Ryan Montieth Gill
a summary of who I am...
Things I do
- Work (Go figure)
- Read books: sci-fi, fantasy, history (mostly military)
- Ride bikes
- Listening to Gothic Industrial Music (sometimes I even dance...)
- maybe at home sleeping, so don't bother me...
- Paintball
- Wargame
- Rock Climb
What I do for a living...
- I'm currently working at CNN Interactive, now owned by AOL *blech*! I've been here since 1996. I operate the second of two data centers, coordinate changes in both of the CNN.com data Centers and maintain the internal infrastructure (servers, serial feeds, documentation, etc) of CNN Interactive and sub-sites (CNNsi.com, CNNenEspanol.com, etc).
- I'm a Macintosh fanatic but recognise the need for things like Unix. Thus my second love is Unix (Solaris and Next Step being what I'm familiar with). Redmond, Wa. could fall into the sea and I'd not lament the loss of "technolgy" one bit. I don't like Bill or his ideas on computing.
CNN.com Election 2000 Capacity, mostly Sun 420Rs. Lots of traffic capacity.
My passions...(My publicly known passions at any rate)
- My Motorcycyles, I have two.
(If you want to go riding in north Georgia on a late week end give me a yell.)
- I'm a net goth on #altgothic and spend a bit of time there. (Montieth am I). I'm not very recognisable as a goth as I have no piercings or tattoos. I do wear black quite a bit. My music tastes reflect my bent.
- I enjoy many types of music, examples are:
- Brian Eno
- Classical (orchestral, eclesiastical and early music)
- Cocteau Twins
- The Cure
- Dead Can Dance
- Gentle Giant
- Keltic music of all kinds (Clannad, Enya, L. McKinnet)
- Miranda Sex Garden
- QNTAL
- Sisters of Mercy
- Steel Eye Span
- Tangerine Dream
- World music
- Yes
- J.R.R. Tolkien is my favorite author. I love the complex world of Middle Earth and Beleriand. I have spent more time re-reading his books or Christopher Tolkien's History of Middle Earth Series.
My hobbies...
- Miniature Wargaming
- Tinkering (I get this from my Grandfather T.A. "Buck" Stansberry) in the basement/garage. I do most of my own maintanence on my car and two bikes. I also do some woodworking, leatherwork, welding, and what ever comes to be needed at the time.
- Macs (the guys at Apple are my heros)
- I collect British World War II equipment. So far I don't have much. I do have a Jungle Carbine and a No4 Mk1 Rifle. Both are nice shooting battle rifles.
- Scotland; I'm part Scottish and like most things Scottish. I am of Clan Grahame of Montieth. A kilt is part of my occasional mode of dress. But I've yet to go to Scotland though...
- Japan; In 1987 I went to Kitakyushu as an exchange student. It was an awfully fun thing to do. I learned much about myself and other people. It changed my life quite a bit. I also know some Japanese from classes at Emory and in Highschool.
- Cooking, when I have time to cook for someone other than myself I will take a swing at it. I'm pretty basic but I do have a specialty or two. I can make Brussel Sprouts taste good and have a killer honey braised chicken recipie.
