Entrance is literally in an alley in the middle of the block with entrances on 17th and 18th streets. $2 security charge may apply for people under 21 except at all-ages shows.

  • Appomattox Small Boat Harbor. 1604 Fine St., Prince George. Home of the Harbor Blast concert series.

  • Ashland Coffee and Tea. 100 N. Railroad Ave., Ashland. 798-1702. Since there's no beer here, people come to actually listen to the music. Many shows require tickets purchased in advance only. We usually don't list them, but you can check out their Web site. Advance tickets are $5 less than tickets purchased the day of the show. Online tickets are not available on the day of the show.
  • Babe's. 3166 W. Cary St., 355-9330. Has a reputation as a lesbian hang-out at night, not that there's anything wrong with that. Live music on Thursdays.
  • Benny's. Used to be the Breakers in Colonial Heights.
  • Bleu Bistro. 8982 Quioccasin Rd. Used to be the Jewish Mother.
  • Bottoms Up Pizza. 1700 Dock St. 644-4400. Jazz.
  • Breakers West, 9127 W. Broad St., 270-1461, across the road from the Guitar Center and Sam Ash, where Renegade's used to be.
  • Cabo's Corner Bistro. 2053 W. Broad St. 355-1144.
  • Cafe Diem. 600 N. Sheppard St. 353-2500. The former Cafe 21 on the corner of Belmont and Patterson. Hangout for fellow musicians.
  • Camel, The. 1621 W. Broad St., across from Lowe's. 353-4901.
  • Canal Club. 1545 E. Cary St., 643-2582. Almost under the trestle. Baby Flood Zone. Be prepared to promote your own show.
  • Capital Ale House. 623 E. Main Street. 822-3072. Free parking in the deck next door.
  • Cary Street Cafe. 2631 W. Cary St., 353-7445. Deadhead Central. Bluegrass okay, too. Only the eight people in the front will actually be able to see you. Enough regulars to guarantee you some kind of audience even if you bring no one

  • Easy Street, 2401 W. Main St., 355-1198. Ungodly acoustics from tin ceiling and crowd noise, but a "meet" market. Don't play loud and add to the noise or the owner will literally pull the plug on you. Sometimes the check bounces.
  • Emilio's Tapas Bar. Corner of W. Broad and Meadow streets. 359-1224
  • Enzo's. 36 Broad St., Manakin-Sabot. Beyond Short Pump Town Center Mall, west on Rt. 250, look for the Food Lion. Enzo's is in that strip mall.
  • Fantasy Island Cafe. 9047 W. Broad St., in the shopping center with Food Lion and Rugged Warehouse. 270-4500.

  • Grandpa Eddie's Alabama Ribs & BBQ. 11129 Three Chopt Road. Live music on Friday and Saturdays from 8:30-11:30 p.m. Room holds 150.

  • Infuzion Lounge. 1401 Roseneath Road. Ice bar. You can see it from Broad Street. 249-KOOL. Sort of across the street from Joy Garden.

  • Ironhorse, 100 S. Railroad Ave., Ashland, 752-6410. A few solo acts dominate the schedule. Amy Henderson reports this is a lovely restaurant a few feet away from the railroad tracks so you can enjoy dinner and watch the trains go by. Excellent service, live music on weekends. Fine dining menu and a casual menu.
  • J&D's Cafe. Laurel Park Shopping Center, Woodman and Hungary roads.
  • Lakeside Tavern. 5406 Lakeside Avenue. 264-3799. In a strip mall, invisible. It's on the south side of the Dumbarton intersection. Regulars prefer country, owner goes back and forth trying to figure out what to book.
  • Legend Brewing Co., 321 W. 7th St., 232-8871. On the southside of the river. Really hard to find, but it's sort of near the Manchester and 14th Street bridges. Great view of the city skyline from their outside deck, but the bands play inside.
  • Livewires Restaurant and Lounge. 4108 Oaklawn Boulevard, Hopewell. 452-0533.
  • Lucky Lounge. 1421 E. Cary Street. 648-5100. This place apparently has a dress code. Make sure there is a collar on your shirt. That means no T-shirts.

  • McCormack's. 12 N. 18th St. Used to be Swingers.
  • Mojo's. 733 W. Cary Street. Where Bandito's used to be originally. 644-6676.
  • Mulligan's Southside. 11146 Hull Street Road. 744-8686.
  • National, The. Downtown on Broad, one block west of the Library of Virginia, two blocks west of City Hall.
  • O'Hare's Pub. 1795 South Creek, Powhatan. 378-8600.
  • O'Toole's. 4800 Forest Hill Ave. Sort of near the intersection with Westover Hills Blvd., east back towards downtown. Next to a theater that is now a church.Is planning future expansion.
  • Poe's Pub. 2706 E. Main St., 648-2120. If you're playing for the door, be forewarned that all the regulars get in free anyway.
  • Positive Vibe Cafe. 2825 Hathaway Rd., Stratford Square. 560-9622. A training cafe for disadvantaged workers. Open for lunch and dinner. No smoking dining room. Also has music at the Sunday brunch.
  • Pour House. 3438 Pump Road.

 

  • Richbrau's Taphouse Grill. Shockoe Slip. Used to be the Bus Stop. 644-3018.
  • Rock Falls Tavern. 2813 Hathaway Road, 272-9470. In a shopping strip off Forest Hill Avenue on the Southside.
  • Rocks. 1814 E. Main. Used to be the Sunset Grill, for you old timers, and then the Bottom Line and other stuff. The place with the tented patio.
  • Shackleford's. 10496 Ridgefield Parkway, Gleneagles Shopping Center. 741-9900.
  • Shady Grove Coffeehouse. Unitarian Universalist Community Church, 11105 Cauthorne Road, Glen Allen. 355-2461. Smoke-free.
  • Shenanigan's. 4017 MacArthur Ave., 264-5010. Northside. Very hard to find. Get a map. Page Wilson says you can park in the lot adjacent to the building but only if you pay the attendant or go into the Wine Shop and pay them.
  • Sine Irish Pub. 1327 E. Cary St. 649-7767. In the Slip.
  • Southern Railway Deli. 14th and Canal streets.
  • Sportsman. Williamsburg Road between Laburnam Avenue and Masonic Lane, behind B&B Seafood, near Miller's Lane.) It's in a strip mall. Bert Morgan says the parking lot is the size of Mechanicsville and you will not get beat up unless you act like a dick.
  • Sports Page. Rt. 60 and Winterfield Road, 14245 Midlothian Turnpike, Ivymont Shopping Center. 379-1841.

  • Toad's Place. Head south toward the canal from Sine or Morton's Steak House in Shockoe Slip. Don't park in the lot behind the building. You will be towed. No smoking room with TVs all along the walls showing what's going on on the stage, although you won't be able to see much because they're too high on the wall. $6 beers. But a really nice stage, great lighting, big room.
  • Tobacco Company. 1201 E. Cary St., 782-9555.
  • Triple, The. 3306 W. Broad St. 359-7777. A booking here is only solid if you actually get on stage. Manager sometimes takes you out and puts someone else in at the 11th hour just because she can.
  • Wabi-Sabi. 29 Bollingbrook St. Olde Town Petersburg. I think Regan and her husband run or own this place.
  • Westwood Club. 6200 West Club Lane, between Broad and Monument near St. Mary's. Mostly private events.
  • White Hawk Music Cafe. 1940 Sandy Hook Road. 556-3388.
  • Wild Willie's. 7140 Mechanicsville Turnpike. 746-0033. Used to be Joe's Inn, used to be Mio's.
