BACK-TO SCHOOL TIME FOR TEN DEANS

Just last month, this relaxed family of ten spent a week at the beach.  Now they're scattered into a variety of institutions, with every one of them engaged in learning or teaching: an educated and educating family, indeed.

We've pulled them out of their vacation picture and tried to show where they've gone and what they're doing a month or so later.

--Bob and Liz are taking an NCSU class on The Korean War from self-described experts in that subject. Then, in early October, they'll be joining an tour to Washington DC for a tourist's view of almost everything thereabouts (See Social Notes, below).

--Paul will be teaching his adoring students the basics and more advanced topics in graphic design at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.  He's pictured enlightening students in  last year's Color course.   This term he's teaching two sections of a course called Letterforms . . . the basic typography class.

--Jim is managing the shop for students in North Carolina State University's College of Design.  He explains the use and the risks of very advanced fabrication equipment--and demonstrates many of these skills by developing some of his own projects.

Our most recent picture of Jim in these kind of activities is this, from his Facebook® page:

--Chloe's continuing her own studies under Dr. Cathy Crossland at NCSU.  This term she's enjoying a Practicum in Special Education. AND teaching at Conn Learning and Technology Magnet School.  She's working towards a Master's Degree in Special Education.

--Also at Conn Learning and Technology Magnet School., Nick's beginning the fifth grade with Mr. Good as his teacher.

On his very first day of school, Nick enjoyed a brief interview with Bev Purdue, Governor of North Carolina when she took the bus to Conn Elementary--her own neighborhood school.

And here's the entire interview, transcribed from our local TV Channel

Governor Purdue: "What's your favorite subject?"

Nick: "Math!"

(What else could he say, with three ex-math teacher grandparents?)

Click here to see Chloe's Facebook® video of the meeting.

--Bruce is conducting classes for young cellists--including his favorite prodigy.

--Josie's taking Anatomy & Physiology I at Colorado Mountain College--Alpine Campus--as she accumulates credits towards her nursing accreditation.  This is an Internet photo of Colorado Mountain College's Alpine Campus in Steamboat Springs.

--Anna and Smith are Second Grade and Kindergarten Montessorians, respectively, in Steamboat Springs.  They're both enjoying the Montessorian experience.  (and you can share their enthusiasm, perhaps, by clicking here.

Anna rides to Strawberry Park Elementary for her Second Grade Montessori classes.

Smith poses at the door of his Montessori Kindergarten with his friend, Christopher.

All ten of the Deans are challenged and learning and teaching.  And they're all having a very nice time.

A PIECE OF THE PAST

September 27, 1999

Ten Years Ago

THREE SUBSCRIBER HOMES ATTACKED BY FALLING TREES

Last week, several readers commented that we might be treating the winds and rains of Hurricane Floyd a little lightly.  And investigation proved that they were right!  At least three of our regular subscribers suffered from EBT (Errant Backyard Tree) Syndrome.  This week, we do our best to set the record straight.

Mary Lyman, St. Mary's Street Diva, awoke on Thursday morning to find that this huge tree had fallen against her house, breaking a window, scraping the bricks, and falling to rest against another tree--stopping just short of destroying her neighbor's fence as well.

Diva Lyman's estate was also attacked by a front-yard tree, which had been sawed up and removed prior to our reporter's visit.

Alan and Jill Goldman were attacked at their Gunnison Street residence by a huge tree which, in the early morning hours, fell into their home, stuffed branches into their bedroom closet, and nearly awakened them.  This picture was taken for insurance purposes and is on loan to The Poland Place News.

Next door to our editorial offices, the  crape myrtle featured in last week's News was trimmed up by Nancy Borngesser while Bruce and Helen McCallum were still vacationing.  Immediately on their return, however, Bruce managed to pull the trimmed-up tree upright, push the root structure back into the ground, and support the result with various neighborhood sticks and boards.  We'll be following this attempted reincarnation carefully!

The Poland Place News extends its sympathy to these, and many more, unsung victims of Hurricane Floyd

2009 Update:

While Mary Lyman's home survived (and has been sold a couple times for more than $600,000), Mary did not.  She died in 2005, and we still miss her; Jill's errant tree was removed and her back yard prospers anew; the neighboring crape myrtle is as good and as robust as ever, thanks to the McCallum family's restorative talents.

A POLAND PLACE NEWS BOOK REVIEW

Fiction

Road Dogs by Elmore Leonard (HarperCollins, New York, 2009, 265 pp.)

Elmore Leonard has written 40 books.  We've probably read at least 20 of them, because we enjoy his "tight plotting and pitch-perfect dialog."

In this one, two criminals become friends in jail, are released prematurely and become linked with the common-law wife of one of them.  On the "outside" they make new friends and, ultimately, begin to kill one another.  Doesn't sound like rewarding reading but, to us, it really is.

 SOCIAL NOTES

On June 11, thirty dedicated staff members and volunteers gathered in the Discovery Room of the N.C. State Museum of Science and, using the new observation honeybee hive as a backdrop, bestowed a large model of a Japanese Elkhorn Beetle on Liz Dean for her thirty years of dedicated service to the Museum.  Inscribed on the base:
Most children have a bug period, and I never grew out of mine.

  Edward O. Wilson, Naturalist.

The Poland Place Monthly

On August 17, a big birthday party for Liz Dean and her 1964 birthday gift, Bruce Dean, was held at the Timberlake home of Jim and Chloe Dean.  They spit on the twin-candled birthday cake in maternal and familial fashion.  .

The Poland Place Monthly

Bruce, Anna, Smith, Bruce & Grandmother Liz visited the North Carolina Zoo in Ashboro on August 19, just two days before the Steamboat Springs Deans flew home.  Nick Dean took the photos which made this composite possible.

On  a rare mid-August occasion, Grandma Liz grasped the opportunity for the annual height check.  Here she is, measuring up Smith, Anna and then Nick and putting them on the same chart that once measured her own three.

And here are the results: this year's altitudes and increments from last year:

Smith: 47" (=  +3.5")
Anna: 49.5" = ( +4")
Nick: 58" = ( +3")

Our Editor/Photographer and our Proofreader/Knitter will visit Washington twice in the next few weeks:  Seattle at the end of September for Lloyd's Celebration of Life and Art and DC in early October with an touring group.   We'll be reporting on both of these adventures in next month's issue of The Poland Place News.

MAIL TO THE EDITOR

From:  Larry Katzin
Subject: First Birthday

"The excitement from California is that Jim's and my daughter, Julia, turns 1 on August 25. A recent picture is attached."

{She's lovely.  Our continued congratulations to daddies Larry and Jim.}

The Poland Place Monthly

From:  Jim Dean
Subject: Instructions on my New Equipment

"Software (MACH) cannot shut down the power, ONLY a Fault (from the EXP control or activation of the EPO AT THE ESP) will cause the EXP to shut off power. Inside the ESP are a row of LED's to that will give you the same information. The AXIS I/O ...is the 25 pin cable between the MP3000 and the EXP power controller. Make sure that cables is not close to any plasma leads."

{Just take the loose sections of fendered smolg and gwelg them together, being careful not to overheat the browtabs. Then extract and waft them for about a time and a half.  Fwengle each one twice and swiftly dip into blinger, if handy. Otherwise, dispose of the entire instrument with twetchels. I thought your father taught you this a long time ago. }

The Poland Place Monthly

From:  Betty Reed
Subject: Great Time at the Festival

"Hi everyone! I thought I would show you what a good time I am having at STITCHES!"

{This is how the popular knitters' convention spread the word this year.  While we thought it was rather blatantly promotional, we liked the picture enough to send it on.}
