Well, it seems I’m next in line for arrest. Take a gander at this little gem:
From: Ian GoddardSubject: Anarchist Arrested 4 Speech A N A R C H I S T A R R E S T E D F O R W R O N G T H O U G H T by Ian Williams Goddard The blurb in The Washington Times (8/1/96, A10) is sketchy, but states in part: PAMPHLET LEADS TO ANARCHIST'S ARREST JONESBORO, Ga -- An 18 year-old self-styled anarchist who allegedly wrote and distributed a homemade, anti- government pamphlet has been charged with advocating the overthrow of the U.S. government. Jason Paul Moreland is being held in the Clayton County jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. Wow!, this guy and his thoughts are clearly seen as a significant threat to the planned order. While authorities obtained a warrant for his arrest last Saturday, they say they do not believe he had anything to do with the bomb that exploded at Centennial Olympic Park. It would seem that he is therefore being imprisoned for nothing more than his speech; a clear violation of First Amendment protections of free speech. Better think twice about writing that pamphlet, or questioning government to strongly, they may have to come and take you away. --> Ian Goddard <--> http://www.erols.com/igoddard/reality.html **************************************************************************** Subscribe to Freematt's Alerts: Pro-Individual Rights Issues Send a blank message to: freematt@coil.com with the words subscribe FA on the subject line. An update on this situation from 09 August, 1996:
From: leep@infinet.com (lee p.) Subject: Re: Anarchist Arrested 4 Speech here's a little more on the story: 'Anarchist' pamphleteer, 18, held in Clayton County Jail Atlanta Constitution (AC) - Wednesday, July 31, 1996 By: Bill Montgomery STAFF WRITER Section: LOCAL NEWS Page: C/7 Word Count: 326 An 18-year-old self-styled "anarchist" who allegedly peddled a free, homemade pamphlet loaded with anti-government rhetoric and a recipe for a gasoline bottle bomb is in the Clayton County Jail, charged with advocating the overthrow of the U.S. government. Clayton County police Lt. Larry Gibson said Jason Paul Moreland of Morrow turned himself in Sunday. He had been under investigation since July 8 when authorities received a copy of a pamphlet called "Rise Above." Police traced the pamphlets to a mail box service in a shopping center on Mount Zion Road allegedly rented in Moreland's name. The pamphlet was laced with with crude anti-police cartoons, obscenities, and anarchist slogans. The one overt reference to violence was an illustration of a "Molotov cocktail" on the same sheet with a recipe for "soy milk" made from water-soaked soybeans, sugar and vanilla and strained through a T-shirt. Authorities obtained an arrest warrant for Moreland Saturday after the pipe bombing at Centennial Olympic Park, though police doubt he played any role in the crime. "He told us he was only interested in destroying property, and I don't think he fully understands the ramifications," Gibson said. "Whatever he was up to, we wanted to nip it in the bud." For three months last spring, Moreland worked as a fry cook at Winstons Food and Spirits in the Mount Zion Road shopping center where he rented his mail box. Manager Gloria Shumate and co-workers said they considered Moreland "weird,", his hair dyed various colors in a punk style. Moreland and his younger brother, who also worked briefly for the restaurant, "had their own thing going, but they didn't press the issue on the rest of us," the manager added. She said the pair were fired after management found they had set up sleeping quarters on the restaurant's roof. "They had food up there, and kept their pamphlets they would pass out," waitress Kelly Dean said.
So the question is: Why wasn’t this reported on our local news instead of an apartment fire or another murder? Is our local news media so cravenly deferential to the government that they would let the story of a Georgia man being arrested for voicing his opinion go unannounced to the people of this state?
The moral of the story: Don’t watch your local news. And call the station and tell them you aren’t watching. Tell them that their biased reporting, sensationalism, and total lack of a sense of what is or is not news has forced you to get all your information from other sources.
I’ve got two words for WSB, WXIA, WAGA, and WGNX, and they aren’t "Good Job."
