The Atlanta happy hour last night was pretty fun. We had a bigger turnout than I had expected. 8 of us, all together. And some of them knew of a few others who wanted to come but couldn't make it. The service at Hale's sucked. It took us forever to get beers; I had to order at the bar; the waitress kept forgetting things, etc.,..
I'm glad Rusty and Lisa showed. They're coming over to see my house this weekend for a cookout. The last time I saw them was right after I bought it. (16 months ago) I told them they could bring the dogs. I might invite a couple of the neighbors, but I don't want to turn it into a huge barbecue. I'll save that for next month.
Thursday is the "1st Thursday" Art Walk at Pioneer Square. I might take my stuff down to sell it if it's not raining. Dave, the flaky art coordinator finally called me back today... only to say he hadn't made any progress on putting my work up at Diva Espresso. It's just as well. I don't even want to work with them anymore. I don't know how that guy got the job. It doesn't seem like anything gets done with him at the steering wheel. And, he had the nerve to suggest that all artists should consider giving him a commission on their sales. HA!

Il fait beau.
What amazing weather we have in Seattle today. I've been out taking pictures at the park; mowing the lawn; pulling weeds, blah blah blah. This is the kind of weather I love. Some people like it hot. But,.. 60-70 suits me fine.
I borrowed my neighbors old reel mower again. It does a pretty decent job, it doesn't use gas, it's quieter than a real mower, and I get some good exercise out of it. Everybody wins.
Tonight, I'm meeting up with a group of ex-Atlantans / Georgians. Some I've never met; others I haven't seen in over a year. Should be pretty fun. 2 of them are notoriously flaky for not showing up. But, even if they don't, there will be others there. 2 others can't make it because they're sick. But, if it goes well... I'll hold another happy hour for us.
There's also another meeting tonight - the Artists' Way group that I went to last week. But, I'm blowing it off. I was the token guy last week. So, it was a little too "awww,.. that's the cutest bracelet"..... and "..in my feminist studies class this quarter,..." blah blah blah. Perhaps not for me.
I need to work on my hubcap paintings some more! I have a base coat on 3 of them. And, I might do another Andre. I figure I need about 20 caps to fill up Stella's.

Shameful confession: I've never been to Canada. It's right at my back door, but I've never gone. I keep putting it off. I guess I better go now before SARS spreads into Vancouver. All the time I've lived in Seattle, I thought it was so much further than it really is. I was thinking that it's like 4 or 5 hours away. But, according to Yahoo!, it's only 2.5 hours from my house. No excuse. Ok, 1 excuse. I'm broke. I'd like to spend the night there.. and have a few restaurant meals. But, I've gotta get some money first! dammit. i hate bein' broke.

Happy Birthday to Jennifer, today! Jen is one of my favorite people. Jen and Mark are 2 of the first people I met when I moved to Seattle. Tonight, they're having a combined birthday party / housewarming party. Should be pretty fun. The whole gang will be there. I already gave M & J a housewarming gift (a painting of their cats). But, I think I'll make a card or something to take for the bday thing. And, maybe I'll also take a bottle of wine.
Today, I'm working on some hubcap paintings.. and I need to also do some illustrations! I haven't drawn or painted in forever.

the May Day Project - Saturday May 10th 2003 - Your Day In Photos
A very cool idea. I'm planning on participating. This reminds of those "day in the life" books that were published some time ago. ('a day in the life of america, a day in the life of ireland', etc)
I love my digital camera!

I made this at the beach today. Using my handy Andre stencil that I got from obeygiant.com. I think he intended for people to spray paint with them. But, I'd rather make something that will dissolve over time. Something that's not so permanent. One half is how the sand looks normally; the other half is a negative. It makes more sense for the stencil area to be dark. But, it was easier to make this with the (dry) light-colored sand on top of the darker, wet sand.
I'm in the middle of putting together some art for a hubcap show. I'm painting 10 or 20 caps which will go up at Stella pizza in a few weeks. One of them will be an andre hubcap.
|
I was supposed to have part 1 of my juggling class tonight. But, it got cancelled. Only 3 people signed up. So, we decided to scrap it. I wouldn't have made any money on it. So, we're hoping that the next one will have more people. I'm going to try to teach it again in a couple of months.
Today, the sun has come back out. (if only for a little while) It has been covered by clouds for a really long time. So, it's good to see it again. I might head out to the park to take some photos today.
Tomorrow, Mark and Jen are having a housewarming party / birthday party. Should be pretty fun. I made them a painting for their new place. I wonder if they have hung it yet.

There's a new radio show in Seattle. Robin and Maynard - a morning talk show. I tuned in today to see what all the hype was about. (100.7 has been hyping the start of the show for weeks) And, I have to say.. I don't get it. This is horrible. These people are putting me to sleep. What's the deal here?

Andy Goldsworthy
I saw a really cool documentary today. Andy Goldsworthy is a Scottish artist who works with natural materials, where he finds them. Ice sculptures, trails of leaves that change from color to color, rock cairns, stick sculptures, etc. He has several books out. Check them out at a bookstore near you!

Welcome to TV Turnoff Network
Before I cancelled cable, I would not have thought this was a very good idea. But, now that I have about 4 decent channels to pick from,... it doesn't sound so crazy anymore. This morning, it seems like there's nothing but informercials on. I won't miss those.

new book.
I bought the new Wegman book. I didn't even know he had one out! I have a small collection of kids books. And, most of them are by Wegman. He's one of my favorite photographers.
Speaking of which, there's a new documentary I want to see. Rivers and Tides is about Andy Goldsworthy. His photographs are indescribably cool. You just have to see them to know what it's all about.

false advertising.
Sometimes I go check out the links on the leftside of the blogger home page. They'll have English Titles. But, then when I get there,.. the blog is actually in spanish.. or some other language I can't read. WTF?!
two lips.
I drove up to Skagit Valley today to take pictures of the tulips. (pictures posted later) But, I didn't have much fun. There was nowhere to park, without paying to see the flowers. So, I couldn't even get very close. I said 'screw it' and drove into LaConner. But, that was packed too. And, they wanted money for parking as well. So, I didn't get to do much of anything. I turned around and came home.
Now I could really use a nap. But, I told the Seattle telecommuters that I'd come out for the Happy Hour thing tonight in Greenwood. (it started at 5. but, i was planning on getting there around half-past.)
tomorrow, Malia is having a party for Neil. So, I think that will be pretty fun. they're providing the beer. So, I'm there.

Wouldn't it be cool if you could flip a switch on your radio or tv and get everything translated into the language of your choice? I think my tv already has subtitles. But, they must be in english only, right? I'd like to be learning French as I sit here and "work". [while I listen to the radio] But, my crappy little radio doesn't come with that switch.

francais.
Last night, I went to the French Meetup. It was pretty fun. When I arrived, I found 2 others. One was a beginner, like myself. The other guy was American,.. but much more fluent. He acted as our teacher for a while. After about half an hour, we discovered 3 others at another table. (I wish it were easier to find people at these things!) They were all very very fluent. All Americans. (one canadian, actually) I mostly just sat and listened. I understood some of what they were saying. But, I was lost most of the time. It did make me want to practice though. I plan to go to the library today and pick up a bunch of French books/cd's, etc. By the next meetup, I should be much better. Merely lousy, instead of pathetic.
I haven't actively studied French since high school. I think I took one quarter of it in 9th grade. But, I also studied it in 4th through 7th grades. So, I think I have a good base to go on. Maybe it will all come back to me. I've watched a lot of French films. So, I try to understand as much as I can without looking at the subtitles. But, I usually have to cheat.

I tried to move my blog over to my other domain. but it didn't work. I'll have to figure this out some other time.
So, here's a new topic. What is it with people who are only dating, but they celebrate "anniversaries?" I mean.. aside from the fact that "anniversary" means 'yearly.' Why do people say "it's our 6 month anniversary"? What marks that point? The anniversary of their first date? Who writes that kind of thing down?? The anniversary of the 1st boinking? (maybe they're one and the same) Did they just pick some arbitrary date? I know some friends who have been dating, that's right - just dating- for 10 years. 10 years. They had a 10th anniversary... OF DATING.

CNN.com - Smoking ban triggers deadly brawl - Apr. 13, 2003
What people will do to get a smoke.
This story reminded me of what happened one night when I was working at a video store. (this was about 10 years ago) We had our doors propped open, when I saw a guy enter with a cigarette. I told him that smoking wasn't allowed inside the video store. But, instead of just putting the cigarette out, the guy went off on me. He didn't physically attack me. But, he got in my face and was yelling and cussing up a storm. And, it turns out that he was a cop! He started threatening me with his authority- saying he would pull me over next time he saw me, etc. His embarrased wife kept trying to shut him up. But, it did no good. He continued to make an ass of himself while the other employees and patrons just stared.

Who Moved My Cheese?!
Today, I worked as an extra on the Comedy Central show Trigger Happy TV. It's a sort of less vulgar version of Jackass, started in Britain. And, they've been shooting the American version in Seattle for the last few weeks. Today, I played a rat in one sketch. I had to steal a giant wheel of cheese and run down the street with it.
In another sketch, I got to play a dog in an alleyway lineup. An actress named Jessica lines up the usual suspects and tries to figure out who's responsible for the big phony pile of poop.
I was in 1 more sketch. But, you'll have to just watch for that one. I was standing in Kerry Park, overlooking Seattle,.. when Jessica asks me to be in a photograph with her, dressed as her boyfriend. I'm not sure when my sketches are going to air. But, the show comes on Mondays at 10.

I guess it was a "good" day in Iraq? If you can say such a thing about war. Better than yesterday, I suppose.
When the soldier draped the American flag over the statue of Saddam Hussein though, it made my skin crawl. Didn't one of our soldiers get in trouble for doing that before??
My mom asked me, on the Saturday after the start of the war, if I was going to put my flag out. I haven't. I'm still kind of on the fence about this. I'm not very proud Bush's war. And, I'll be happy when this is over. Most of the current flag-wavers out there today are your hardcare Republicans. They use the flag as a way to say "See... Bush, Good!" But, I think I'll wait till a better occasion to put my flag out.
I went to the vegetarian meetup tonight. Only 4 of us showed. One woman stopped by our table to say she wanted to stick around but had to be somewhere else tonight. So, she's going to join us nex time. You'd think we could find more vegetarians to join us. This is Seattle, right?
After the vegetarian meetup, we had the Photography meetup. A huge turnout. Good crowd; good camera talk; good pictures. Everybody had fun, I think. I hope to join them on their next photo safari.
Speaking of which, if it's sunny tomorrow, I'll head up to the Tulip festival and shoot some landscapes.

CNN.com - Media deaths explanation sought - Apr. 9, 2003
I think I might have an explanation. They were in BAGHDAD!
Attention journalists!.... In case you hadn't noticed, there's a real war going on. Bullets are flying. People are dying. Perhaps you should report from a safer location?
How long before one of your high profile reporters gets in the way of a mortar shell or an RPG? We could be witnessing the last days of Ted Koppell or Wolf Blitzer.

I got back from the Meetup a little while ago. Good turnout. Pretty good cafe. But, the house music was kind of loud. It was hard to hear some of the conversation at times.
Way too much time was spent talking about "Memoirs of a Geisha" by this guy who hadn't read the whole thing. He's one of these guys who lives abroad for a little while, then thinks he's the foremost authority on that place. So, he took issue with the innacuracies of geisha life. (the book is fiction, btw.)
Two people answered their cell phones during the meeting. [How fucking rude is that?] The first time it happened, the guy was stuck on the back side of the table, and couldn't get out. Turns out it was another person looking for the meeting spot. Then it happened again. The woman started to get up and leave. But, instead she just stood beside her chair and continued the phone conversation. WTF?
Tomorrow night is the combo: the vegetarian ... and then the photography meetup. They'll both be at the Barnes and Noble cafe downtown. Check it out if you're in Seattle and have any interest.
New template?
Should I change my template? I'm getting a little tired of the robot. and, I should really use one of my own illustrations, right?

That was quite a rant yesterday. I think I've cooled off.
here's what's good about today:
last night, I dreamed I was moving to Manhattan. I would never actually do this in real life. But, it was an interesting dream.
today, I went to my bank to make a deposit. And, after my transaction.. I was rewarded with an Easter chocolate.
Is easter this Sunday?
tonight, I'm going to the Bookcrossing meetup. I wasn't going to go. I haven't read any of my bookcrossing books; and I don't have room to pick up new ones to read. But, I need to get out of the house. It's a good way to fight the isolation of self(un)-employment. I need to be around other humans and talk to them and stuff. It's better than sitting in front of the tv. Not that I can do that anymore either. I cancelled cable about a week ago.
But there I go getting negative again. Ok- go to your happy place. Um. It was sunny today! I worked in the yard. I pulled lots of weeds. (goddam dandelions) And, it looks a bit better. I think it's going to rain tonight. But, hopefully it will get sunny again towards the end of the week. If it does, I'm going to head up to Skagit valley and shoot some photos of the tulip fields.

Parents of the Year
Pfc. Lori Ann Piestewa, mother of 2.
James M. Kiehl, leaves behind a pregnant wife.
Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Ross Chapman, father of 2.
All killed in Iraq. Just 3 of many stories just like this.
Even David Bloom, the reporter,.. and father of 3 young daughters, who died yesterday. It came out today that his death may have been brought on by dehydration and the crampt quarters of his vehicle. Why would someone who isn't even supposed to be there do something like this?
Don't kids deserve better? Shouldn't they get to grow up with both parents? Why would someone in a high-risk job like this have children? Why would someone with children take a job that puts their life in danger, and risk making an orphan out of their kids? If I see one more child on TV being handed a flag at his parent's funeral, I think I'll slit my wrists. It kills me to see pictures like that. I don't understand it. It's one thing to be passionate about defending your country. But, when you become a parent, your priorities have to change. If being a soldier is more important to you, THEN DON'T HAVE KIDS.

Patriotic Pets - Non-Profit Organization caring for the pets of deployed Military members
A crappy web site... but a really good idea. Please volunteer if you can.
I saw a story today about pets being surrendered to animal shelters so military personnel could go off to Iraq. If you can't keep your pet, DON'T GET A PET!

I'm not a fan of the movie. I just liked the poster. But, the studio changed it because they thought it was too controversial.
whatever.

We didn't get any snow in Seattle this year. So, I decided to take a drive out to the mountains to see some. This is probably my last chance. I had read that it was snowing today and yesterday in Roslyn. So, I drove about 90 minutes East to have lunch at the Roslyn Cafe. (made famous in Northern Exposure) There was no snow there. That was a little disappointing. The restaurant was empty; the food was good. (the have lots of vegetarian stuff) Since I didn't get my snow fix there, I drove back to Snoqualmie Pass. That's where I took these pictures.
Even though the ski area was closed for the season, there was some fresh snow there. And lots of high-packed snow surrounding the parking lot. There were some guys with dogs snowboarding on the bottom part of the mountain. I think there may have been a half-pipe there. But, I couldn't see over the ridge. It was pretty funny to watch the dogs chase them and run along side them. The dogs would tackle the guy at the end of his run each time. There was also a woman and her daughter with a sled. The mom pulled around for a bit, then pushed her down the bunny slope while the kid squealed.
The drive is incredible. Great views. I don't know what it is about snow. It just makes the scenery so much better. I could never live where it snows all winter long. But, I love to experience it every now and then.
Spring will come soon here. I'm ready for warm weather!

Environmental Defense
The federal government has released new fuel economy standards for light trucks and SUVs, but the new numbers for some of today's most popular vehicles fall far short in reducing the nation's oil dependency and safeguarding the environment.
