Unemployment is Strange
I am still adjusting. I am still experiencing a weird mix of reactions from people because of my new status. Many still think this is a bad thing that I was laid off. They say "how's it going?" with sadness and pity in their voices. They ask "any job leads?" as though I would go back to working for tha man. When I refuse an invitation to go out to dinner or join friends for drinks (which I still do, but not as often as I used to), they offer to pay. But, I'm not a charity case. I don't want people to pay my way for things now. I'd rather work my way back up; save money by not going out as often; then rejoin the people who can afford such things when I'm back on my feet.

I still haven't gotten my severance check, even though I sent my computer back a week ago. They should have everything they need from me now. So, I'm wondering where my cash is.

I don't have any health insurance right now. So, I'm hoping to stay healthy for a while. And, I'm avoiding risky activities like rollerblading or lion wrestling. [Though I still drive my car pretty regularly.. and that's more dangerous than inhaling lead paint.]

iWon - iWon Today - Auto Tip
HEY.. Drive an electric car! I've always said that my next car will be a hybrid. Toyota and Honda both make hybrid models. And, they look pretty cool. It's amazing that it has taken us this long to come up with something better than the old internal combustion engine.

Invention idea
Somebody needs to create a reverse dictionary. I'm trying to remember the name for this. What's it called when you take a sentence and scramble the letters up to make another sentence?? This is driving me crazy.

Epson Sucks
I have an Epson inkjet printer that is in perfect working order. It's a few years old. But, it still works just like it should. Now that I have a new Powerbook, I have to update my printer driver. But, when I tried to find a current driver for it on the Epson web site, I came up empty! WTF am I supposed to do now? Throw it away and buy another printer? This one works just fine. But, the geniuses at Epson can't be bothered with updating the driver for OSX because it's an older model.

So, not only can I not use the printer that I have.. I also can't print anything from the web- like my update form for OS 10.2, my state tax info, etc.

Did I mention yet how much I love my new Powerbook? This thing rocks. Mac Mall screwed me on the operating system though. It should have been loaded with the most current OS, Jaguar. But, it only came with OS 10.1. I'm hoping they'll save their butts and mail me the upgrade CD.

This machine is really amazing. Easy to use; elegant interface; kick ass display and graphics; bigger screen than my old powerbook. I love new stuff. The newer new Powerbooks are coming out soon! My machine will already by outdated in a few weeks. But, that's okay. The machine I had been working with was three years old.

I went to Oktoberfest today. Why do they have Oktoberfest in September?? They had the Texas chainsaw pumpkin carving contest, as usual. It wasn't as good this year, for some reason. But, I got some better photos. Met Mia and Neil there.. didn't stay long. I still have tons of work to do this weekend. Wonder if I'll get to it all. My zip drive isn't working right for some reason. So, I'm having trouble copying over some of my old backed up files.

Atlanta: Graffiti Capital of the World
When I visited Atlanta last week, I was amazed to see how much graffiti there was. It was always bad, I guess. But, now it just seems to grow like kudzu on anything that will hold still long enough to get sprayed. The worst areas are midtown, east Atlanta, Kirkwood, and Little 5 Points. I bet if it were happening in Buckhead, somebody would do something about it. Why does the mayor seem to think this is okay? Some street signs are unreadable because they're so covered in spray paint. If you'd like to express your opinion to the mayor about this, her address is: sfranklin@ci.atlanta.ga.us

SOME Fkn Nerve!
My former manager now expects ME to expense the cost of shipping back my computer to the company. WTF!? I would get reimbursed. But, there's no way I'm shelling out a free loan for them. It was hard enough getting paid back for things when I worked there. What an idiot. He can either send me the cash first or give me a shipping number to use. It's amazing how they still want to take advantage of me after they kicked me to the curb.

First Monday
Today is my first Monday of unemployment. Or should I say.. self-employment. I didn't set an alarm this morning. That was kind of nice. And, I am using up the last few punches on my Tully's card. No more morning mochas for me. There are a million things to do. I don't quite know where to begin. I have files to organize, books to read, phone numbers to call, leads to follow, illustrations to make, resumes to update, yadda yadda yadda. Guess I'll just dive in.

Halloween
The closer it gets, the further away it seems. I bought a cooler today. I'm going to build a chiller for my fog machine. This will be the last prop thing I make this year. Next year will be a little bigger, I think.

Tomorrow
Tomorrow night, Shara put together a bowling outing for me and the SW team. We're meeting at Sunset at 8. Should be fun. But, I'll be the guy drinking water. (Unless my friends love me, and they buy me lots of beers.)

Muck Fanheim
I got laid off on Tuesday. Just a quick phone call. And, my "position has been eliminated." Like so many of my friends before me.

What to do now? I hope to become a fulltime illustrator now. It's what I'd rather do anyway. But, it sucks not knowing where your next meal is coming from. Or if you'll be able to pay your mortgage, or fly home for Christmas..., etc.

I'm looking forward to it though. Should be fun.

Today, my sister is having a baby. I'll become a 5-time uncle. We're not sure if it's a boy or a girl. But, I already have 2 nieces and 2 nephews. So, this one's just a bonus.

Tomorrow is the anniversary of 9-11. I'm going to try to avoid watching news or TV. I'm hoping to avoid re-living it all. It's too depressing.

I saw One Hour Photo the other night. Good flick. It's nice when actors play roles that are the opposite of how you're used to seeing them. Robin Williams makes a good creepy guy. I never saw Insomnia, but I guess it's the same situation with that one.

9/11
We haven't even hit the 1st anniversary of September 11th, but already we're getting bombarded with replays and retrospectives about this tragedy. Well I, for one, am sick of it. I don't want to be reminded of what happened that day. I don't want to be suicidally depressed again. I don't want to watch those buildings crumble again. I don't want to see people diving out of the towers, dead firefighters, flags at half mast, smoldering fires, crying relatives, photo walls or piles of flowers. And I sure as hell don't want to hear about the fighting over what the memorial should look like. I'm sick of it! Give it a rest!
