What is Distance Learning?

Distance learning uses instructional materials that are specifically developed and designed for learners who are separated from their instructor by time and/or space. These instructional materials may involve various technologies including web sites or other computer-based materials, printed guides, audio or videotapes, telephone, radio, or even television.  Ideally these technologies allow for two-way conversation between learner and instructor and/or learner and other learners. Distance learning differs from face-to-face classes in that learners are often working alone, without the support available within a group or instructor-led situation.

Our experience has shown that development of a distance learning course should include many of the same elements as a traditional face-to-face class: learners, instructors, needs analysis, instructional design, technology selection and implementation
