Faces for Life 2003
The mask I painted for Puget Sound Blood Center is on display at Bellevue Square. They hung it upside down. But, I'm having them turn it over the right way. [it's also upside down on the site; but I think they're fixing that too] I went by last night to check them out. There are some really excellent pieces in the exhibit. But, I admit, I kind of phoned mine in. I was feeling the pressure. Oh well. I'll do better next year.

My new Apple store T.

Katherine found this and sent it to me. She took it this summer when we were both assisting classes at Seattle Center. I always feel a little ridiculous waiting for the shutter to click. So, I usually end up making stupid faces until the photographer puts the camera away.

Under the Tuscan Sun -- The Official Movie Website
Looking forward to seeing this, at least on video. In 1987, I spent a summer quarter in Cortona, Italy. (where the movie is set) It was one of the best times of my life. I studied photography and art history in the most amazing classroom in the world - Tuscany.

must vent.
Stand back. I'm in a foul mood.
I still get junk mail - 2 years later - after buying my new house. I started getting them right after my mortgage papers went thru. So, I know they're the ones who sold me out. First part that bugs me is this- if I just bought a house, why would I want to get postcards from other realtors about selling my house?! Even if I were going to just flip it, I would have used my same Realtor. Also, if you're going to solicit my business, at least spell my fkn name right. It's not "Phuil". That's how I know where all this crap is coming from. They all spell my name wrong on the address label.

I went to return a book, and pickup my disposable camera from BAMY's house today. But, she couldn't find the camera. If you knew I was coming, why wouldn't you make sure you knew where it was before I got there? Save me a trip.

Drivers in seattle today nearly killed me. I counted three women on cell phones, waiting to turn, pulled halfway into traffic. (my lane.) Don't bother honking; they're busy on the phone, and will only blast back. Countless others stopped for no apparant reason, pulled to the side without signaling, and raced with the firetruck that I pulled over for.

then i go and nearly run a redlight, mowing down pedestrians in my way, after I thought they were jaywalking. jesus. what's wrong with me? maybe i was just distracted by all the other crap.

well, i made it home in one piece. and it has a happy ending. the mail arrived. and although there wasn't a check from my only client. (pay up ya cheap bastard!) There was a bookcrossing book waiting for me. Thanks, Emmett.

Also in the mail, there was a free disposable camera from Rachelle. [Thanks, Rachelle!] It's a groovy 8-frame "golf" camera. But, I have other creative plans for it.
There's a printed instruction on the back of the box which reads: "Keep Cool".
Right on, man. I will. I will!

I went to Mr. Spot's for a mocha this morning. For some reason, I thought they had WiFi. But, I was wrong. Here are some places that do have free wireless though! (don't pay for access at starbucks or tully's)
- Ballard Sip & Ship
- Cloud city coffee, Maple Leaf
- Herkimer coffee, Phinney Ridge
- monkey something cafe. damn , I can't remember the name. but, it's also in phinney ridge.
- Aurafice cafe
- Bauhaus cafe, Capitol Hill

Apple Store - University Village
Don't forget the Grand Opening tonight! 6-10pm.
|

9.25.2003

my 2nd wifi post today. I'm now at the starbucks in uvillage. I like this wifi day. but it all goes away tomorrow. I'm hoping it catches on. It would be great if you could get wifi wherever you go. but, the problem is that they charge you for it. So, why would i go to Starbucks and pay for access, when i can go to Cloud City and get it gratis??

why buy the farm when you can surf the cow for free? er... uh, something like that.

they were supposed to have a big thing here at 5. but the band is still warming up. (at 5:27) They've got a bunch of tents setup with demos and things. I saw a cool new color palm w/keyboard. Kind of like my treo but without a cover.

mcdonald's was giving out dippin' dots. and there was a tully's tent too.
Ok. so, I asked this mc.d's rep about the pay vs. free thing. and all she could do was spout the company script, re: "our affordable service!" but dammit. they had a trial in New York where you could get free wireless with any purchase. Why can't we go back to that?! I guess they lost money on the deal.

so, the difference here is that a place like cloud city puts in their own modem and says "come use us!". but a place like starbucks - they get T-Mobile to come in and juice the place up.. cherry it out with the latest wifi gizmos. and then they get their money back from subscription sales.

screw that, I say.

The good news from the u village today is that the new Apple Store opens tomorrow! woohoo! I'm coming back for the grand opening at 6pm. (after happy hour at 5)

I wonder what Steve thinks about all this.

The Photo Booth Chronicles
|

I thought that wifi day was only happening at U. Village. (that was the only place I heard of where things were going to be happening, starting at 5pm.) But, now I learned, thanks to Anita, that it's happening all over town.

I went to Firehouse coffee first. (they're listed as a participant) But, the brainy baristas had no idea what I was talking about when I asked if they had free wireless today.

So, now I'm at Tully's. They're on the ball. They're going to start charging for wireless; I'm glad they offer it. but, i don't see how they can charge for it, when 3 cafes down the street offer it for free. why is it that the big, rich, evil corporate places charge for wifi, but the cool hip broke-ass indie mom and pop coffee shops give it away for free?!

This afternoon, I hope to play some tennis with Malia; it's only the 3rd time I've played in the last 3 years. But, I think I'm improving. We're clinging to the last warm days of summer now.. and it's supposed to be sunny like this all week/weekend.

Enjoy Every Sandwich
During an appearnce on the Late Show with David Letterman, Warren Zevon was asked if he has learned anything new about life that the rest of us don't know, since being diagnosed with terminal cancer. He thought for a couple of seconds.. then said "..not unless I know how much you should enjoy every sandwich."

A pretty great philosophy, I think. I just might make that the title of my next painting.

And speaking of Letterman, he's about to become a father! He had talked about it over the years.. saying it would be nice to have kids some day. But, since he's 56, I thought the idea had past. But, now it's coming true. He and his girlfriend are going to become parents in about 3 months. link to the story

celebrity sighting.
I forgot to mention this yesterday. I spotted a celebrity in the Atlanta airport on Sunday. Fred Schneider, of the B-52's was wandering around the food court in Councourse A, trying to decide what to eat. I didn't talk to him. But, I was waiting for him to sit down.. so I could say 'howdy.' He never did. He gave up on looking at food, and wandered off to his gate. Maybe he was in a hurry.

I did lots of bookcrossing while I've been in Georgia. Including my favorite release- I left "The Wind Done Gone" at the Margaret Mitchell House (where Gone With The Wind was written)

I also did lots of phooning. Phoons.com should have my stuff up soon.

I'm looking forward to getting back to Seattle. There are lots of things going on this week: Oktoberfest orientation tomorrow; voting on Tuesday; Happy Hour and Recycled Art show on Thursday; Oktoberfest starts on Friday; teamworks project on Saturday.

I'm getting a cold though. So, this week might really suck. I must have caught it on my way here. I could feel it coming on while I was in Atlanta. Tomorrow it should be a nice full-blown headexploder.

9.13.2003

I'm back in Augusta for the night. I return to Seattle tomorrow afternoon. I had a great visit in Atlanta. BT, Jen & I went to see "Matchstick Men" yesterday. (great flick) then, we went to get dinner at this little italian place; then BT and I went to shoot some pool at Twain's. At Twain's, they played lots of Johnny Cash on the jukebox.

Rhoda & Doug were great hosts, as usual. They even left me a chocolate chip cookie by my bed when I got home last night.

This morning, I had breakfast with the Archers - the traditional Einstein Brothers bagels and coffee. It's always great to see them. But, they couldn't hang out for very long.... since the in-laws were on their way to town.

Today, we had a 1st birthday party for Caroline the niece. (my sister's 2nd kid) I'll post pictures later. Everybody had a good time. Lots of cousins and aunts and uncles and cousins and neighbors were here for the party.

Tomorrow, I'll see the nieces and nephews again briefly (on their way to church), and then I'll be heading to the airport at 1:30. I have a dreadful 3 planes to catch on my way home. I can't complain much- the ticket was free, thanks to my SkyMiles.

|

9.11.2003

Ahhhhh, HOTlanta. Gotta love it. Air conditioning is a wonderful invention.

I borrowed mom's car today and drove to Atlanta to see the old college gang. Brian and I went to see Chris the artist's new studio/gallery. What a cool place! I wish I could start something like that. He sells t-shirts and things too. Very cool stuff; excellent work.

After that, BT and I met with some other folks for pizza @ Fellini's.. on the patio. A great tradition. While we ate, 3 big black military helicopters flew overhead. We first thought it was a 9/11 patrol of some sort. But, later decided it must be a p.r. gimmick for the start of the Braves game. They flew over 5 more times while waiting for the official start of the 7:35 game) on their way down to Turner field. Real good use of our tax dollars, don't you think?

Check out phoons.com for my new Augusta phoon additions.

9.10.2003

Happy Birthday Caroline!
(and Ryan)

is this the cutest kid, or what?

I had dinner with the family tonight. When was the last time the 5 of us sat down to dinner? It must be years and years since that has happened. We went to a burrito place. Perfect, for me. But, my parents didn't really like it. They're used to the factory-generated-mexican fare you find at most generic taco places. The whole 'build-your-own-burrito' concept was completely mind-blowing to my dad.

after dinner, I went out for some beers with McDowell. We had a good time catching up; and talking about film/movies/tv production; mac stuff, etc. We ran into Pete, just like last time. So, I chatted with him for a bit too. After a couple of beers, we walked down the street to check out another new bar owned by Matt the bar guy. He has several cool places in downtown Augusta. The first is really smokey, and has a younger crowd. The 2nd place we went to has an older crowd; live bluegrass on the weekends; and a lot less smoke. We stayed there till about 12:30. I think McDowell was happy to have the break from home. And, of course.. any excuse for me to get out is always good. And then there was the $1 Bud Light pints - you can't beat that.

Reason #479 why I could never live in Augusta, GA. Try to find a decent radio station here. I defy you! All I hear is: gospel, country, oldies, and adult contemporary. My ears are homesick.

|

9.9.2003

Live from Disgusta
so, here i am in augusta. what is this?... tuesday? i got only an hour or two of sleep last night/this morning. i took the redeye from seattle to atlanta; 2 hour layover; then another flight from Atlanta to Augusta. the 1st site that greeted me at my atlanta gate was a Seattle's best coffee. [I'm homesick already]

Dad picked me up at the airport. and I'm just blogging with his PC. this man collects computer parts. for someone who knows next to nothing about computers, he sure has a lot of gadgets! I had to change his memory stick in the digital camera for him. (took me 2 seconds) He has only sent me 1 picture of my newest niece, taken with the camera. You'd think I'd be getting pictures from him all the time, right? You'd be wrong.

Tonight, Mom is bringing my nephew with her, home from school. So, I'll get to see 1 niece and nephew, and my sister.

Tomorrow is my niece's 1st birthday. I haven't seen Caroline since December. So, I'm sure she has changed a lot. Coleman says she's even starting to walk.

happy birthday, carol/karole!

yesterday, I got some more donated books for Bookcrossing. I'm up to 84 on my bookshelf now.

tonight, I'm leaving for Augusta. I'm going to visit friends and family. Haven't seen them since Christmas. My niece turns 1 tomorrow. So, my sister is throwing her a party on Saturday. I'll spend a few days in Atlanta while I'm there too. It will be good to see the old friends. There are certain rituals/traditions that I always look forward to when I visit Georgia:

I also plan to take lots of Phoon pictures there. I don't think there are any taken in Georgia. So, somebody has to step up!

I'll be staying at the Garden House B&B,... my friend Keith's parents' house. It's a little house in Decatur, GA that they turned into a bed and breakfast a few years ago. I built their web site. So, they let me stay there for free when I'm in town.

I have a new illustration in the works. It's of a dog riding a Segway. Pretty funny. But, it's taking me a while to complete the fleeing mailman. Will post soon.

Espresso Tax Protest at Green Lake - I encountered this protest as I was walking around the Lake today. I wish I had known about it. I would have been there earlier. They were just dispersing as we arrived. Everybody was dressed in colonial clothing (a la the Boston Tea Party). I'm glad to see so many people fighting this wrongheaded initiative. Hopefully, it will be defeated.

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them - by Al Franken
Looks like a good read. It debuted at the top of the best-seller list. Franken is always hilarious. He was sued by Fox for using the title on this book. But, they dropped the suit after a judge called it "wholly without merit." Bill O'Reilly (that former tabloid tv hack) is partly to thank for rocketing this book to the top. Go, Al!

I spotted this interesting view of my living room when the sun was just right. The photo on the right became a photo of my front yard, while the photo on the left stayed as it normally looks. Kind of a cool effect.

Mark it in your calendar: tomorrow night at 7pm, there's a Dean meetup. I'm pretty psyched up about the next presidential election. I don't know if Dean is going to be the Guy. But, I plan to campaign pretty hard for the guy with the best shot at Dubya.

CBS | Late Show with David Letterman : Top Ten Contest
WooHoo! I won a t-shirt for being one of the winners of the Late Show Top Ten contest. When I got the email this morning, I couldn't even remember what my entry was. I've entered the contest a bunch of times. But, this wasn't even my best attempt. Sometimes, I can't think of a line. Other times, I have some solid gold comedy. But, this entry was just sort of a throw-away quickie. So, I was surprised that they picked it. But, hey... free t-shirt!
