Students Should Make Wiser Decisions For Electing NewOfficers

By Barbara Strong

Wanted: A good leader. Applicant must have the following qualities to be considered: Ability to work hard, know-how to do job, imagination to succeed, willingness to assume responsibility, and patience to cope with others and-situations.

Unfortunately, it is rare that one comes across an advertisement such as this. If more existed today, we might have better leaders--presidents of classes, schools, businesses and countries.

In most cases, a group of individuals decide who will be its leader. They do so by appointing, electing, or hiring the person whom they think best fits the job.

ALIENATION DEVELOPS

At Grady, we have had leaders who have not lived up to their offices. They have not set good examples for their classmates by their attendance, conduct, and respect shown towards authority. This has resulted in alienation of their followers because of the irresponsibility from the leader. Progress has slowed down because people did not select their leader's properly. An awareness of the duties of the leader who is to be selected and ail understanding of' the persons being considered for the job are important, almost essential in seriously choosing a leader. It is. one's obligation and right to inform oneself before the power of selecting a leader is used.

Also, leaders who have these necessary qualities have failed occasionally, not because they did not try hard enough, but because those under them did not cooperate.

WISE CHOICE IMPERATIVE

Therefore, much consideration must be given before one votes, hires, or appoints. One must be willing to follow the leader or the purpose of file leader is defeated. Once elected, one person is not to do all the work, but to see that all the work gets done. A leader is to set an example for his followers, who in turn should follow it,

If you are a leader, do not disappoint your followers. If not, cooperate with your leader or nothing will ever get accomplished. Your disatisfactions with your leader may be your own fault since you may have chosen the wrong person to do the job.

VOTE COUNTS

In upcoming elections, consider closely all candidates in order to find (fie one whom you want to lead you. A vote should be the end result of a sure choice bas ed an careful thinking. Remember, your vote Counts, so use it wisely.

Teachers' Lounges At School Need In Some Areas

By Maria Saporta

Condition of the teachers' lounge is deplorable. There is a great need to make improvements due to the misuse of materials by the teachers and the apathy of the administration.

In the worst is the third floor lounge, whose ceiling is cracking apart. Dirt stains the walls. The tables and floors are filled with cigarette butts, and furniture is old, decrepit, and depressing.

Located in the basement, the lounge is in a little better condition. Written on the wall is a saying, "A thing of beauty is joy forever", however the words seem to be lost in their surroundings.

The best lounge can be found in tile sub-basement. The room is spotless and looks untouched. Some are not aware of its existence.

Most teachers use the teachers' lounge, however' they are not exactly overjoyed about the condition they are in, They feet that some improvements we necessary. These most often mentioned were furniture, telephones, radios, and a perculator for coffee.

If the school could provide these lounge with better materials, there might not be so much dissatisfaction concerning tile lounges.

Assistant principal, Mr. Clifford Ashmore stated, however, that the school cannot possibly provide money for such improvements.

Various clubs at Grady could undertake a project to improve conditions so that teachers can enjoy the rest they deserve.

Remodeling Necessary At All Grady Restrooms

Although Grady claims to have bathrooms, they are in actuality, not "worthy" of the name. For, perhaps, four years Grady's bathrooms have been lacking in every respect, except for the ability to turn one green by a convincing alliance of sight and smell. Obscenities and other more material annoyances litter the walls and floors of Grady's "bathrooms".

The teachers' lounges are very old and not in the best of conditions. Better accomodations could be made.

The SOUTHERNER staff strongly urges the school, administration to remedy these problems regarding the bathrooms as soon as possible.
