Free @ Last!
I dropped off my parents at the airport at 7 a.m. Now, I can finally do what I want, when I want, where I want! Woohoo! And, I get to sleep in my own bed! And, I can get some peace and quiet when I come home! I think they had a good time here. But, they were probably just as glad to be going home. Mom hated riding in the back seat of my car. So, that meant we couldn't do much traveling around. She could only handle short trips. So, we did nothing yesterday. I went to a movie - the Bourne Identity - which was pretty good. Dad left me some Budweisers. And, they also bought mayo and salad dressing that I'll never use.
Things That Suck - blogs that have English titles, but they're actually made by someone who types in French, or Spanish, or German. False advertising!

Is it Sunday yet??
My parents are still here. And, they're returning to Augusta tomorrow morning. So, I have just one more day to entertain them. I think we'll go check out U-Dub today, maybe drive out to Redmond, and to Snoqualmie if the weather stays clear. I thought it was going to rain. But, it has cleared up a bit.
They didn't seem too interested in the winery/brewery tour. So, maybe we'll drive up to Bainbridge Island and take the ferry back.
Never thought I'd look forward to the weekend ending.

"...One Weblog, Under God..."
What about equal time for Satanists? I think we should have left the pledge alone. In 1954, they added "under God" - but whose god were they talking about? And what about those of us who don't have any gods?
My Sprint phone is crapping out on a regular basis. I guess it's time to get my Pilot/phone soon. I've found that mime doesn't work too well over a pcs network.
Today, on the Family Values tour, we're going to Pike Place Market, and Chateau St. Michele / Red Hook brewery. Should be pretty fun. Dad pays for parking. So, that's always a good thing. He also buys the morning coffee. Also good.
Last night, we were supposed to go to Cafe Flora, but none of us were hungry. So, we ended up going to Grapes instead. Wine and cheese and fruit, soup, etc. That was our dinner. And, that was enough.

me with the parents @ the Museum of Flight
LandPhil Under Seige - Day 3
So far, so good. The parents got here Tuesday night after a long delay in Atlanta. We went straight to sleep, then had a full day of touristy stuff yesterday. (space needle, monorail, museum of flight, etc.) Today, we did the Locks cruise through the shipping canal, and around to Elliot Bay. Tonight, I'm dragging them to a vegetarian restaurant. I'm proud of them for being open to that. They even drank some espresso drinks yesterday. But, they're still pretty set in their ways. For instance, Dad wanted Budweiser instead of the hundreds of microbrews available to him.
Tomorrow, we'll probably tour the winery and Red Hook brewery.
Soon, it will be Sunday.

P-Day.
My parents arrive tonight. I haven't finished cleaning the house. And, I have a million things to do before they arrive. Oh well. I'm surprisingly calm about this. They usually drive me crazy within 24 hours. But, maybe things will be better with them on my turf. Wish me luck.
Tomorrow, we'll do the space needle, monorail, Ballard, Fremont, maybe Pike Place market. The next day, we're doing the Locks cruise, and maybe the brewery and winery.

Green Power
Does your city have a Green Power program? I don't think our government does enough to utilize renewable energy like solar and wind power. But, Seattle is attempting to change that. Seattle City Light customers can kick in an extra 3 7 or $10 to their bill each month. That money will be invested in alternative energy programs. I'm in for $3/month. But, I'll jack it up when I start making some more money. Find out if your city does something similar. And, if they don't.. ask them why not!?

Extremo the clown (.com) lip syncs with his little friend
Fremont Solstice Parade
This weekend is the Fremont Fair. I went to the parade yesterday, and met up with Bill, Neil, Dave, Amri, Heather, and Shara. Hot day. Got a sunburn.. needed shorts.. and sunscreen. Dropped Malia off at the airport at 11 a.m. (returned favor, I owe her many times I over) and planned to go home to get my bike and the shorts. But, time was short, traffic was bad; so, I parked near Gasworks and rollerbladed into Fremont. Without pads. Luckily, I didn't bust ass.
My dog came back. The runaway border collie named "Bradley" showed up in my neighborhood again yesterday. I might keep him this time. His stupid owner doesn't give a shit about him, apparently. He has a collar this time (choke chain); but still no tags. We played frisbee last night and this morning. He never barks. (like Sparky next door) But, he whimpers a lot. He's lonely, I guess.
Today, I'm cleaning the house.. and mowing the grass. It's cloudy and cool. Parents arrive in 2 days. Hopefully, I'll be ready. And, hopefully, it will be over quickly!

Where's George?
In some change, I received a $5 bill stamped with "Where's George" on it. How strange. I guess it should say "where's Abe?"

Do I have to post something new every day?
Does anybody even read this?
Should I quit updating it?
Will I win $16 million in tonight's Lotto?
Am I wasting money by buying a ticket?
Will I ever own a DVD player?
Will VHS disappear, like Beta did?
Where should I go for coffee this morning?
Will Laura return my call?
When will I get a date?
Do I have any overdue books?
How am I going to recycle the box my bed frame came in?
Should I cut the grass today?
Will I get the front door painted by next week?
Who will be at Mark & Jen's wedding?
Where will I find curtains for my bedroom?
Is this the last question?
And, if it isn't... what will be the last question?
Is it this one?

I'm back from L.A. And, I'm posting my pictures. I had a blast. I don't know when I'll get back down there. So, I'm glad I was able to go while I could.
These travels are always filled with highs and lows. But, thankfully the highs almost always outweigh the lows. Thanks a million to Traci and Jim, Kimberly and Tom, for hanging out with me!

Tom & Kimberly - Universal Studios CityWalk
The Kilborn taping was pretty fun last night. The interviews weren't so great. But, "Guided By Voices" played.. and they sounded good. My hands are raw from clapping for 2 hours.
Today, I'm meeting up with Traci at Warner Brothers. And, I hope to get a tour of the studio. I head back to Seattle tonight. I've had fun, but it will be good to get home.
I have lots to do before the parents arrive on the 25th!

Postcard from L.A.
Having a great time. I went rollerblading with Traci when I got here on Saturday. We hung out at the beach for a few hours. Then, we went to a movie that night. ("Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys") I'm going to the Kilborn show tonight. Yesterday, we went to the Getty Museum. And tomorrow, I'm taking the Warner Brothers tour, then meeting Traci for lunch on the lot. Pictures will be uploaded soon.

Sunset in Seattle - Ballard Bridge
My new bed finally arrives today. Of course, the mattresses won't get here till tomorrow though. So, I'll have one more night on the little guest bed.
I'm going to L.A. this weekend. Haven't been in years.. but, i found a cheap ticket. So, I jumped on it. Saturday thru Tuesday. should be fun. I'll get to rollerblade on the strand; check out the l.a. apple store, blah blah blah..
It's another perfect day, weather wise. This is why I live in Seattle. Summer here is amazing.

6.12.2002

Apple has a new ad campaign. Even the mattress store where I bought my new stuff yesterday, has 3 iMacs running things: 2 old ones, and 1 of the cool, new designs.
Yes. I finally have a new bed. They're delivering it tomorrow. Can't wait to move back into the other room. Now, if I could just find some curtains.. and get rid of the futon in my garage.
The weather here is amazing. It's a crime to stay inside.
Yesterday, I tried to go to a SIFF movie. But, it was sold out. I guess I'll try for something on Thursday.. or maybe just buy tickets for next week. It sucks that it's so hard to get to see these things. Makes me want to stay home and rent DVDs.

Solar Eclipse
Next-door neighbor, Tyler, reminded me that there was a solar eclipse going on yesterday. He had brought out his welding shield so he could look at it. He passed it over the fence so I could take a look. I just took a quick glance. Pretty cool.. but, anticlimactic.

Dog Owner For A Day
I spotted the border collie running down the street towards Holman Rd... and I thought it was my next door neighbor, Sparky. So, as I was backing out of the driveway, I opened my door and called him over. Since he didn't bark his head off, I knew it couldn't be Sparky. But, I put him in the back seat and drove him over to my neighbor's driveway, just in case. Heather came outside, Sparky at her heels. So, it couldn't have been him. But, Heather didn't know where he belonged either. After a couple of hours of canvasing the neighborhood, I finally learned that Bradley belonged to somebody a few blocks away. The cute girl at the pet food store recognized him as belonging to her irresponsible neighbor. So, I left a note on the guy's door.. and took the dog back to my house to play frisbee. The neighbor didn't call until 2am. So, Bradley got to spend the night. Jeff, the owner, came to pick him up this morning. Can't wait to get my own dog. If the stupid owner hadn't called me, I would have just kept him. Bradley and I had a great time, while it lasted. It was fun to be a dog owner for a day.

Jackpot!
I won 3 bucks in the Saturday Lotto. I'm not a big lotto player. But, when it's over $13 million, I can't resist. So, now I get 3 more chances at the big prize!
I watched "Girl Interrupted" last night. What a fucking depressing movie. Winona was great though. For all those movies where I thought she was stiff, plain, and shallow,... she makes up for it in this one. God, she's beautiful. I might just have to put her back on my top 5 list.
I finally realized how lame it is to rent movies and watch them at home. It just does not compare to seeing it in the theatre. You lose so much by watching it on a tiny screen; ...by stopping and restarting every time the phone rings, or you have to pee, or you need a snack. DVDs are great, of course - you get the wide screen version, and the bonus commentary, deleted scenes, etc. But, you miss out on so much that the theatre experience provides.
I still don't have a bed. This is whack. It's like I live in my one bedroom apartment again. I don't even go in that room anymore. Must buy bed today.

Cat-Sitting
Even her cats are high-maintenance. She scrubs out their water dishes with soap and water every day, making sure she gets rid of all soapy residue. Then, she refills their dishes with Brita filtered water from the fridge.

Did you catch me on the MTV Movie Awards last night? It was pretty exciting, as you can see. Other than the moment above, another highlight was the White Stripes performance. If you don't have this CD yet, get it. Your ears will thank you.
I didn't sell a GD thing at the art walk last night. And there was a huge crowd. I guess they just didn't like my stuff. Maybe I'll try selling photos next time. My emulsion transfers sold better at the Nothing New gallery too. I think I'll take next month off and come back again with all new work. By then I'll have a dog. So, I'll have somebody to keep me company down there too. About an hour into the art walk, a little Chinese man and his son wanted to squeeze in between me and the artist next to me. I said ok, and we all pushed aside a couple of feet. At the end of the art walk, they gave me a 2002 NY Mets calendar. Well,... I didn't want to seem rude. I'll recycle it for them.
Tonight, I'm getting instructions on "how to feed Shara's cats while she's out of town." Then, I have a SW project in the morning. I was invited to go out to the peninsula with a bunch of people. Bill rented a cabin. But, I have too much to do here. Still need to buy a bed, for one!

Read This!...
I'm currently reading Michael Moore's "Stupid White Men." And, I highly recommend it. It's in its 14th printing. And, it was a best seller for 4 weeks in a row. Check it out!
Tonight is the Pioneer Square "1st Thursday" gallery walk. I'll be down there selling my art. Hopefully, it will go better this month. Last month, it was windy and cold. And, I didn't sell a thing. Stop by if you're in the area!

QFC Scam
QFC grocery store just started this new thing where you have to sign up for an "Advantage Savings" card in order to get a decent price on groceries. Basically, this was just an excuse for them to raise their prices. Then, they claim you're "saving" a bunch of money because you're one of the special few who have the Savings card. The checkout boy even circles the amount on your receipt after every transaction. I bought 10 things yesterday and saved a whole dime. Gee, thanks.
They also use the card to track what you buy. Like Big Brother, looking over your shoulder as you try to decide between Brawny paper towels or the generic kind.
Safeway has the same scam working. But, they've been doing it for longer. I'd go to Fred Meyer. But, it's a good bit further away. And, they'll probably have a card soon too.
Why can't grocery stores design the layout of their aisles consistently? It seems like that should be standard. Put bread on the first aisle, next to the produce. Then, you'll always know where to find it. Every grocery store is different. Even in the same chain, every QFC (for example) is different. You'd think they would want to make it easier for their customers to shop there.

911 Is A Joke
I arrived at the Ballard Family Center at 5pm. I sat down to proofread the bi-monthly newsletter, and shoot the breeze with Kristin. After about 5 minutes, we both remembered that I was there to take some photos of some of the ESL students. Kristin introduced me to the instructor, and I invited the three students outside where the light would be better for our pictures.
As we were walking outside, a man who had been sitting in the lobby stood up and confronted me. He was obviously quite intoxicated. And, he still had a plastic cup in his hand - a sip of dark liquid sloshing about. I had seen lots of drunks like this one in Ballard before. Usually they leave you alone. Occasionally, they'll ask for change. But, for the most part, they're annoying but harmless. This one was different. He was about my height, about 10 years older, I'd guess. And he was very pissed off at me for carrying a camera. Maybe he was just looking for an excuse to pick a fight. Maybe he thought I was going to try to take his picture. So, he starts into me - mumbling something about taking a picture, "..that damn camera,.." etc. I backed up, continued outside, hoping he would walk away. Usually, if you continue with what you're doing, these idiots will forget what they were riled up about, and move on. But, this guy kept at me. He ignored the three other people with me. Kristin, and the Ballard Family Center director noticed the commotion and followed us out to observe things. The guy then starts taking a fight stance, and keeps coming toward me, fists raised. I held up a hand to keep some distance between us, and kept moving slowly backwards. Pretty soon, he had me pinned between a bus bench and the electrical box for a traffic signal. I was a little speechless. Not scared, really. I just didn't quite know what to say to calm him down. So, I hopped backwards over the bench and kept backing up. More blather ".. that camera.. blah blah.. you're not going to take a picture,.. I'll hit you,... blah blah blah", etc. It did no good to reason with the guy. I knew he probably couldn't hurt me. He was pretty hammered. I'm not the fighting type. But, I figure I could have taken him, if it came to it. Some other people in the street noticed what was going on and tried to distract him, find out what was going on, ask him questions to calm him down. But, it didn't work. So, I decided to just disappear for a while to see if the drunk would go away. As I walked across the street, he re-entered the BFC. Robin, the director, promptly told him to leave, while Kristin called the police. I stepped into the Italian restaurant on the other side of Ballard Avenue to wait and observe. I wasn't worried about what he might do anyone at BFC. He seemed intent only on hurting me, for some reason. As I watched and waited, he left the BFC, and staggered down the sidewalk a little; stopping to karate chop the air a few times, mumble some things to passersby, and ponder where he might get his next drink.
A small crowd began to gather at the windows of the other businesses on Ballard Avenue. Several of the onlookers also called the police, I learned later. While I waited in the restaurant, I asked to borrow the phone to call the police. "Do you know the number?" the bartender asked me. Uh, yeah - 911. I would have called from my cell phone, but I left it over at the Center. I would have called the center to see if they were already calling the police. But, my Pilot was also left behind, across the street. The Italian owner of the restaurant came out to see what was going on. He said he would walk me back over to the BFC. He didn't realize that I wasn't looking for a bodyguard. I was trying to difuse the situation by waiting a little while for the guy to leave; and I still wanted to take some pictures outside, without being hassled.
The police never came. After the guy wandered further down the street, I returned to the BFC to finish taking the pictures - INside, this time. Someone from the police department called Kristin to say that they were too busy to come out, and somebody would stop by to file a report in the morning. I wonder if they would have come quicker if the guy had made me bleed?

BlogHop
This Blog thing is really addicting. Check out bloghop for some interesting blogs. And here's a link to Kenny's blog. We used to be friends once.
Things that suck: cleaning your kitchen after a barbecue/cookout/party.
I'll be getting a dog soon. Maybe next month. And, I need some ideas for names. Anybody have any suggestions? I'd like to name it/him/her after an artist. My only idea, so far, is to name it after Lichtenstein, or "Lich" [lick] for short.

Last night I dreamed that it snowed in Seattle. It has been cold every morning.. but not cold enough to snow of course. We're actually just getting our first summer-like weather here. But, they always say that Seattle's summer starts around July 4th.
Ingredients for a great weekend:
good friends
good weather
good food
beer and croquet
Not your ordinary croquet though. This was extreme croquet. Full-contact croquet. With a frisbee flying through the course at all times. Other obstacles in my backyard included a tire, a newspaper box, sink holes, a broken swing, and, uh... Mike.

Busy Weekend
I get more and more behind each day. I thought the weekends were for catching up, and/or resting. I haven't done either of those. So, today.. I have to attempt to clean the house. If it gets sunny and a little warmer (like yesterday), I'll have some people over for a cookout. Otherwise.. it will have to wait, once again. I've been meaning to do a barbecue for a long time. But, my timing is always bad.
Why am I sitting here typing? I've got stuff to do!
New additions have been added to the Mirror Project.
