CURRENT REFLECTION: Get to the Truth

I have lately seen how far off my college students are from knowing basic facts of American history, basic concepts of philosophy, or even basic tenets of the Christian faith. Yet they think they know more than most older people. One young lady who couldn't get to and stay in her class last week, figured that I wouldn't know who Dagon was, but misidentified the basic tenets of Christianity, which she knew a priori were worthless. I am no longer surprised at the stable statistic that half of my incoming freshmen do not know who or what the Union was during the Civil War. Unfortunately, I also discovered I was grossly ignorant about history last week. I was taught that Ferdinand and Isabella financed Christopher Columbus' voyage in 1492. In actuality three conversos (converted Jews) financed it. Maybe they knew what was coming in 1493. What happened in 1493? The Spanish Inquistion started. Oh my, it is back to the books for me.

Let's not be satisfied with what little we were taught in public school. For sure, let's not be satisfied with how little we have studied. Let's make good students of ourselves. Let's really study the Word. Let's also study all kinds of truth.

Have fun! -- Sister Sharon

This will give a good orientation to families with young readers. It will likely be all most readers ever need. Certainly it is a good supplement to most current public school curriculums that are haphazard. If your student proves to need a completely articulated rule set, AVKO is your resource. My report is a good beginning for anyone and sufficient for most, even many with dyslexia.

Each of these is $5.00 and available in eformat or hardcopy. Please enclose $1.00 s&h and $0.41 sales tax in Texas.

How to Win the Game of School : Study Skills for College Students Now available for $15.00 in either digital or hardcopy format. Written for my junior college level students.

AVKO Sequential Spelling (Audio Visual Kinesthetic Oral) Multisensory approach developed for use with dyslexics or anyone who wants a thoroughly logical and clear approach. We recommend using with any student who has difficulty spelling. I am regularly amazed at the lack of order, sense, and communicativeness in typical public school spelling curriculum. This one, by contrast makes sense. This program, by contrast, is orderly, incremental, and sensible. Highly recommended.

Sequential Spelling by AVKO 1- 7 Set This is the only spelling program you will need for your students' first seven years. Based on principles needed for dyslexics. We continue to be impressed with this program. It follows the same logic that our own very concise spelling guide uses, but instead goes over every detail. $69.95

ABOUT

Sharon Sarles homeschooled her daughter and grandsons with dramatic success. Hearing what she was doing, her pastor directed her to write a book on it, and put up this website. She has long been a tutor and teacher. Indeed, she has taught every age group and many situations.

She holds a Montessori Diploma from St. Nicholas in London, a Master's in Divinity, and a Master's in Sociology. Member Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Kappa Delta, Phi Kappa Phi, and Golden Key Honor Society, all honor societies. Life member Mensa.

Currently directs a church related preschool and teaches at the junior college level. Sharon also consults and trains for daycares and preschools, granting recognized clock hours in Texas.

She has served the church both in the religious education department and in the pastoral ministry.

She feels called to bless and equip those who teach. Let's expand The Blessing, the Kingdom, the knolwedge of God through blessing our children, first in home education, then in Christian schools and then in all schools.
