As acting superintendent of the Atlanta Public Schools System, Dr. Betty Strickland plans to strengthen the entire school system by working to create stronger communication between teachers, students, and parents.

"I have a special interest in the kids of Atlanta. Regardless of any setbacks--and they are expected-- the main goal is to look forward, and we can do this by establishing our focus [anything that benefits the children], and being persistent in fulfilling our goals," Dr. Strickland said.

In the past few years, parents and teachers have complained about students not receiving a proper education. "Dr. Benjamin Canada really didn't do anything that benefited the students of Atlanta Public Schools. So far it appears that Ms. Strickland is more accessible to students and parents than Dr. Canada was which will allow her to be more in tune to the needs of the children," David Kelsey, junior, said.

The former superintendent, Dr. Canada, left APS, voluntarily accepting a position in another school system. Dr. Strickland was then appointed by the board as interim superintendent.

Even though she is only serving as interim superintendent, Dr. Strickland still has full responsibility for making decisions that will benefit the students and their future. Nonetheless, it could be a while before the Atlanta Board of Education offers the position to another candidate or appoints Dr. Strickland as the permanent superintendent. Members of the board have considered offering the portion to individuals other than people who are already a part of the school system, such as military generals, police officers, and others who have careers in corporate America.

"The Board of Education did a wonderful thing by placing Dr. Strickland in the Superintendent position. From working with her for three years, I can truly say that she is moving the system forward and has the gift to motivate individuals to do what's right for the children," Dr. Thelma Mumford-Glover, Special Assistant to Dr. Strickland said.

Not only is Dr. Strickland well respected among her colleagues, but other people who work within the school system admire her strong will and ambition to make the Atlanta Public School System prosperous.

"Dr. Strickland is a wonderful person. She has been working with the school system for years and her performance has proven that she is a well rounded individual who wants to see our children succeed," Mrs. Brenda Hudson, math teacher said.

Will Dr. Strickland consider keeping the position of Superintendent? "It can be a stressful job because there are many challenges. But it's rewarding when you see positive changes. You have to have adults that care and as long as the system needs me, I'll be here," she said.
