We Let the Dawgs Out

We Let the Dawgs Out
The Grit was closed today. So, after a nice lunch at The Taco Stand, I discovered these dawgs all over downtown Athens. "Uga" is the mascot of my alma mater.

Game night at the Bonner house. The whole gang was there. We hadn't done that in a couple of years. So, this was really fun. It ran the gamut from karaoke to stratego to Cranium, to some playstation dance game to something called Apples To Apples. Good times. I even got to witness a menorah lighting! [Tonight's the last night of Hannukah.] Wish I could have stayed longer. But, things were winding down by about midnight.

Tomorrow, I'm off to Atlanta. Might even stop in Athens on the way. Then, I'll hang out with Mala and BT.

Today has been pretty quiet, so far. I played some soccer with Luke. But, now my sister (and her family) have gone over to her in-laws' house.

Tonight, I think I'm just going to do some more TV and reading. I'd love to catch a movie. But, I bet everybody in the town will be at the friggn theatre.

Tomorrow, I'm going over to Lyn's house for the giant Bonner family wine and cranium-palooza. Should be fun. I missed it last year because they were all on a cruise. I haven't seen most of them in 2 years. And this is the first time that David and his girlfriend have been there. Coleman is also invited. But, she probably won't stay long. [if she comes at all]

2 more days till I get to drive to Atlanta. I'm thinking of stopping in Athens for a Golden Bowl!

You'll Shoot Your Eye Out
I'm watching "A Christmas Story", an annual tradition. What a classic. I notice new things each time. For instance, did you know that Peter Billingsley is left-handed? I made a Flash Christmas card a couple of years ago that was an homage to the stuck-tongue scene.

So, it's day 1 of the Christmas visit. So far, so good. Christmas Eve, 9:42pm. The siblings, nieces and nephews just left. And, I''m chillin out with a glass of wine and my Powerbook. (too bad mom and dad don't have WiFi) We had the annual puppet show-lip sync version of the Chipmunks' Christmas Song. Everybody has gone home. and Mom and Dad have hit the hay.

Last night's flights were okay. I thought I'd hate having to take 3 different planes to get here. But, it wasn't so bad. I think I like having the trip broken down into managable 2 or 3 hour chunks. On the first flight, I had this obnoxious 20-year-old dude sitting next to me. He wouldn't shut up. I tried to go back to reading my book. (the new Steve Martin novel; thanks, Juan!) But, he kept yammering. 30 minutes from landing, he stuck an unlit cigarette in his mouth. "Dude, I need a smoke!" He said "dude" about 37 times. I wanted to backhand the fukkr.

On the 2nd flight, I got to swap seats with a person in the 5th row! I was originally stuck in the last row in the back. But, the woman beside me asked if I would switch seats with her husband. I had tons of leg room up there right behind first class. But, it was also the loud-baby-section. Oh well. I traded the quiet section for the leg-room section. And, I also got to watch "Pirates of the Carribean" for free. Pretty good flick.

On my 3rd and final flight, they announced that they were looking for volunteers to get bumped since they were overbooked. I volunteered to give up my seat; and they told me I would get a free ticket to anywhere in the U.S., plus a hotel for the night; and they would put me on the 1st flight the next morning. But, it turned out that they had enough seats for everybody; and I ended up flying at my regular time.

I arrived around 11:15pm last night. and I took a taxi home to the parents' house.

Tomorrow, I might go see a movie. Our regular Christmas stuff is overwith, as of tonight. So, I don't have much to do for the next day or so. I'm getting lots of quality TV time. I've really missed MTV and Comedy Central. I watched an "Osbournes" marathon and The Daily Show last night. Mmmmmmm, cable!

12.22.2003

I'm off to see the family tomorrow morning. It's always a mixed bag of emotions. On the one hand, I'm really looking forward to seeing my nieces and nephews. [I don't get to see them that often. And, I don't know when I'll see them again after this.] On the other hand, I'll be stuck in the same house with my parents for extended periods. The have a way of getting under my skin when we're together.

The good thing about the visit is that I'll get to just relax and get some reading done. I'll get to watch cable TV again. Woohoo! And, I'll get a few free meals out of the deal.

More from the road later.

Resolutions

As the year winds down, it's time to think about New Year's resolutions. Instead of posting a bunch of my own, I'd rather challenge you to make some. If you feel like it, post a comment and tell me what your resolutions are.

And, here's the big one I want you all to think about. If you're interested in electing a new president in 2004, I want to ask you to get involved. Whatever candidate you like the most... find out more about them; visit their office if they have one in your city; attend a Meetup! Do whatever you can to help them out. 2004 is going to be the year of the biggest grassroots movement we've seen in a long long time.

It used to be that we could sit around and wait till November and go flip the switch, poke the chad, or fill in the bubble with our number 2 pencil. But, things are different now. The stakes are higher. I think we all need to do a little more than that. It doesn't have to take over your life. There are little things you can do between now (TODAY) and next fall to help bring about the change we all need.

Some things take virtually no effort at all:

Every little bit helps!

Salmon Run

If you have never seen wild salmon doing their thing before, get yourself to Carkeek park. I took pictures along Piper's Creek yesterday and counted a few dozen of these guys working their way upstream. It's amazing to watch. The picture above shows the main entrance they all have to get through between Puget Sound and the creek. This guy (above) kept getting way off course and flopping himself onto the concrete. Luckily though, he could wiggle and shake his way back down and start over again. Hope he made it.
