someone sent this to me today. This was a joke, obviously. But, it's what Natalie probably would want to say if she didn't have to be apolitical. We must not anger the fans or the record label, now!
"You've probably heard that after criticizing Bush, Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks apologized the next day. The so called "apology" was highly edited. Take a minute and read what she really said; then pass it on to everyone you know.
Apology from Natalie Maines
As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I now realize that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect.
I hope everyone understands, I'm just a young girl who grew up in Texas. As far back as I can remember, I heard people say they were ashamed of President Clinton. I saw bumper stickers calling him everything from a pothead to a murderer. I heard people on the radio and tv like Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson, Newt Gingrich and Trent Lott bad mouthing the President and ridiculing his wife and daughter at every opportunity.
I heard LOTS of people disrespecting the President. So I guess I just assumed it was acceptable behavior.
But now, thanks to the thousands of angry people who want radio stations to boycott our music because criticizing the President is unpatriotic, I realize it's wrong to have a liberal opinion if you're a country music artist. I guess I should have thought about that before deciding to play music that attracts hypocritical red necks.
I also realize now that I'm supposed to just sing and look cute so our fans won't have anything to upset them while they're cheating on their wives or getting in drunken bar fights or driving around in their pickup trucks shooting highway signs and small animals.
And most important of all, I realize that it's wrong for a celebrity to voice a political opinion, unless they're Charlie Daniels, Clint Black, Merle Haggard, Barbara Mandrell, Loretta Lynn, Ricky Skaggs, Travis Tritt, Hank Williams Jr, Amy Grant, Larry Gatlin, Crystal Gayle, Reba McEntire, Lee Greenwood, Lorrie Morgan, Anita Bryant, Mike Oldfield, Ted Nugent, Wayne Newton, Dick Clark, Jay Leno, Drew Carey, Dixie Carter, Victoria Jackson, Charleton Heston, Fred Thompson, Ben Stein, Bruce Willis, Kevin Costner, Arnold Schwartzenegger, Bo Derek, Rick Schroeder, George Will, Pat Buchanan, Bill O'Reilly, Joe Rogan, Delta Burke, Robert Conrad or Jesse Ventura.
God Bless America,
Natalie
This "Chick" deserves our vocal support.

Charlotte's Top 15 Drunk Drivers.
When I graduated from college, my best friend and roommate's parents were killed by a drunk driver. When I lived in Atlanta, my landlord regularly drove himself home drunk out of his mind. (He lived in the apartment next door.) They should publish a regular article like this in every newspaper.

More stupid legislation!
Makes me glad I don't live in Georgia anymore. Rep. John Noel (D-Atlanta) and four co-sponsors filed a bill Tuesday that would make it a misdemeanor "of a high and aggravated nature" not to offer sweet tea in any restaurant that serves iced tea.

Boycott Europeum software!
They sold me some software that didn't work. I told them I wanted a refund. And they refused. Although I prepaid for a software license, I did not use what I downloaded. [and, for the record, I wouldn't even know what to do with it. The only programming language I know is HTML] I asked for a refund several times. And, they still refused.
Do NOT buy from Europeum.net or you could get screwed too!

Oscar
Steve Martin did a another excellent job of hosting the Oscars last night. I won the prediction contest... with 4 correct votes out of the 7 we wagered on.
Michael Moore won an Oscar last night for his excellent documentary, 'Bowling for Columbine.' [He also won the Independent Spirit Award the night before.] He was given a standing ovation as he approached the stage. And, then he was given a mixture of (mostly) jeers and some cheers as he gave an anti-war speech. I don't get it. He made some great points. And, the audience cheered him at first. Why the sudden switch?? Here's his speech.
I couldn't sleep last night / this morning. So, I got out of bed at 5:15am. That fuckin' Dixie Chicks cover of "Landslide" is playing in my head,.. and I can't get it out. Stevie Nicks recorded the first version, I think. But, I much prefer the Smashing Pumpkins rendition. I have no idea why the Chicks are playing in my head. I guess I hear that one on the radio all the time. (as I'm quickly scanning for a different station.)
I finished a new web site yesterday. Check out Peeramid.com. My friend Carolyn, who I met on a studies abroad trip to Italy way back in 1987, is the inventor/owner of Peeramid products.

it happened again
I went to another meeting on Thursday. This time it was for a group of Seattle telecommuters. It was from 5-7. I got to the restaurant at 5:15. I saw no groups that looked like they were who I was supposed to meet with. I saw no signs directing me to the right table. I then asked the host if he knew where our group was meeting. He didn't. He then checked the reservation book. Nothing. So, I sat at the bar and waited. Maybe they weren't there yet, I thought. It turns out that there were only 2 people. I found this out the next day. They were sitting a short distance from where I was. I sat at the bar for 45 minutes, watching the door; waiting.
I quit.
Shock and Awe
I don't know how to feel about this war. My mood changes from minute to minute. I'm glad that the guy will be taken out of power. But, I hate Bush for doing this without the UN's green light.
Missed opportunities
I've been watching a couple of stocks for a few months now. One that I sold a while back. And another that I wanted to buy. Starbucks. It was at 20.. or 21 when I started watching it. It would go up and down. I waited. Now, it's sitting at around 26, I think. Should've jumped in, dammit.
Pixar. Another great company. But, I sold too soon. I got out around 40. Now it's at 56. Unreal! They haven't had a movie out in years. When they DO release a movie, it never goes above 40! Now - 56! wtf??

blog meetup.
I went to the blog meetup last night. I got to Elliott Bay Book Company about an hour early. I browsed around for a bit. Then, I went downstairs to read. I got a cup of coffee, placed myself near the base of the stairs, and put up a "blogger meetup" sign that I had printed out.
I watched for familiar faces. (I knew only a few) But, I didn't see any. I looked around the cafe. But, I didn't see any big groups forming. Nobody approached me after seeing my sign. So, at about 7:30, I finallly just left.
I don't think I'll go to another one. These things are so poorly organized. The last one I went to (the graphic design meetup) had 2 people. Me and one other guy. There were supposed to be TEN!

Damn. You blinked.
I found another stray today. This time, it's a golden retriever mix. Another stupid owner: no i.d. tag; no rabies tag. The poor thing was left in its front yard on this cold, wet day. It easily jumped the short fence... and wound up on my street. I spotted her running around by herself and called her over. (no easy task) She ate a little of my sandwich. And, I was able to coax her into the (fenced) backyard.
I took her picture, and showed it to the vet's office near my house. They didn't recognize her. But, they suggested I bring her in so they could scan her for a microchip. This worked. After a few calls, we finally found a name, address, and phone number.
I called the stupid owner and told her I found a dog with NO TAGs wandering around my street. She acted very nonchalant, as though it happens often. Why do people leave their pets outside if they're just going to escape from their yard every time? And, if they know they're going to get loose, why don't they put tags on them so they can be returned??
"Madeline" is lying on the floor next to me as I type this. Her owner is coming to pick her up in about an hour. Caren, the woman that owns the dog, lives around the corner from me. I plan to chew her out some more when she comes to pick her up. She called me back after my initial call to ask me not to feed her. (too late) She didn't want Madeline coming back to my house if she got loose again. The dog was starving when I found her. I fed her 2 bowls of (probably stale) dog food that I had bought last summer.
Just this morning, I had been thinking to myself: I haven't met, seen, or touched a dawg in a long time. I still want to adopt one of my own. But, I can't afford it. It's sad that the people who do have pets don't even take care of the ones they have. I think I'm a better dog owner than some of the dog owners in my neighborhood.

Dave.
Dave Letterman has the shingles. So, he has had a few guest hosts over the last few weeks. The first week was really rough. Bruce Willis. John McEnroe. These people should never try to read a monologue. This week has been much better: Whoopi Goldberg - a pro. Vince Vaughn - a great actor.. and a guy who should have his own talk show. Elvis Costello - guest host/musical guest. You wouldn't think he could pull it off. But, he was actually quite funny. And, tonight - it's Will Farrell. Can't wait to see that one.
Hopefully, Dave will be all better next week.
Amber.
Since Elizabeth Smart was found the other day, there has been a lot of talk about a National Amber Alert program. This is the system that allows law enforcement to communicate with the media to quickly notify people about children who have been abducted. I think it's a great idea. We already have one in Washington. But, a national program will be even better. Please write your Representatives and tell them what you think! You can also write to Dubya: president@whitehouse.gov

I posted a new painting on my site today. It's a commission for my friend Quincy. She wanted a painting of her 2 dogs: Chloe, the Weimeraner. And Lulu the something or other. Q couldn't wait to see how it turned out, so I sent her a digital picture in advance. I'll be putting the painting in the mail to her this weekend.
People seem to like my Pop Dogs. I'm doing one with cats as a housewarming present for someone. They have 3 cats; And, I have 4 spots for their portraits. So, I'll either do one twice, or make them all look somewhat alike. (They're all your basic black cats.)

I bought some girl scout cookies the other day. Thin Mints. My favorite kind. I also like those peanut butter ones; and the chocolate / coconut thingamajigs. Whatever they're called. I'm not a big coconut fan. But, damn those are good! The 'serving size' printed on the side of the box says "4 cookies." Four? I could eat half the box in one sitting.
It has been cold and rainy here the last few days. And, it's going to do the same all week. That, coupled with my cold, helps me save money on coffee trips. I haven't been to Tully's in a week or so. I just don't feel up to doing anything at all. I've been sleeping on the couch and popping Advil all day.

fucking cold.
I have a fucking cold. And, i am fucking cold. my house is fucking cold. even with the fireplace on. fuck.
cutbacks.
i've trimmed my budget in every way i can stand to do so. now, it's time for the stuff that hurts. that's right. i need to cancel my cable. i hate to give it up. so much good brain mush on mtv. some excellent stuff on Bravo. but, when i get back on top again, i can get my cable back. it's either- give up the cable - or keep going along without health insurance. and that just fucking scares me.
i also should move my website. hosting costs me $20/month. But, i've seen places that charge less. earthlink is too expensive.
i feel so unmotivated when i have a cold. I'm getting some painting done. things are fine there. But, i feel like sitting on the couch; or sleeping all day. i don't feel like doing any work work. i have some web sites to work on. but, .. not being able to breathe, and having a splitting headache make that very difficult.
there are an assload of meetups this week. The graphic design one was last night. 8 people said they'd come. 2 of us showed up. The directions to the place were bad; there was no address on the building; and the name of the place was wrong.
tonight was the bookcrossing meetup. But, i skipped it. it's way over in West seattle, and i haven't read anything in a while. so, i had nothing to talk about. tomorrow is the vegetarian meetup and the photography meetup. (held at the same place, 1 hour apart. very convenient.) but, i don't know if i'll make it to those. thursday is the Pub Mixer. i'd really like to go to that. (it's at Fado irish pub this month, in honor of St. Pat's day, coming soon.)
I have a volunteer project on Saturday. if i'm feeling worse than today, I'll probably skip it. we'll be sorting food donations in a cold-ass warehouse for Northwest Harvest.
I bought some more wine for my May art show tonight. $3 bucks a bottle for this red wine from Argentina! I actually drank some a few nights ago. and it was good. I was worried it would taste like hell.. but, i think it checked out fine.
I'm living below the poverty line. with unemployment money alone, I make like 22,000 / yr. holy shit. how do people do this? I can't wait till i'm making decent money again. it will be so nice to afford luxeries like beer again. or go to movies.
must get a kleenex....

typos irk me. I'm not talkin' about the occasional misspelt wordd on a little personal page. so what if there's an errorr in a blog, or on the cat appreciation society page. I'm talking about the big professional sites. Case in point: megamillions.com - Their page says "Now you to can have all the..." - It's an honest mistake. to, too, two. A spell check doesn't catch stuff like this. But, a big company like this should have proofreaders right? And surely I'm not the only person to notice it. It's been spelled that way for at least 6 months.. possibly longer. So, wtf?

The 2nd night of the art show went fairly well. I didn't sell anything. And, the crowd was lighter on Friday than it was on Thursday. But, I still had a pretty good time. A bunch of friends came out to hang out with me. After an hour or so, we left and went for drinks at a place across the street.

The art show went pretty well last night. Well, one of them did anyway. The mimic-octopus show was disappointing. A tiny, hard-to-find space. Only about 4 people there when I arrived. And, I didn't stay long. The show at Northwest Work Lofts went great though. Big turnout. 57 artists. 150 pieces of art. Lots of wine. A few friends showed up to support us. All in all, a good night. Tonight should be even better. If you missed it then, you get another chance. Tonight from 7pm to midnight; If you live in Seattle, come check it out!

Smoke Out, Some arguments for and against a proposed ban on smoking in bars and clubs in Washington State, by (03/06/03)
There's an interesting debate going on about the proposed smoking ban in Washington bars. You can guess which side I'm on. Opponents of the initiative say that "bars are where you go to do unhealthy things." I disagree. I go to bars to meet up with friends and have a good time. Not to slowly kill myself. If you want to fire one up, take your ass outside. Homicide is still illegal. And, smokers are not only killing themselves.. but all the waiters and bartenders in all the bars where smoking is allowed. "Work somewhere else!", they say. But, shouldn't they have the right to work where they can find work? And shouldn't a (non-smoking) tavern owner get to operate his establishment with clear air?
I hope this thing passes. The same type of thing was put into effect in California. And, despite all the concern, it hasn't adversely affected sales/attendance at California restaurants and pubs. [But, I bet it has done some damage to the sidewalks in front of these places. I can just imagine the increase in litter and butts all over the place.]

Art Shows Added
I got some new shows and a few leads yesterday. I had stopped by the Bath House at Alki to ask about their artist program. [They supply all the art for the Tully's cafe across the street from them.] Unfortunately, you have to be a "Bath House" artist to participate. However!.. they do have a guest artist wall at the bath house. I'm going to be their artist for June. That's also when their art festival takes place. So, it will mean lots of traffic.
I also lined up a show at the Alki Starbucks. Mark your calendars now: March 2004!
And finally, I got a couple of leads on some other shows there in West Seattle. The Alki Cafe has a great big space. And, so I need to call their contact soon.
Don't Forget!
This thursday and friday, I have 2 art shows: Kaleidoscope Gallery, on Yesler.. Pioneer Square (Seattle). 5:30-8:30pm. And, Thursday and Friday at the Northwest work lofts. 7-10pm. Corner of Western Ave. and Denny. (Seattle). Be there!
