Leap Day!
Happy leap year/day. My uncle was a leap year baby. Today would have been his birthday. But, he died quite a while back. We shared the same name. But, for some reason, we all called him "DoDo" (as in, the bird).

Yesterday, there was a Dean rally down at Westlake center. A pretty small crowd. But, it was good to see all my old Dean friends again. Everybody is still energized; they plan on staying Dean delegates at the next caucus level, even though he's not in the race anymore. They want to keep us all together so we can take Dean's message to the convention. I know it seems strange. But, that's what they want. Personally, I'm ready to put it behind us and move on. I think Dean plans on making some type of announcement to his followers on March 19th.

all the cutest chicks in Seattle shop at PCC. I need to go there more often.
--
there are certain stores in Seattle where I get asked for money, or asked to buy a newspaper every time I cross from the parking lot to the door. Ok, fine. But, why do they ask me both on my way in, and on my way out? do they really think they have twice the number of potential customers than they actually have? or do they think I'll forget they were there when I went in? Or maybe they think I will have changed my mind after spending a bunch of money inside the store?
--
i haven't taken pictures in a while. so, i have none to post.
tuesday is a shitty tv night. So, maybe i'll watch a DVD!

howard dean is a few hundred grand in debt. if you've got money burning a hole in your pocket, help him pay off his bills from the campaign.

Happy Mardi Gras!
I went to Mardi Gras once, as a freshman in college. I had a blast. But, I think once was enough. There were 4 of us who drove down that year. David J. agreed to let us take his car. Perhaps that was a mistake from the start. We didn't even get out of Athens before trouble began. David was driving a little too fast. So, we got pulled over on the Atlanta Highway. (I guess it didn't help that we had "Bourbon St. or Bust" painted on the back windshield.) David didn't have proof of insurance. And, the cop arrested him. He was a total dick. We had to go bail out our buddy with all the New Orleans cash we were carrying. We finally got on the road around 5 p.m., I think. Then, it's a 10 hour drive to the Big Easy.
We stayed at a friend's dorm at Tulane; slept on the floor. It was my first time in New Orleans. But, I would later return many times over the years.
Unfortunately, I didn't take my camera because I thought I'd lose it or it might get stolen. So, I don't have any pictures from that weekend. We spent several nights carrying Dave around after he had too much to drink. Ryan got a little too wasted at Pat O'brien's one night. We collected tons of beads, ate beignets, met some cool people, and had an all-around good time. I think we even cut class on Monday and Tuesday.

The fight that we began can and must continue. Although my candidacy for president may end today, the most important goal remains defeating George W. Bush in November, and I hope that you will join me in doing everything we can to support the Democrats this fall. From the earliest days of our campaign, I have said that the power to change Washington rests not in my hands, but in yours. Always remember, you have the power to take our country back.

an unwelcome side effect is that i hear the you've-got-mail music much less. and that's sad. sure, it was 99% junk. But, at least i felt like I was getting some attention before.

meetups
the Bookcrossing meetup was supposed to be tonight. but, the group has died. we used to have a dozen or more people at every meeting. but, now there aren't even enough people to hold this month's meetup. Oh well. I couldn't go anyway. We're going to play team trivia at Old Pequliar, since it's John's birthday. I hope drunken gymnastics won't be required this time.
tomorrow is the vegetarian meetup at 7, and the photography meetup at 8. Both are at Uptown Espresso in Belltown!

I arrived at the Dean office today (at the usual time, on my usual day), only to find the doors locked at 9am. Charlie was there waiting. And, Amy was waiting in her car. I was glad that I had a key so I could let everybody in out of the cold. Imagine my surprise when my key didn't work. They fucking changed the locks on us. And didn't tell us! I happened to have the office manager's phone number. So, I called him and asked if he was on the way in. (He wasn't.) So, he said he would call the state director. (who wasn't planning on getting there until 10. Charlie and I said 'fuck it' and went to get coffee. We came back a little before 10, and somebody had finally showed up with a key.
It was fucking depressing. It's like they've given up. I mean, I know we lost Washington state. But, this is a 50-state campaign, right? They were already starting to pack up the computers, and take all the pictures and posters off the walls. And, I learned that we have to be out of the office by the end of the month. Sad.
Sara was there helping box materials up to send to the Wisconsin office. So, that didn't help matters, considering the email she sent me last week. The phone rang a few times. And, the callers were shocked that a human was there to actually answer. Some of them proceeded to rant about Kerry, or bitch about some mail they received from the campaign, or rant about "what Dean needs to do now". Nobody had bothered checking voice mail in at least a week. Most of them wanted to know where to go for their caucus. But, it's a little late for that. I wonder if they ever found where they were supposed to go.
The crazy vitamin lady also called. This was some volunteer who kept telling me how sick, pale, tired and shitty I looked at the Tacoma event. She wouldn't shut up about vitamins. "Are you taking your vitamins? You've gotta take your vitamins! Be sure and take those vitamins, ok?!" I finally had to tell her I would take them just to get her to stop talking about it. Then she found me at the office and had to start in on it again.
Peter, another volunteer.. who also happens to be a counselor, typed up a sort of post-caucus-loss "how to deal" memo for everybody. And it basically says.. just get back to normal; re-connect with friends; catch up with people you haven't seen in a while, get lots of rest, etc.
I don't plan on going back to the office any more. I think I'm done.
I'll wait and see what happens at the other primaries; then, eventually, I'll probably be helping the eventual nominee.

Anybody But Bush
It looks like Dean is going to lose Washington today. (and perhaps Michigan as well). It's pretty disappointing after all the promises that the State office made us. ("we're going to win.. I know we're going to win! Don't worry.") But, my precinct caucus went better than I was expecting. I really thought I could be the only Dean person to show up. But, there were many others. We ended up getting 2 Dean delegates. and Kerry also got 2. Kucinich walked away with 1.
After the caucus, we all went down to the New Orleans restaurant in Pioneer Square. One supposed "supporter" kept bitching about Kerry. I wanted to smack her. She kept saying "I'm out after this. I give up. I'm not voting for Kerry if he gets the nomination." So, I guess she doesn't care if Bush gets re-elected. I don't get that all-or-nothing attitude that some of the Dean people have. I thought we were in it to get Bush out of the white house? No? Well, that's my priority.

NRDC - Break the Chain
NRDC - Break the Chain:
"Although more than 80 percent of Americans want vehicles to be more fuel efficient, Detroit keeps dragging its feet. Instead of using technology that already exists to give us cars, minivans and SUVs that consume less gas and spew less pollution, U.S. automakers continue to build gas-guzzlers and to fight against fuel economy standards. The result is a dangerous dependence on oil.
It's time to send Detroit a message that inefficient cars and trucks have kept Americans chained to the gas pump, and American security chained to foreign oil, long enough. General Motors is the world's largest automaker and the most influential in the industry's trade association, which led the charge against raising fuel economy standards during the last session of Congress. In the coming months, you'll have opportunities to sound off to other Detroit automakers, so check back often.
Tell General Motors to break the chain!"

Dean says he'll pull out of the race if he doesn't win in Wisconsin on 2/17. I'm kind of numb to it all now. I used to be stressed and worried. But, now I'm just rolling along. Whatever happens, happens, right? I sort of hoped Dean would stay in the fight longer. But, I think he's running out of money. So, it would be wasteful to keep going if there's no hope of getting the nomination.
I guess we'll see what happens this weekend. But, things aren't looking good for Deaniacs.

woohoo! groundhog day is almost here. I went to see "General Beau Lee" a few years ago. He's sort of Georgia's version of Punxatawney Phil. And, he lives in a mini Georgian style mansion.
One of my favorite comedies is Bill Murray's "Groundhog Day." If you haven't seen it, you should definitely give it a try.
If you live near Atlanta, you can check out the Groundhog Day Jugglers Festival. Always a good show.
