The Single Lens Reflex Camera
WorldSpy Corp., 10/14/98

There are two types of cameras that use 35mm film: single lens reflex (SLR) and compact, or "point and shoot," cameras. SLR cameras provide their users with more flexibility in picture taking. These cameras have changeable lenses, flashes and more, and allow users to set such variables as shutter speed and aperture. SLR cameras are designed for the more-serious photographer who is not as interested in simple "point-and-shoot" picture taking.

Unlike most compact cameras, SLRs offer a photographer the ability to adjust his or her camera's settings manually. Whereas a point-and-shoot camera handles shutter speed, aperture and even the focus, an SLR allows its user to adjust these settings for whatever effect he or she desires. (Some SLRs do have an "automatic" setting, enabling them to be operated with the ease of a compact camera, but these models are the most expensive. If only point-and-shoot capability is desired, then a compact camera should be seriously considered.)

There are a variety of lenses that can be used with SLRs. Most come equipped with a 50mm or 55mm lens, which is adequate for taking mid-distance photos. Wide-angle lenses can be used for taking photographs of landscapes or large groups of people. Telephoto lenses can be used for taking far-distance shots. Macro lenses can be used for taking extreme close-up photos of small objects. Although these are the most common types of lenses in use, there are others that enable different visual effects, such as fish-eye, tilt-shift, super-wide and super-telephoto lenses. Most lenses are only usable with SLRs made by the same manufacturer; for example, a Canon lens can only be used with a Canon body, and a Nikon lens will only work with a Nikon body.

Other accessories that add to the flexibility a photographer has when using an SLR include: filters (such as UV filters and polarizing filters), flashes and tripods.

Although bulkier and heavier than most compact cameras, SLRs provide their users with more choices and picture-taking options. If flexibility, power and a more-artistic photograph are what is desired, an SLR camera is the way to go.
