An ever increasing demand for electrical energy must be met. The construction of new extra high voltage transmission and distribution lines occurs everyday. Maintaining existing lines, substations and other electrical apparatus is also a big job. An apprentice is one bound by indenture for a prescribed period of time who is learning a trade by experience and instruction under skilled workers.
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the National Electrical Contractors Association joint sponsor the SELCAT program. NECA provides funding and employs participants in the training program. The IBEW provides the opportunity of belonging to a labor organization with over 1 million members.
You will be able to prepare for a lifetime career with only 7000 hours of on the job training and related instruction in a classroom setting which will supplement the training received on the job.
You will earn while you learn. Wages depend upon the level of apprenticeship you are in and the area in which you work. The apprentice making satisfactory progress gets a raise in pay upon the completion of each 1000 hours of on the job training and required classroom work.
You will travel throughout Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas to enable you to acquire the necessary experience and skills to complete the program.
