A Hard Rain
A hard rain outside the
window,
a roomful of people talking, screaming
over each other;
an officer smiling, saying
"You have been charged…"
a woman’s face,
eyes wide and piercing,
looking at a little girl;
someone shouting, "It’s not fair,
they don’t deserve it,"
her voice loud, aggressive, hateful;
a young woman, arms crossed,
browbeating an older woman
who is saying, "Look at me, look at me…"
Children running in the halls, laughing.
A feeling like floating in an open space.
A large Canadian goose in flight.
The Computer Fair
Table after table of computers
sizzling like platters of large steaks
that I dream of eating.
People pass by, businessmen, one soldier,
government workers, badges around their necks.
Someone passes out yoyos that light up,
balls that make space noises, pocket calculators.
Piles of stationary cover a desktop;
the sweet smell of cologne.
