Directions to Camp Satyrchase

From Dallas/Fort Worth

Last Updated: 4/20/06

Take US 75 (Central Expressway) North. When it becomes US 69, stay on US 69 North.

Take I-40 East toward Fort Smith. Some time later you will see an exit for Fort Smith. Do NOT take the Fort Smith exit.

Take I-540 North toward Fayetteville. You will come to this exit just a little while after the one for Fort Smith.

I-540 will become Hwy 71 (bypass). Keep going north and take Exit 72. The sign says "US-412." Turn right at the light so that you are heading east on Hwy 412. Note your odometer reading at this point.

You will need to make a zig-zag after about three miles by turning right at Thompson Street in Springdale (where the Price Cutter grocery store is). Then about 0.6 miles later make a left turn onto Robinson Avenue, which is also Hwy 412. Note your odometer reading again.

Proceed on Hwy 412 east to Hunstville. This will take a while. You will pass into Madison County after about 14 miles. Three miles after that you will make a long right hand curve, at the end of which 412 will merge with 45. You’ll hit Hindsville after another mile or so. Don’t speed in Hindsville! You’ll merge with another part of 45 after another mile or so.

Take the turn for 412B into Hunstville. It will be on your right just after 412 turns into 4 lanes again, which is about 24 miles after turning onto 412 from Thompson Street in Springdale. Follow the road into Huntsville. You will twist and turn a lot, especially a fairly sharp right curve just before you reach downtown.

In downtown Huntsville, turn right onto Hwy 23 (It looks like a narrow alley between 2 buildings). If you’re watching your odometer, this will be at about 27.1 miles since you turned onto 412 from Thompson Street in Springdale. If you miss the turn, turn right at Madison County Bank & Trust (you’ll have a Texaco station in front of you and the bank will be on your right), then turn left just after the Pizza Hut, which will put you on Hwy 23.

Turn left on Hwy 127 (there should be a small, yellow and black Dragon Crest sign attached to the Hwy 127 sign). This will be about 7 miles past the Huntsville Pizza Hut in a tiny town called Aurora (a.k.a. - a wide spot in the road). Follow Hwy127, which will become a dirt road after about 5.7 miles. Check your odometer at that point, and keep going on the dirt road.

About 1.0 miles after the end of the pavement you will see another small, yellow and black Dragon Crest sign attached to a black mailbox on the left side of the road. This mailbox is just outside the gate that leads to the campground. (If you're watching mailboxes instead of your odometer, it will be the next one after the one labeled "McLean.")

Proceed as follows depending on whether you are going straight to the site or crashing at our place Friday night:

  1. If you are going straight to the site from Dallas/Fort Worth:
  2. If it has been raining heavily the week before an event, the ruts in the roads on the site are likely to be bad. In such a case, we strongly suggest that you park on the side of the road and hike into the camp, unless you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The brave, foolhardy, or well-prepared (i.e. - 4WD) driver may proceed through the main gate and down the main dirt road. Bear left at the fork and proceed straight through all 4-way intersections, until you reach the 3rd large area that has been cleared of trees (and has little pinkish signs that say "Parking Area"). Park your vehicle there unless you are REALLY prepared for some nasty off-road driving. Grab your gear and follow the main road all the way down the hill, bearing left at the fork, until you see a circle of logs around a camp fire, with a partially finished building next to it. Look and listen for us there.

If you get lost on the site, honk your horn at 30 second intervals and we will come and find you.

  3. If you plan to crash at our place Friday night:

Keep going past the entrance to the camp. About 2.3 miles past the camp entrance you will reach a fork in the road that is very easy to miss in the dark. It actually looks more like the road makes a 90-degree left turn. Bear RIGHT at this fork in the road.

About a half a mile after the fork in the road you will come to a 4-way intersection. Turn right.

After another half a mile you will see our mobile home on the right, next to an old farmhouse. There is no mailbox there, but the address is on the window of the mobile home. It is 5230 Madison 3350.

Our phone number is 479-232-5308.
