Free City of Athens

The Free City of Athens, 400-546 AD. In 460 AD Prince Van Arc of Achaia (modern Morea) rebelled wth Crete forming the Island Nation of Achaia, surrendering in 465 AD. Until 534 AD, Athens and the Greek territories were strong allies of the Eastern Roman Empire. While on a diplomatic meeting in Athens, Constantine V was murdered by Queen Illia's assassins after attempting to integrate the kingdom into Byzantium. 12 years later all of Greece and the islands of the Aegean were pacified by Constantine VI.
