CNN.com - Cockfighting law discriminates against Cajuns, Latinos, lawsuit claims - May. 30, 2003
Please! These idiots are suing because they say "cockfighting is part of our culture." Molesting altar boys seems to be a part of Catholic clergy "culture" too, but it's still wrong!

The Birds and The Bees
My backyard is full of critters. Lots of birds appear every now and then, to forage for whatever bugs and worms they can find. I also have 2 birds that built a nest in one of my shrubs. I first noticed them while they were building their nest. They would fly back and forth, bringing pieces of grass and straw. In between flights, they perch on the old clothes-drying rack. I tried to stay out of their way as much as possible. They would sometimes fly away when they saw me in the window. But, they've gotten much braver lately. It's almost like they're watching me now. I can stand at the back door without them getting scared and flying off now. They even seem to hop closer to see what I'm up to. Yesterday, they watched me paint my back door. Maybe they were just making sure I didn't mess with their kids. I hear the baby birds chirping a lot now. Their parents make lots of trips to get them grub. I wonder how long before they'll move out and kick the kids out of the nest.
Another critter I have a lot of these days is the wasp. There's a nest right by my back door. They're living in the electric meter there. I'd spray them, but those chemicals are pretty nasty. And, they'll probably just hide until the fog clears. So, I bought a yellow jacket trap yesterday. So far, it's not working. But, I hope they find it it soon. You're supposed to hang it 20 feet from the nest. I hung it on the side fence. But, these guys haven't discovered it yet.

I'm not being very productive today. The weather is too nice. I don't feel like doing any real work. I should be drawing. I should be chasing leads; making cold calls. But, all I want to do is wander around and take photographs.
One thing I am getting done though is a project I have put off for over a year. I'm finally painting my front door. The current color is pink. And, it's hideous. So, I picked out a new dark red that kind of mimics the Japanese maple in my yard.

Give me a break. What's the point of having a photo on your i.d. if you can't tell who the person is? If she wants to keep her head covered,... fine. But, she shouldn't get to drive. Why should her religion get to override state law?

Kind of interesting, if you're a movie freak. It's a list of all the fake 555 numbers used in movies. It seems that 'Bruce Almighty' producers forgot to use a fake prefix. So, idiots have been dialing the real number and asking for God.

I took some more Phoons today. I mailed them in.. so they won't be posted for a while. But, my first three are there.
I went down to the NW Folklife festival today. It was pretty cool and overcast. So, it wasn't as fun as yesterday... when the sun was out. I didn't really listen to any music or anything; just wandered around, sat and did some people-watching. The international fountain is the best spot. So many people having fun playing in the water. Makes me wish I was 5 again.
After the folk fest, I met up with Zhe and Paolo to parle some italiano. Katie, the hottie, didn't show up. But, it was fun to get some extra practice with a geniune Italian. I'm worried that I'm trying to learn too many languages at once. They're all getting jumbled together. If I had to focus on just one, it would probably be French.
On Thursday, I picked up the ceramic mask that I'm going to paint for the fundraiser/auction. It benefits the Puget Sound Blood Center. The auction is in October, I think. There's a big gala and a silent auction. The celebrity masks usually pull in the most money. Act now, and you can own a piece of my art before I'm too expensive for ya!

I made my first Phoon today!

I took a bunch of them, actually. But, the upload script on phoons.com doesn't work for me. (I think it's an anti-Mac issue.) So, I'll probably end up emailing mine in.
The NW Folklife festival is this weekend. There should be some good photo opps there. I went for a little while today. Just did some people watching and hanging out.
Mark and Jen are having a cookout on Sunday. I'm looking forward to that. My friend John is having a competing barbecue on the same day. So, I'll have to go where there's vegetarian chow.

I made a return visit to Krispy Kreme today. The "walk-up parking" signs still point you to nowhere. So, I decided to try my luck at the drive thru. I pulled into the Lowe's parking lot. And, the doughnut nazi from yesterday was nowhere to be found. So far, so good. I followed the sign to the KK drive-thru. And, amazingly,... they had created some walk-up parking spaces. I found one of the parking cops and asked why half the parking spaces were blocked with cones. He told me they have to keep changing the spots from parking to drive-thru lines. This left me with a space only wide enough for my car- parked an inch from the driver beside me. By the time I came back out, I was stuck in a newly created drive-thru lane.
Ok. But, I did finally make it inside! They filter the pedestrians thru a tent containing all sorts of KK merch. I snagged a kiddie hat. And headed in thru the main door. I was greeted with a great view of the production line. Mmmmm, fried dough! Suger shower conveyor belt! Bliss. I even got a free doughnut while I waited. I ordered my coffee and doughnut... and I was on my way. Success.

I went on a pilgrimage to the new Krispy Kreme this morning. I decided I would drive by to check it out. If the line or the parking were impossible, then I would skip it. When I pulled up to the light alongside the new location, things looked decent. Nobody standing in line; and not too much traffic around the building. The problem is that there's nowhere to park! Their parking lot is adjacent to the Lowe's. But, they have cones everywhere, and "Lowe's parking only" signs everywhere. I decided to pull in and see if there was any place to stop. But, I was met by the Doughnut Nazi who was stopping every single car pulling into the Lowe's parking lot. When I saw the person in front of me stop and talk to him, I decided I would just drive on out and go to Starbucks. But the D.N. stopped me and made me roll down my window. "Parking, driving through, or going to Lowe's?", DN asked. "LEAVING," I replied.
So, I pulled out of the parking lot, onto the main road. There was a sign that said "KK parking" with an arrow pointing nowhere in particular. So, I followed it. But, I could find no additional signs showing where to go. Fuck it. I guess they don't want my donut money.

Hot Donuts Tomorrow!
A new krispy kreme opens tomorrow. The first in Seattle. We got our first one in Washington a little over a year ago. But, this will be the first one that's close. It's only a couple of miles from my house. I'm pretty psyched about it. They've got all the cones and tents setup for the grand opening. It's going to be a madhouse. I wish they would have a midnight opening. Then, I could beat the pre-rush-hour crowd.
Tomorrow is the Spanish meetup. (which I'm going to miss) And, Wednesday is the French meetup. I'm looking forward to it. It's been 5 weeks since the last one! (we had an extra Wednesday in April.) This will be my 2nd one. I think my French has gotten a little better since the last meetup. I'm hoping to listen the first few times... and eventually be able to understand what's going on. Then, after a few more, maybe I can jump in and actually speak.

Seattle's Best Burrito
I added a new entry to my burrito page today.
I was going to go to the U District street fair. But, i decided to hit the fremont market instead. better parking; smaller crowd. I hit the Ballard market on my way home... but there wasn't much worth seeing (or buying) there.
Seattle Works day was pretty fun yesterday. We pulled ivy (the usual project) at Martha Washington Park, right by Lake WA. After the project, we went to the SWD party at Sand Point. It was a smaller party than last year. And, my group didn't stay very long. That was pretty disappointing. The band was good though. And the beer was free! So, that's always good.
Tomorrow, I'm having a few folks over for the screening of Ellen Rimbauer. We'll have to fast-forward up to the good parts. Phil porn.

I'm missing the lunar eclipse. Seattle's sky is covered in clouds.
I remember seeing a lunar eclipse when I was a teenager. I was at the beach with my family. I watched the eclipse from the deck of our condo, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. I had my tripod setup so Dad and I could watch the eclipse through my zoom lens. I don't think my photos turned out too great. It was a little too dark to catch the action.

My hubcap art show went up this morning. If you find yourself in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle, go check out my work at Stella Pizza.
I don't think I'll have an opening reception. But, my neighboor said he'd buy the beer and pizza if we all go down there one night. Sounds like a deal.
Tonight is the photography meetup. I'm going to be a geek, and take my Powerbook with me. That way I can show the digital stuff I've shot over the last month. Hopefully, nobody will steal my idea. I plan to turn my rock and flower pictures into something. Books, calendars, or cards, etc...

My movie was on last night. But, as I suspected... most of my big scenes were too quick for anyone to spot me. I had to tape the movie because I was at the Italian meetup. We had 5 people there. 1 real Italian... and the rest were Americans. Pretty fun. We spent most of the time speaking in English.
This morning, I met with a graphics temp agency. Hopefully, they can find me some jobs to fill in my empty days. They almost had a job for me on Monday. But, it fell through at the last minute.
Tonight, I'm going to the bookcrossing meetup. I've been reading "Sorrow Floats" by Tim Sanders. It's not as good as the first in the trilogy. ("Skipped Parts") So, I'm about to give up and move on. A better book that I'm reading is "The Dictionary of Troublesome Words" by Bill Bryson.

i participated in yesterday's "mayday project", where you photograph your day... every hour. It was a lot tougher than I thought it would be. It made the say go by much faster. And, I wasn't that happy with the end result. But, I was glad that the event coincided with my ArtWalk. So, I got some shots of prepping for the reception,.. and some of the artwalk patrons.
Here are the other May day pics that others took..

I hung my art show yesterday. The opening reception is Saturday, 7-10. Come on down! I think it's going to be pretty fun.
There are times when I get really bummed out about my starving artist situation. It sucks not having money to do basic things like go to a movie once in a while. But, then I have moments like this:
Yesterday, at 4pm, I played racquetball at the Downtown Y with a woman named Donna. I hadn't played since last summer. I met Donna thru Craig's list. I offered free racquetball lessons to anyone who could provide a court. So, she took me up on it. I never would have been able to play if i had a real 'job.' Donna was a really interesting person. She's going to flight school to become a pilot. While we were warming up, a girl that knew Donna happened to walk by our court. She joined us for the rest of the hour - another really interesting (not to mention very attractive) girl. She's going to China to teach English in August.
Another example of this happened a few days ago. I hung my photography show at Starbucks. And, while I was there.. an older guy from Australia struck up a conversation with me. He had just been to Charleston. So, we talked about South Carolina, hiking the Appalachian trail, Australia, Bill Bryson,.. all sorts of stuff. Again,.. I never would have met him if I had been in working in an office that day.

There's a picture of Helen Keller on the new Alabama quarter. Is that all they're famous for? I mean, she was an amazing person. But, doesn't Alabama have anything else? I guess not. There's also braille lettering on the quarter. But, it's so shrunken that it would be impossible to "read." ??

an old joke we Georgians like to tell:
q - What's the only good thing about Alabama?
a - It separates us from Mississippi!

David, the flaky art 'organizer' finally gave me a place and time to hang my work. I'm meeting him at the Shoreline Starbucks at 1. (I'm sure there are lots of art patrons up there.) He'll probably be late. He was so disorganized when I talked to him on the phone this morning. Lots of pauses and silences and cussing. Then, he said... 'uh, I'll try to be there at 1. But, you might have to come back later tonight and hang everything if there are too many people there.' Great.
Anyway - I now have 3 shows going up! woohoo!
un: Ballard ArtWalk - Zerene Salon, Saturday 7-10.
deux: Starbucks Shoreline - polaroid transfers - going up today
trois: Stella Pizza - the Hubcap show! (in Georgetown) - going up next Thursday

It's good to be the boss.
I'm a model employee. I'm the first one in the office every morning. And, I'm the last one to leave every night. I think I deserve a raise.
My 'trigger happy TV' skits were on tonight. I watched them over at Mike's house since I don't get Comedy Central. They only showed 2 of the skits I was in. And, they only showed a portion of 1 of the takes I did on the cheese-stealing-rat skit. But, oh well. It was my proudest 15 seconds of stardom yet. They showed my last take - the one where the old man wouldn't hand over the cheese. He took his job of watching after the cheese a little too seriously.
I took a bunch more pictures at the park today. Actually, I went to the Arboretum. What an incredible place. In the 3 years I've lived here, I had yet to check it out. I think my photos might sell well at the 1st Thursday thing. Perhaps I'll give it a shot.

2 gripes.
Ok, first of all - Bernie Mac is featured in tonight's King of the Hill. Why is it that the cartoon version of the guy looks more human than the actual GUY himself? I mean, what the hell is with that guy's hair? I'd tell him that it's 2003.... but, it's not even like his style is from another era, it's just... just.... wrong!!
Next: Ok, I'm not admitting that I've actually watched Mr. Personality. BUT-- here's what's buggin' me. The idea behind the show is that the guys are masked to conceal their physical appeance. So, the chick has to choose a guy based on personality alone. The catch, of course, is that half the guys are actually butt-ugly. So, how pathetic are the guys who get sent home each week? They're basically being told: not only are you too unattractive to date, (thus, the hood) - but, your personality also sucks! Wow. double bummer. In the words of Jerry Seinfeld: "UNdateable!"
note to self: basic cable tv on saturday and sunday afternoons really blows.

The Plug - Sour Puss
this guy cracks me up. the 'camera-on-the-hotel-doorknob' idea is fucking brilliant. but, it was thwarted by a paranoid concierge.

1st Thursday
If you live in Seattle, come check out the Pioneer Square Art Walk tonight. I'll be down there selling my work after 5pm. All the starving artists get to spread out on the square and show their stuff during the regular gallery openings. This is your chance to get some great deals, see lots of great art, and enjoy spring.
