The iron/steel casting process

While the foundry that produced the Glover steam locomotives in Marietta has been silent for decades, the Glover family still runs a foundry in Cordele, Georgia, which manufactures flanges.  The process used today is not significantly different than that used to produce the Glover steam locomotives at the beginning of the 20th century.  The photos below were taken at the Cordele foundry in February 2001 (thanks to Bo Glover for acting as a tour guide!)

Molds are made in sand, using wood patterns

Metal is heated in the furnace, which reaches 2,500F degrees

Hot metal is poured into the molds

The metal cools in the molds...

And is eventually removed
