The Wolf & Rabbit FAQ
Fenrir Sureblade here. Well, I figured this might be useful for some of those questions, that I get, and frankly, it seems like some clarification is needed on a few things. Anyways, this will probably be updated, as I get more questions coming in to me, that seem to be worth it. Oh, and yes, most of these questions are straight from my e-mail box. Or at least seemed to need to be said.
1> Hey, while reading through the Space Wolf Guide, I noticed the most astonishing secret... Termies get a 5+ invulnerable save! This is astonishing to me because I did not know this, and have not been playing with this rule in mind. My question, is where/when was this decided? Perhaps I am missing some blatantly obvious statement somewhere, but I had absolutely never heard this.
Ah. Its sokay. Its not an INCREDIBLY known 'update'. Most marine players tend to make it a habit to remember this though. Anyways, if you get Codex:Chapter Approved, inside is an article that is OFFICIAL that basically gives terminators a 5+ invulnerable. So, it allows you to choose to use your 2+ save, or 5+ invulnerable. I'd suggest getting C:CA, as it will answer a lot of questions you may have on rules changes.
2> I've been having troubles with painting. I have trouble with bronzed flesh chipping on black primer so give me a hint, please. I thought white primer would work well because blood red really goes good with it same with skin colors. And also, what color of yellow is it on there shoulder pads you use. Is it Bad Moon or Sunburst? I tried Bad Moon and it looks horrible.
Actually, here... I'll just run down pretty much the basics for painting a Space wolf. Its not a GT winning painting style, but its halfway fast. When your painting the figure shadow grey, paint EVERYTHING shadow grey. Face, hair, armor. I normally assemble the main body, the legs, and head, all onto one base, and then just do something similiar to a heavy drybrushing over the whole fig. Then I just wash the joints with blackwash. Then you can drybrush SW grey over that. Now the face should be a bluish color. Just paint the whole face dwarf flesh. I don't use bronze. Dwarf is about the same. Paint that over all the 'face' parts, except hair, and metal bits. Ok. Now flesh wash it, and then drybrush with dwarf again. Now drybrush jsut a hair of elf flesh on, to bring out the highlights, and maybe some bleached bone, just ever so lightly, for your OLDER models like Long fangs.
Hrm. The paint really shouldn't chip. Make sure you hold the model by the base. I know super glue has a tendancy to stick onto fingers and the adhesive in superglue has a compound that eats plastic and paint. So that maybe your problem, if you accidently touch the face. Other than that, it should be a piece of cake. Just seal the model with a gloss coat. And maybe use just a hair of matte spray over that to dull it slightly. I've never had a mini REALLY flake on me in over MANY years of painting. The only other reason you could be getting flaking paint is your base coat is bad. Make sure your model is nicely covered in the black primer. And make sure you shake the bottle up nice and good. The Citidel Black primer isn't too bad. Its great compared to white, though.
Ah, the shoulder pads. You'll be shocked, but its Bad moon. Really. Actually, the new badmoon yellow is MUCH better than the stuff from 2nd ed. Trust me. Anyways. To get that REALLY nice yellow, you FIRST need to start the base color with a NICE white layer. I usually get a thing of white paint on my brush, and dab it onto the side of my paint wash bowl. Then I dip my brush into the water, and get some of the water, and mix it into the dab onto the side of the bowl. You should have something thats similiar to 'milk' now. Now you just paint VERY thin layers of white into the area on the shoulder pads. Do it once, and let the water evaporate on the shoulder pad, that is mixed in with the paint. In this state, its a lot like washes. They have to evaporate a bit, before you can put on the next layer. Now you need to probably put one more layer of white on, to cover the black undercoating. Now, you do the EXACT same thing with the Bad moon yellow. Its a bit slow, but WOW, you will have some yellow that LEAPS out at you. This works GREAT on Blood Red too. The reds will just be in your face! I can't recommend it enough. Yes, its slower than a servitor without a maintenanace check every 10,000 lightyears, but its worth every minute on the battle field. Like I said, its like wash. Its so thin, that the layers will build up, and give you a NICE smooooooooooth coat of paint you can be proud of. Enjoy.
3> The Wolf Guard Battle Leader:interesting point on wargear costs.... firstly, I paid full character points for him. Then I purchased Games Workshop's Interactive Army List CD-ROM where he pays Wolf Guard points where applicable (and has access to "Mark of the Wulfen"), but gets full character wargear as well. The purchasing has been like that through all the versions, so I've taken that as an official ruling, but if you've heard anything different ....
Thats a mistake. Just because a program says you can do it doesn't mean its legal. I can code up a program that says you rolled 7 or 11 every time you played a game of craps, but the simple truth is it doesn't work like that. The Roolzboyz will tell you FLAT out that what is written there was a MISTAKE. Use the full wargear price, and no MotW. Trust me, a MotW'ed WGBL is a nasty thing when armed with 2 LCs and a BoR. I know... I did this ONCE, and aftwards, called the 'boyz' on it. BUT, if that doesn't convince you, there's always this. The GT 2001 Q&A.

This should answer a LOT of questions that I haven't covered. You want proof though, there ya go. The Interactive Army List is wrong. If you want, you can STILL call the roolzboyz, and they will tell you the SAME thing. Look under the section labeled Space wolves, in the Q&A. That should be a fairly 'official' answer. And if you don't want to call it an "Error" in the Army List CD... well... call it an "Official Cheating Feature".
4> The Runic Staff - in the codices I've seen, this is described as Wargear, not a weapon.
Yes, it is described in the Space Wolf WARGEAR section. But in that same area they describe the Runic Staff, they also describe the Runic Weapon, and the Frost blade & Frost axe. And I /KNOW/ the last two are weapons.
So, how do I know a runic staff is a WEAPON? Well, simple. Look on the other side of the sheet, that says Space Wolves Armoury. Look at the Single-Handed Weapons section... Go down... Look for it... look for it! Tada! Guess what? Runic Staff (Rune Priests Only), right under that column. :) So.. its a weapon. It takes up a spot to hold it. Because you can only carry 2 one-handed weapons, OR 1 one-handed weapon and a 2 handed weapon.
5> How do you feel about Special Characters?
The simple fact is Special characters are a crutch. Yes, even the Emperor's Champion. Ragnar is a billy bad wuff, and you can add him to a unit to make it even nastier, but the truth is that Special characters must be approved by your opponent AND yourself before play starts. This goes for all those special characters. Even the Emperor's Champion. And I've, to date, never used him in a game. I'm much happier that I don't use them, well, except the EC. I really would like to use him once. Just once. At least. I mean... I did paint one up really well, but thats another story all together.
Just make your own characters using the codex, and have fun giving them personality. Thats how Fenrir Sureblade came about.
6> Why in the HELL is this place called 'The Wolf & Rabbit @ Arms'?
You know, I'm not sure. Well, for one, it sounded like an interesting name. The second reason was that it wasn't one that was might have been used by someone else. And lastly, whats the last thing you'd expect to hang out with a wolf? A rabbit. And that is why Dodger is here. Mainly because he looks a lot like a rabbit. Dodger, though, claims he's here because of the dental plan and the salad bar. Go figure.
7> How often does 'The Wolf & Rabbit' get updated?
To be truthful, its updated whenever someone gets around to it. Articles don't grow on trees. Unfortunately, that means its hard to update on a regular schedule, especially considering I don't claim to be very good at writing. Dodger also says the lack of a decent digital camera is another reason the place isn't getting updated. No camera = No pics. Hopefully we can fix that, sometime. Maybe.
8> Would Fenrir Sureblade look over my army list?
Sorry to say this, but I'm a very busy Wolf Lord. And as much as I'd like... I can't help everyone as much as I'd like. I know its sad, but this Wolf Lord has his paws full, between conquering other planets, making Dodger update this new Interface, as well as leaving time to take care of business as a Moderator at the Bolter & Chainsword. If your DESPERATE for me to look at your army list, post it to Space wolf or Army list section of the Bolter & Chainsword. Both will give you a faster response time than I myself can.
Plus, Dodger seems to think that I should actually GO out and fight a few battles, before my fighting skills start to grow old. HA! Who does that lop-eared heretic think he's talking to?
Well, in short, head towards the Bolter & Chainsword. You won't be disappointed.
