You love a lot of
things if you live around them. But there isn't any woman and there isn't any horse,
not any before, nor any after, that is as lovely as a great airplane. And men who
love them are faithful to them even though they leave them for others. A man has
only one virginity to lose in airplanes, and if it is a lovely plane he loses it to, there
is where his heart will forever be."
Ernest Hemmingway
It took me a
few months, but I finally found the quote. While there are very few people outside
of the Intruder community who would ever be known to refer to the A-6 as
"lovely", those within the community can think nothing less of this trusted
steed. Despite its appearance, age, and limitations in the face of a modern
adversary, my heart still belongs to the A-6. I only had the opportunity to fly the
Intruder for 4 years, 1 at VA-42 as a replacement B/N and three with VA-75, the Sunday
Punchers. Nevertheless, the old lady has won my heart. We can dispute the wisdom of our
leaders in retiring the A-6 for hours, but the fact remains that the book has been closed
on the finest aircraft ever to fly into harm's way.
The purpose of this page is to serve as a signpost for those of
you wishing to pay your respects to a warrior, iron horse and trusted friend. There are
already several Intruder pages on the web that far exceed anything I could create.
Probably the finest A-6 page I have found is Winnie Winston's . Others are listed
below, as are some images I have acquired over the years - both on the web and from my own
collection. In all cases, I have tried to credit the original photographer (if known).
I am always looking for new images of the mighty Intruder, especially those of the Sunday
Punchers (my old squadron). If you have information on the photographers, have images
you'd like added, or would like to make comments about this page, e-mail me at
salted1@mindspring.com .
