mumau's articles
are either stale or contain some erroneous information.

The Wolfpacker: "Wolfpack Target Matt Carroll "
Either Mumau's is behind again or the reports that
Carroll had removed NC State from his list were premature.

Jason Kapono Update

According to West Coast Hoops, Jason Kapono, a top 15 player,
has NC State in his final list of 4 schools, along with Utah, UNLV,
and Missouri. He plans to make an official visit to all 4 between now
and next April. Jason is not expected to commit this fall. Coach Sendek
had an in-home (one of twelve granted) with Jason the week of Sept. 9th.

George Williams Visit

George Williams, the outstanding WF/PF from Texas, visited NC State
officially last weekend, along with Anthony Grundy. Williams final list
of schools is reported to be NC State, Michigan, and Vanderbilt.

Pack Gets Second Commitment!!!
Anthony Grundy could join the Pack
after the conclusion of the 1st semester.

N&O: "Prep-school guard Grundy picks Wolfpack"

Recruiting Notes

As expected Andrew Sullivan gave a verbal to Villanova yesterday.

Anthony Grundy and George Williams will both visit NC State this weekend.
Most sources believe that Grundy will commit during or shortly after his visit,
and many recruiting gurus also believe NC State to be at the top of Williams'
list as well. Could be a productive weekend for the Pack.

The Charlotte Observer has a new (and most likely
erroneous) viewpoint on the Carroll / Grundy story

N&O: Known ACC Commitments

Sullivan to Villanova

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Andrew Sullivan will annnounce
at a 3 p.m. news conference today that he has orally committed to
long-time favorite Villanova, as expected.

The recruiting targets page has been updated.
There are now three tables to reduce clutter:
(1) active targets, (2) players who committed elsewhere,
and (3) players no longer being pursued by NC State.

"St. Augustine's Sullivan will pick college"

While some recruting sites are listing Andrew Sullivan
to Villanova, Sullivan's coach maintains that he hasn't made
his decision. His annoucement is expected at 3pm on Tuesday.

Grundy and Sullivan Appear on Radar Screen

Former Pack target, Anthony Grundy, who spent last season at Hargrave Military while trying to obtain a release from his LOI he signed with Bradley 2 years ago, is reportedly (by several reliable sources) very interested and likely to join the Wolfpack for the second semester. You might remember that Grundy had his LOI to Bradley invalidated by the NCAA, because his legal guardian never signed the document, and Anthony was under-age when he signed. The invalidation occurred after fall classes had started at most colleges, however. He would become eligible as soon as fall semester exams are over. Grundy is a great athlete, who reportedly has greatly improved his outside shooting, can play either guard position, and starred in the post season tournaments he attended. He is an immediate impact-type player.

Also, Herb secured a visit with top-50 New Jersey wing forward/power forward Andrew Sullivan. Sullivan who is 6'8", originally hails from England. He was so impressed with Herb on his in-home visit, that he dropped all other schools under consideration, save the Pack, and early favorite Villanova. Most experts believe 'Nova is still the likely destination for Sullivan.

Where does this leave us with the other players we are still in hot pursuit of such as: Matt Carroll, Joe Forte, Justin Hamilton, Damien Wilkins, George Williams, Jason Kapono, and Ray Henderson? Stay tuned.

Matt Carroll News

Here's an interesting story on Matt Carroll from the Harrisburg (PA) Patriot-News.
It talks about Matt's visit to Raleigh this past weekend, and also
have some news on his recruitment from his Dad's perspective.

The following Target List player profiles are updated:
Greg Morton
Travis Watson
Matt Carroll
Joe Forte

Recruiting News

FOTO: Thad Mumau Column
The article is primarily about Casey Sanders committing to Duke,
but there is a blurb near the end on Matt Carroll's official visit.
Thad states that no one would be surprised if Matt commits to the Pack
in the near future, although he has several other official visits lined up.
Mumau also mentions that the Pack had stopped recruiting
Ron Blackshear prior to his commitment to Clemson.

Matt Carroll

Matt indeed made his visit to Raleigh this weekend. He was spotted
at the Upper Deck 2 on Avent Ferry Road with several current team
members and coaches, cheering the Pack on against Baylor. No word yet
on how the visit went overall. Here is a story, though, on Matt from the
Philadelphia Inquirer from a couple of weeks ago.

Matt Carroll Update

Matt Carroll is making his official campus visit this weekend (9/18-9/20).
Herb had an in-home visit with Matt this past Sunday (9/13). Several
sources, including Demon Deacon Recruiting Report, are expecting Matt to
commit to the Pack this weekend.

NC State is mentioned frequently.

Kenny Satterfield picks Cincinatti; Casey Jacobson chooses Stanford

The Pack had cooled on Satterfield. Jacobson was never serious about
NC State, but he was a major target of Duke. Now that he has verballed
to the Cardinal, he is trying to lure his west coast buddy Mike Dunleavy
there as well. Why is this important to NC State? Because UNC-CH is only
targeting 2 players right now for the fall: Dunleavy and Joe Forte. If Dunleavy
chooses Stanford or Duke over the Heels, that makes Forte their only real
target, and probably makes it even harder for someone else to pry him away
from them. Let's hope Dunleavy likes Coach Gut and the Hill...a lot.

In-Home Visits

Coaches can start making in-home visits with recruits this week,
and continuing throughout the month of September. Coach Sendek
looks to rack up a lot of frequent flier miles in the process, as he
will be calling on the following targets:

Matt Carroll 9/13
Joe Forte 9/15
Justin Hamilton this month
Jason Kapono this week
George Williams 9/23

NC State, Georgia Tech, and Kentucky.

Odds and Ends

Grundy Released From LOI
Anthony Grundy, a 6'3" Combo Guard from Kentucky, who spent last season at Hargrave Military has received an official release from his Bradley LOI. After signing the Bradley LOI in 1997, Grundy decided that he had the skills for a more bigtime program and had been seeking a release from Bradley ever since. Bradley had been reluctant to grant said release. We believe the release granted was by action of the NCAA, meaning he would be eligible to go play anywhere immediately. Of course, most schools have already started fall classes, so it may be difficult to gain admittance this fall. The spring is more likely. Why is this significant for the Pack? Grundy was recruited by Herb and Co., last year while awaiting his release at Hargrave. Reports now link him with the Pack again, along with Kentucky, Cincinatti, and Auburn. Given that he is similar in skills to Cliff Crawford, we have strong doubts that we would make an offer at this point, but Herb has fooled us before.

In-home With Forte
Super DeMatha WG Joe Forte is down to 4 schools, all of which will be granted in-home visits. The 4 are NC State, UNC-CH, Georgia Tech, and Villanova. More info as it becomes available.

Travis Robinson Post-mortems
Apparently, the Pack was fairly serious about Travis Robinson following his release from Missouri. But he couldn't get past someone's admissions requirements: we've heard it range anywhere from the NC State Admissions Dept., Chancellor Fox, and Herb himself. Whatever the story, Travis is not coming to NC State. And he won't be going to UConn either as he reported just yesterday. In fact, it now looks like he will wind up at Prep School as he tries to get his personal problems behind him. As badly as the Pack needs another wing scorer, and admittedly we don't know the whole story with Robinson, it is our opinion that we are better off without him and any baggage he might bring to the program.

Boston Shootout News:

Adam Harrington particiapted in the Boston Shootout (thanks to Ben Sherman's UNC-CH Page for the link) this past weekend, scoring 30 pts and hauling in 11 rebounds on Friday night. On Saturday, he had 27 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Adam showed his NBA 3-point range, as well as an ability to fearlessly take the ball to the hoop on drives. His outstanding play was rewarded with a spot on the eleven-man All-Tournament team. His other teammates included top-25 recruit Mike Miller of South Dakota who will play at Florida this year, and top-10 rising senior Matt Bonner of New Hampshire who starred at the Bob Gibbons Tournament over Memorial Day weekend.

Biz Column: NC State Alum Ed Woolard Endows Scholarship

When the N.C. State men's basketball team lands its next
Rodney Monroe or C.C. Harrison, it can thank Edgar Woolard
for footing the bill.

Woolard, a retired chairman and chief executive officer of
DuPont, has endowed a $250,000 scholarship specifically for
a shooting guard. It's the first position-specific scholarship
at the school.

" We've had a rich history and tradition of outstanding basketball
since I was in college there in 1956, and we've hit a difficult
patch here the last few years," Woolard said in a statement.
" I was interested in seeing us return to being one of the leading
teams in the country year in and year out."

Just one question: If the Wolfpack brings someone in as a shooting
guard and Coach Herb Sendek moves him to point guard, does he lose
the scholarship?

Reebok/Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions

The Gibbons T of C will be held next weekend. For the
first time, some of the games will be held in Reynolds
Coliseum. Several NC State recruiting targets will be playing
this year, including Super PG Tony Robertson, WG Joe Forte,
and WF Matt Carroll. We will be posting info this week regarding
times, dates, and locations of the games.
