12/27/2003 - I finally realized that these
black plastic strips that had been in my Jeep box-o-stuff were actually
parts for the canopy. 1990 was the last time I had put a top on a
Jeep and forgot a lot of the details. These straps mounted to the
inside of the windshield frame with three small self tapping screws.
There is a hole at the top to hold the forward end of the steel rod that
makes the top part of the door frame around the canopy.

I also realized that
these small metal brackets (see below) in my box-o-stuff were the brackets
I needed to mount the canopy. I did not have the pins to hold the
canopy tubes to the brackets so I fashioned some pins out of some copper
tubing scrap I had thrown away earlier in the day because I would never
use it. |
|
I used a flaring tool on one
end so the pin would not pass all the way thru the bracket. I
drilled a small hole thru the other end to drop some wire thru to hold the
pin in place. |

It works! |

12/28/2003 - I unbundled the
old top that came with the Jeep and was not surprised at all that it was
in poor condition. A significant portion of the window seems have
rotted away. If I put the top on without mending the seems the wind
will blow out what is left. I'll need to leave the top off until I
can fix it or replace it. |

I am missing a retaining cup on
one of the rails that make the door frame on the top (not the door
itself). I think I can tack weld a 1/2" pipe cap in place of
the missing cup and weld a washer with a 3/8" center hole on the
other side to make a snug fit for the rail. |
