Mentoring for Home Educators

Some coaching and mentoring of home schooling families available in the north Austin area.

Assessments

Confidential, scientific educational skills assessment, conveyed in a positive, "how do we help" frame of mind. Most of these are norm-based. All of these are scientifically tested. None of these come out with "death knell diagnoses" or an enforced label. Instead help you know where your child is in terms of development and therefore what needs should be addressed.

Available assessments include Kaufmann Early Academic and Language Skills Test for ages 3-6 , WRAT4, assessments for autism, diagnostic reading tests, tests for auditory processing, scales for developmental delays. I particularly like the Kaufman test for preschooler's school readiness because it targets in an easy-to-see way several foundations for academic achievement. Long before getting into diagnoses or special education labels, this test can help the parent or preschool educator strengthen the child's learning readiness. It evaluates language abilities, and pre-reading skills, and could be ued to evaluate program effectiveness. In other words, it can show you where your child stands now, can be used to plan a program, and then test progress afterward. Not available : WISC-R (or other IQ tests) or the MMPI (a test for personality disorders.) If you are looking for only a curriculum level test, you may find one from the curriculum provider. Alpha Omega, Bob Jones Univerity Press, and ACE offer such.

If you have test results but need them translated, I can do that for you too.

Although it is unusual for someone other than a school diagnostician or someone with a counseling practise to offer these tests, with my training in statistics for my Master's in Sociology and my experience as a tutor, I am permitted to buy educational assessment instruments. From my experience as a parent educator, as well as tutor and ECD consultant, I saw the vital need to do so. A big and common problem is the doctor may not have taken the time to adequately explain to the parent what the report means. Sometimes the report, while based on high quality tests, is not detailed enough for educators. On the other hands, often tests that educators conduct are not scientific enough to warrant much in the way of conclusions. In almost all cases, however, the overaching problem is one of attitude - is this a label or is this guidance to the educator? Is this a death knell or a starting gun to a more well run race? I offer scientific testing, explained in plain English to the parent, and will work with private educators for curricula planning. This is a key need in so many students' lives. Therefore I felt it important to offer assessments myself.

Results are given to you, explained in plain English, and not shared or saved without your express permission. Thus, they cannot be used against you by insurance companies or school systems. They are not diagnoses. Only doctors give diagnoses. These are instructions to educators -- and in some cases, information for the parent so they can seek out the right kind of health care provider, rather than just getting sold what someone sells. Assessments can save time, greif, and really, children's lives, in terms of peace of mind, self esteem, and achievement.

CONCLUSION

We will gratefully recieve any offerings God leads you to send. We could use these toward partial consulting and tutoring scholarships, We would be very glad to recieve seed money for getting the word out on our new book. You can see we have started in faith, in a frugal manner. We wish to be of great service, but this does that more seed money than a single educator can provide. Thank you very much. Grace and Peace to you.
