Life is good here. KJ has been unusually cooperative about schooling. I don't know if it's because I had
this big talk with him about how in some cultures, turning 13 means you are a man...or maybe he's just been in a good mood.
I finally admitted defeat on teaching KJ Latin myself. I signed him up for Latina Christiana II at the co-op next year,
and hired a tutor for the Summer to review the Latin he learned 3 years ago at co-op. He met with the tutor Tuesday
and Thursday and we LOVE her. She is wonderful! She's using Henle to review/teach and taught KJ more in one hour than
I had in 3 weeks. KJ's entire attitude about Latin has changed! The tutor has to be out-of-town next week, but after
that, we'll continue meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays for an hour each time. I'm going to ask her if she will keep teaching
KJ in the Fall and Spring. If she will, I'll drop Latina Christiana II. I think Henle is a better program anyway. (and I already
own it.) Our tutor is a student at Baylor University who taught Latin at the local classical school last year and will
be teaching Latin at the local Catholic school this year. She was homeschooled herself and HER mother also hired a Latin tutor
for her. I found the tutor by emailing one of the professors in the Classic's department at Baylor.
On the way to Latin yesterday, KJ asked if he could go see the new exhibit at the
museum afterwards. (Both the museum and Latin are on the Baylor campus.) So after Latin, we spent several hours there. The
"Feathered Treasures" exhibit was fascinating. This is just copied from the website.

"The Mayborn Museum Complex is pleased to announce our upcoming traveling exhibition. Feathered Treasures: Ceremonial
Objects of the Amazon will grace the Anding Traveling Exhibit Gallery from May 21 – August 20, 2006. This beautiful
and unusual exhibition comes to the Mayborn from the Houston Museum of Natural Science and features head dresses, masks, breastplates,
full-body costumes, and other items made by indigenous tribes found deep in the Amazon rain forest. These rare objects, all
of which are made of natural materials found in the forest, were used in rites of passage and other traditional ceremonies.
Materials used include brilliantly colored feathers, iridescent beetle carapaces, clay, shells, bees' wax and raw latex. This
exhibit will provide a rare glimpse into the vanishing cultures of the Amazon."

We also enjoyed visiting some old favorites. KJ has always liked the music room, animal room, and the Strecker Natural
History section. The bubble room had a new activity with a water table and boats. You moved pieces around to change the flow
of the current. KJ spent quite awhile there experimenting. While there I signed up for several
discovery boxes over the Summer and came home with "Electricity and Magnets."
When we returned home, KJ and I watched "A Conversation with Koko," over lunch. It's well worth watching if you've never
seen it. Later, we realized that KJ's new drum heads had been delivered and left on the front porch so he spent the rest of
the afternoon putting them on and drumming. All in all....a good day.

I woke up yesterday morning a tad depressed, because it was my "baby's" 13th birthday. I brightened, however thinking
about the surprise party I had planned at the local pool, and that KJ still did not know about. I ate some breakfast
and watched the morning news while running through a mental checklist of things I needed to do...cut up watermelon...partially
freeze the water bottles...run next door to borrow cooler from neighbor...pack sunscreen, towels, and camera...pick up cookie
cake...What's the weatherman saying? We've gone up to a 60% chance of rain! Oh well, it's scattered showers. They'll
pass through quickly if we get any at all. At 10:00am, it started to rain. I kept getting ready. KJ had been lead
to believe that just he and a friend were going swimming, so he wandered into the kitchen and said that he guessed we would
not be swimming afterall. I assured him that we weren't supposed to be at the pool until 1:00 and the rain would most likely
stop. I packed up the car and waited. The rain would stop for a while and then start back up. Crap, crap, crap!
I had no plan B. Okay, there are some covered pavillion areas in the park where the pool is located. I packed up some
board games thinking we could play them when it rained. There was no lightning. It's clearing off some so surely the pool
will open. Meanwhile, KJ wants to know why he can't just bring Rodney back to the house since it's not really a good
day for swimming. Did I mention that KJ also thought he was having a party the next day at the house?
We leave, pick up Rodney, pick up G'ma, pick up cookie cake...1:00...we're sitting in the car outside the deserted pool.
It is lightly sprinkling, and no one has opened the pool yet. Party guests start to arrive so I have to explain the
whole surprise pool party to KJ who says, "Oh. It's raining." We all traipse over to a covered picnic area, unload the car,
and try to light the candles. The wind keeps blowing them out. We sing "Happy Birthday," and it starts to pour. Nobody
wants to play boardgames. KJ wants everyone to come back to his house. Thank goodness for my friends! If they had not
been there, I would have probably burst into tears. Dianne and Cindy had a minivan and SUV so we loaded everyone up
to head back to here.
Here, our home, the home which has multiple projects that are not done. Yard needs mowing, garden area is partially dismantled
and weedeated, only some of the garden junk has been relocated, there are old tires (planters) and a toilet base (flower pot)
next to the driveway, empty flower pots are all over the deck waiting to be moved to the garden table which is still waiting
to be painted, clothes are on the line getting drenched, chicken coop tarp is ripped to shreds from last storm, the freshly
grated driveway is still soft and we all nearlt get stuck in it, the kitchen sink is full of dishes (since I was busy getting
ready for the party), there are clumps of cat hair on the carpet, KJ's room is a wreck, the couch slipcover needs to be washed,
I still haven't finished restuffing the other couch's cushions so there's only 1 good one, the bathroom is okay except for
the spiderwebs up by the ceiling, but we let the ceiling area spiders stay all over the house since they kill flies, speaking
of flies, the two strips of flypaper just outside the back door are full, the front porch is full of chicken feed and newspaper...arg.
I grab Emily, the cat who always wants to get outside, and toss her in my bedroom. I reach to do the same with Fuller.
She sees strangers entering the room and freaks out. She leaves two bloody gashes in my hands and disappears. Anyway...the
boys spent most of the time in the computer room watching silly little cartoons. One mom got stuck in the driveway,
but managed to back down okay. KJ was spending the night at his dad's so I got Rodney , G'ma, and KJ all delivered for
the evening, came home and collapsed.
