Mere Humans Conquering Outer
Space?

How very Absurd!

“Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array” (Genesis 2:1).

Small Does Not Describe Our Existence
A tiny drop of water contains thousands of living creatures. It takes the strongest of microscopes to see them. They have no comprehension of the world around them or above them. If it were possible for these tiny creatures to travel from their world to ours, the journey would be an eternity for them. They’re so tiny they’re unable to see our world. We’re so large we cannot see theirs without magnification. Consequently, we’re so tiny we cannot see God’s “world,” nor will we ever be able to travel to its outer fringes.

Should these microscopic creatures be told there are other creatures a million times larger than themselves who are able to hold thousands of worlds like their own and toss them into space with little effort, they would be astounded. These microscopic creatures seem so utterly insignificant that we squander whole millions of them—destroying them by the tens of thousands with the slight of the hand or with the turning of a knob to boil them into nothingness.

I wonder what one of these little animals would say if some prophet of its own kind would tell it there is a giant creature living in another dimension that could count the whole world of a drop of water as nothing, and could take up ten thousand of those worlds and scatter them without exertion? Or that this giant creature would not be encumbered if he should carry on the tip of his finger all the thousands that live in that great world of a drop of water? Or that this giant creature would have no disturbance of heart, even if the great king of one of the empires in that drop of water should gather all of his armies against him and lead them to battle? The tiny creature would reply, “But how can this be, for I cannot even grasp the idea?” We can now appreciate even more the following account:

“Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array” (Genesis 1:31).

Grasping Unfathomable Space
Vast array? Are we aware of what the term vast entails? It alludes to the immensity—the magnitude—of our universe! We’re talking about trillions and trillions of square miles, as measured by human standards. Still there is no end to our “tiny particle of existence.” We are microscopic creatures when compared to God’s titanic creation. And that is why mere humans will never “conquer space.” There are countless galaxies beyond ours. Only their Creator knows the exact count.

The Hubble telescope has glanced out into our colossal universe and discovered more than 150 billion galaxies! The vastness of God’s creation is beyond our comprehension. We on planet Earth are confined to a tiny speck in the universe, yet God loves us “tiny specks” so deeply that He set us apart from everything else and showered His grace upon us in the form of His Son.

“And these are but the outer fringe of his works” (Job 26:14).

God Is In Control!
We stand in awe of the infinite power of God as He mobilizes and activates all the stars and governs all the galaxies that sprinkle the night’s sky. I take it to be as great a wonder that He should even know that such insignificant creatures as we humans exist. And we live and enjoy His bounties in our tiny dimension or “microscopic world” because of His express decree! The heavens obey His every command. Without His oversight, there would be utter chaos among the galaxies and in the universe at large.

When compared to the vastness of God’s creation, it is truly a blessing that He even observes us! He is in the “small” as well as in the “large.” He loved us tiny creatures so much that he sacrificed the best part of heavenly glory when He sent His Son to save us from ourselves. The depth of His love and greatness is incomprehensible. Although we exist in our own “world of a drop of water,” he looks down upon us in tender mercy when we turn our faces in His direction. He’s aware of our plight. He is capable of carrying a billion worlds like ours on the tip of His finger and “tossing them to the four winds.” But no! He wants only to save us. Praise His Holy Name!

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should
not perish but have eternal life”
(John 3:16).
