World War I Era Soldiers
(1917 - 1919)

last updated July 25, 2004

"Immediacy of World War came slowly to Lawrence. Draft calls pulled youths from their homes, but most left willingly and in high spirit, for war still carried its traditions of glory and honor. Steadily the boys left home, in groups of 40 to 70. Farmers were at first exempt from service, but later had to go.

Suddenly, the war was over. The end was anti-climactic--except for announcement of battlefield deaths which began to dribble in. Lawrence had lost 10 sons to bullet, gas, and shell in the final days, but word was not heard until after the November 11 cessation. Seven others died of disease and 40 carried their wounds home.

They were well-greeted upon return, and from that day forward would be identified as veterans, whether they were married, convicted, or dying. They had not been gone long, but the returning was to a new era." (source 3)
