cheaters.
one of my biggest pet peeves is when people are cheaters. from line jumpers to insurance frauds. these people are out to get more than the next guy, and screw people any way they can. bullies, basically.
so, here's what happened today. I needed to go to the bank to cash a check. So, I pull in a couple of seconds after this other guy. he was driving a big giant-ass gas-guzzling lincoln continental or cadillac or some such other stretch 'luxury' car. he pulls into the parking spot right by the front door. i park 5 steps away, in the vacant spot across from the entrance. When he gets out of his car, i immediately notice 2 things. first: he's parked in the handicapped spot. and next: he's rather sprightly and able-bodied. he did have the required paperwork- a (removable) hanger for his rear-view mirror that has the blue wheelchair logo on it. [by the way- in the past, i've seen people who have these just for using while they park in the handicapped spots. then they take them off the mirror after they pull away. I don't understand why some cars have the full-on handicapped tag, while others just have the mirror hanger] but, i couldn't detect any sort of physical disabilty that might make it necessary for him to park where he did. now, a quick disclaimer: i know that there are physical conditions which technically qualify someone for one of those parking permits, but which don't show up as obviously as others (such as someone in a wheelchair, for instance). So, he may have had one of those hidden conditions. Or maybe not? maybe it was a borrowed car? maybe it was for a spouse or relative? his grandmother? Or maybe he got it some other way. or let's say it IS for him. remember that he sprung from his car and had no trouble making it into the bank. he was about 5'5" tall; medium build; around 30 years old, I'd say. The picture of health, as far as i could tell. so, even if he has one of these hidden conditions, why does he think he can take the closest spot to the entrance, when someone in a wheelchair may need it more. (remember, that there were empty spots a few more steps away.)
now, it gets worse. this guy kept on losing points after that. i got in line behind him. and he absolutely reeked of 2nd hand smoke. it smelled like somebody was holding a giant ashtray under my nose. so, i stepped back a couple of steps. but i could still smell him. and i had to continue smelling him while we waited for the next 3 customers to be waited on. then!,... we get to the front spot in line. he's going to be next. and there's a low table with a basket of lollipops on it. 1- these are probably for kids. and 2- it's the honor system... presumably, one per customer. so, what does smokey do? he digs through the basket looking for his favorite flavors, comes out with a fist full of lollipops, and shoves them in his pocket. .... so, then he makes his transaction,... and i make one,....
then!, we're pulling out of the parking lot. there's a sign that says "no left turn". Want to guess which way he turns?
it's like rules just don't apply to this guy. i wonder how many people he shafts every day. did i just catch him in a moment of weakness? or do you think he lives his whole life like this? taking and taking at every step, cheating those that are more deserving; breaking rules; screwing people over.

I was told to come hang my art show at 6pm last night. I rolled up a little early so I could get a jump start on it. At 5:45, I park the car and take out the first few paintings. The "open" sign has been turned off. As I reach the door, 4 cafe employees are walking out, staring out my confusedly.
me: "Hello!, I'm here to hang my art show."
them: blank stares
me: "I was supposed to be here at 6. You're open till 6, right?"
them: "uh, nobody told us."
me: [feeling guilty] "Oh, should I come back? Looks like you're all ready to get out of here."
them: "no, go ahead."
So they sat on the couch and waited for me. They were all going somewhere together. So, they sat there and smoked until I finished. Luckily, it didn't take me very long. And, they said they liked my work. So, they didn't mind waiting for me.
It's a really small space. So, I didn't bring much work. And, I had to take 2 pieces home - no room for them.
If you live in Seattle, go check out Cloud City Coffee! 8801 Roosevelt, in the Maple Leaf neighborhood. Sit under the disco ball and have a cuppa joe. Bring your Powerbook and do some free wireless 'net surfin'. Or browse the bookcrossing shelf and take home a novel or two.

i got a haircut [finally] the other day. it had been about 6 or 8 months. I look 14 now.
--
last night's party was pretty fun. it was a pretty different group of friends though. it's pretty weird to go to a party at m&j's house and not have the 4 or 5 other regulars that you expect there. this was different since it was a post-wedding party for another couple. they sort of had their own guest list. watching the dvd of the wedding was only slightly painful. K made lots of kickass [strong] martinis [sake-tinis, actually] which made things go smoother.
--

yesterday, i sat in the shadow of the space needle watching the kids play in the fountain. the 'international fountain' is like a big silver flying saucer. it starts out calmly oozing water from somewhere on top. kids wait patiently for a cool blast of water. then, it suddenly bursts to life, spewing water in 50 directions; 4 water cannons on top shoot water 100 feet into the air as Ode To Joy swells from the underground speakers surrounding the fountain. the kids scatter, squealing with delight.

some of the kids sit around the perimeter of the saucer, atop individual water jets. a burst of water shoots up between their legs every few seconds. on the other side of the fountain, 7 shirtless kids drag a bigger, dry kid into the range of the squirting saucer. another kid runs around the perimeter of the fountain with a small dilapidated umbrella. it is not keeping him dry.

tonight, i'm hanging my art show at Cloud City Coffee. I went by this morning just to check things out. And, i also got to try their wireless internet access. (Why didn't I blog from there?) It's so friggin cool! Not only can i surf and email from their cafe; but, it's also free. Starbucks charges. But, there are lots of places in Seattle that have free wireless networks. [mark even wants to start one at his house] And, isn't that how it should be? I also went by there so I could drop off one of my bookcrossing books. It was Snow Falling on Cedars, which I bought on-tape for my drive out here. (i think honor was there when i got it at borders in atlanta?) I'm afraid I never listened to it. But, i did read the first few chapters of the print version. It was a little slow-moving - so, I gave it up.
last night, i went to Suzanne's. She had a cocktail party for friends; she's off to Montana to build houses for Habitat. Her boyfriend was there. Mr. blue collar tattoo-boy. whatever. Turns out that S. and I are the same age. So, we have a lot of the same (80s/90s) music taste.
tonight is the mark and jen party. mark had to leave town, I think. family funeral. so, jen will be hosting it solo. i'm thinking it will be fairly small. hope i won't have to sit thru wedding stories and videos. boring.
the weather in seattle is perfectly summerful right now. amazing. hot, sunny,.. perfect. The juggling festival is going on down at seattle center. so, i'm going to go down and check that out in a bit. I missed their performances last night; and i'll miss the one tonight. but, i'll try to catch them next year.
I've posted a few pictures on photographica this week. go rate me. or post comments.

I just realized something. I took about 5 pictures while riding in Leopard Bernstein. But, they evaporated into thin air.
I rode along with Kelly for a short while during the Art Car blowout last Sunday. I took some shots of the interior, and the rest of the cars. But, they are nowhere to be found. I imported everything from my camera. But, somehow, those have disappeared. damn.

misc.
the fog rolled in off of puget sound this morning. it made everything gauzy and ethereal.
i love living next to the water.
i posted my link to some foot pictures for the theme thursday page. some links are broken. and of course the phone number is 3 years old.
the phoon site has my latest submissions. i'm running out of things to shoot. so, i might slow down now. there's a couple more i'm planning though. one will be at the meeting of the seattle french bulldog owners. another will be an attempt to break the biggest group phoon record. it will be tough though. there are about 80 in the latest one. i'd like to get 100.
david charles is in town for a couple of days. he's staying here tonight, i think. he doesn't like to plan. so, he'll probably call late today. i'm dragging him down to SAW for the 1 night art show. then we're meeting with some other guys at the acorn eatery for beers on the deck. dave is living in wisconsin; but he's interviewing for a new job in puyallup. would be cool if he moved here. but he's probably looking at lots of different places. he never stays in one place for very long. i think he gets bored easily. i finally cleaned my office/guest bedroom for company. it's amazing. i can walk around without stepping on a stack of papers or kicking a pile of books now. i can get to my closet and cd rack without feats of agility. i wonder how long it will stay like this. my desk tends to reclutter after periodic cleanings. but maybe it's different with a bedroom floor.
tomorrow, suzanne is having a "cocktail party." I'll drop by for a little while. i think she has a boyfriend, or somebody new she's dating. peccato.
saturday, mark and jen are having a party for cristine and kyung. they got married last fall. but we're just now throwing them a [local] party because they wanted to wait for their wedding video to be finished. good god. do i have to sit thru that? rumor has it that cristine is also wearing her wedding dress to the party. omfg.
also on saturday, i'm hanging my show at cloud city coffee. it's a small space. but a new neighborhood for me. [finally] i'll be showing stuff from the ballard art walk; but some of it will be new. since it's a smaller space, i had to make some smaller paintings. no official reception; but maybe i'll have people meet me for coffee one weekend morning. they have a cool system. throw a buck in the cup and pour your own. they also have bookcrossing books. I have some to drop off. bill gave me a huge stack that he was having trouble selling on half.com.

I've been reluctant to post lately.
Not because I have nothing to say. But, because I've felt a little self-censored.
I feel like a blog is for saying whatever is on your mind. good or bad. Positive or negative. But, after a recent episode.. I felt like I was posting too much negative stuff.
When things are going perfectly, there's not as much need to purge your head. I mostly feel the need to blog when things aren't going as well. But, if it only brings concern from others.. then I feel like I should just bottle it up. Keep it to myself. Why throw negative energy out into the metaverse?
But that's what blogs are for! Saying whatever is on your mind! Good, bad or indifferent. Boring or scintillating. Happy or sad. Take it or leave it. This is my life. This is what's in my head; what's on my mind. Take it or leave it.
And so.
I have this friend. I've known him for, let's see,.. about 8 years, I think. For a while, we both lived in Atlanta. But, now we live on opposite coasts. Over the years, we've kept in touch. We would see each other whenever we were both in Atlanta. He's even passed through Seattle a couple of times. But, over the last year, we've hardly talked. I understand that friendships change. People grow apart. But, this seems to have been more sudden. I can't figure out what happened. I saw him for a few days in February. But, we didn't get much one on one time to hang out.
He was supposed to come to Seattle this weekend. But, I never heard from him. I wouldn't have even known he was in town if i hadn't heard about it from another friend we have in common. He says, now, that he left me a message on Friday. But, i never got it. And wtf?! Why does he call the day before he comes to town. I assumed he was crashing at my place. I've got a spare bedroom. And, he hasn't seen the new place yet. But, he's here. And, he didn't even bother calling my cell phone. He didn't email either. (and he knows I check email religously.) He claims that he thought I was out of town or busy, since I didn't answer his voice mail. (which I never got) But, I find this all very suspicious.
Now, he says he'll be back in town in a few more weeks. So, we're going to try to get together then. But, I'm still confused by all this. Should I feel dissed? Or should I just assume that it's what happens when you're apart from someone for an extended period? things change. And, that's just the way it is? Well that sucks. I think you can keep a friendship going. But, it takes contact.
My best friend lives 3,000 miles away. But, we still keep in touch through email and occasional weekend phone calls. I think I'll always be friends with him. We've known each other since we were about 15. And, I think we'll always stay friends. No matter where we move; how far apart we are. We'll always stay in touch.

I'm not feeling bloggy anymore. Nobody reads this shit anyway.
bye.
oh. one last thought:
Microsoft quietly announced that they're going to stop developing Internet Explorer for the Mac. Now this wouldn't be such a big deal except that it's the number ONE browser in use out there today. So, how are we (web designers) supposed to continue checking to make sure our sites work in their lame-ass browser?
I mean - I'm glad to get rid of another microsoft product. Apple has it's own browser (Safari. which is only in fuckin BETA right now). But, I still have to test in various browsers so I can see if anything is broken. I can't do that if the only software I have is Safari.
msft sucks.

The Seattle Times: Vendors asked to move for art walk
The latest news is that they want the artists to move to a different area (away from the actual galleries.) Come to the art walk in July, but SKIP the galleries! They want to get rid of us entirely. Afterall, we're not "legitimate emerging artists."

Boycott Pioneer Square Galleries
The art gallery owners in Pioneer Square are upset with the artists who sell their work at the First Thursday event each month. They feel like the street artists have adversely affected the Art Walk event. So, they have kicked the artists out, and will not allow them back next month. I think they're going to regret the drop in foot traffic. I, for one, won't be visiting any galleries down there any more.
Greg Kucera, who owns a gallery in Pioneer Square, was particularly vocal about this. Referring to the artists, he said "they have ruined our event."
Thanks, Greg. Way to foster a friendly art community!

it is so fukkn hot in seattle today. i'm melting. holy shiite. it was 90 yesterday. but today felt hotter.
and i'm exhausted. i'm overloaded on sun, food, beer and yard work. and i've still got tons to do. i have a commissioned painting that's not finished. and it needs to be ready for a birthday gift tomorrow. and i have a web site that somebody is all over me about. i'm so tired of that project i might just bail on it.
today was a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis- a pub crawl in Fremont. it was pretty fun. the samples were pretty small. but that was a good plan. i wouldn't have been able to drive home if they had been full pints. at the end, they had a Tully's espresso cart. so, we got iced soy mochas for the road. i went with rusty and lisa. i never get to see them. so, i was really glad they invited me to do this.
more food beer and sun tomorrow. but, at least it will be cooler. it's supposed to only go up to 77. i'm having a little cookout. the first of many this summer, i hope.

I, Anonymous (06/05/03)
funny rant today. I see idiots like this all the time, crossing against the light.
I wrote a rant of my own to them just now. It was about the protesters at the art walk last night. they plopped in front of my spot and shouted 'end the occupation of palestine'. WHAT?! It pissed me off that they blocked my customers from seeing my art, and clogged up pedestrian traffic while the artists were trying to earn a living.

Last night, I set up an art spot down at the 1st Thursday Art Walk in Pioneer Square. It was packed. The warm Seattle weather brought lots of people out. I didn't expect to sell anything. But, I ended up selling 2 pieces. I'm using the money to participate in the Cystic Fibrosis Pub Crawl in Fremont tomorrow. There are a bunch of pubs participating. For our entry fee, we get a beer at each stop. A friend of mine has CF. And he asked me to join him at the event. So, I was worried I wouldn't be able to scrape together the fee. But, thanks to my sales last night, I'll be able to meet up with him and his girlfriend.
Tonight, there's a cool sounding art show at SAW. And, then I'm going to Shara's housewarming party / Kevin-going-away party.

I found this goose family wandering around the shore of West Seattle the other day. The little ones were having trouble marching over the rocks. They kept stumbling behind their mom. One of them was pretty adventurous; he kept moving ahead of the group and leading the way.

Sparky, the border collie.
Sparky is the dog that lives next door. And, I think the boy needs help. Mental help, I mean. He howls at sirens. Which is kind of endearing, actually. But, he also barks every time he sees me. He knows me. And, he lets me pet him when he's close enough. But, every time he sees me, he barks like I'm O.J. or something. He even barks at his master every time he gets home. He barks at any sound he hears outside his fence. Sometimes, he gets out of his fenced backyard. And, he barks his head off because he's stuck on the wrong side of the fence and can't get back inside. (the neighbors don't lock their gate. And, he can nudge it open with his nose. But the door closes behind him automatically.) The other night, I heard him barking his head off because he had gotten himself stuck on the wrong side of the gate. I had to go out and rescue him one night a couple months ago. He had pushed his way outside again. And, he was barking right next to my bedroom window. Woke me up around 4 a.m. My neighbor says that they now will start locking their gate. I hope so!

Happy anniversary to me.
It's my 3rd anniversary in Seattle. I left on May 29th of 2000. And, I arrived a few days later, stopping at various interesting places along the way. I love it here. I wish I had moved here a decade ago, before I got sick of Atlanta.

A new mirror project submission. I haven't sent anything to them in months and months. (maybe a year?) But, I caught this reflection as I was walking out to my car today. So, I thought I'd give it a shot.
|
I had lunch at Cyber Dogs today! They have a totally vegetarian menu. Lots of vegan stuff too. It's a pretty inconvenient location for me. But, great if you work downtown. They have like 10 kinds of hotdogs. I had the "Coney Island" today. It comes covered with veggie chili. Mmmmm. Damn good hotdog!
The owner, Tania, is from St. Petersberg. She's incredibly cool. We chatted about food and computers and art today while I chowed. She's also an amateur matchmaker. So, she's gonna find me a chick.
If you live in Seattle, do yourself a favor and try this place!

I was supposed to hang a show at the Alki Bath House today at 10 a.m. I rang them up just to make sure someone was there. No answer. I waited. I called again. No answer. I waited some more. I called again. Still no answer. Finally, I just decided to head on down there. I had already gone to the trouble of boxing up my art, and loading the car. So, I figured maybe they just weren't answering the phone.
So, I drive all the way over to West Seattle. I go inside, where I'm supposed to be hanging my stuff. And, there's another artist in my space. I couldn't find my contact who arranged for me to show my work. But, I did find another artist who was there. She was really put out that I had interrupted her. But, she gave me the phone number for my contact lady. When I called her, she said the following:
Art Lady: The Bath House is being closed for renovation. Didn't I call you?
Me: No.
AL: Oh, I thought I called you.
Me: You didn't tell me this.
AL: I'm sorry. We're closing down for 9 months.
Me: I'm standing outside with all my stuff. What happens now?
AL: Didn't I call you about this?
Me: No. I wouldn't have loaded my car and driven all the way over here if I knew about this.
AL: Oh. Because I thought I had let you know. I'm sorry.
So, I got back in the car and drove home. HAH HAH! Joke's on you, art boy!
I guess I'll leave all my crap in the car and try my luck at the 1st Thursday thing this week.
