After her early studies with Brice Andrus, Atlanta native Julie Spencer attended Northwestern University where she was a student of Richard Oldberg and Dale Clevenger. After engagements with the Lyric Opera, the Chicago Sinfonietta and the Orchestra of Illinois, Ms. Spencer moved to Guadalajara, Mexico to perform with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jalisco for three seasons. Since her return to Atlanta in 1991, she has won posts as principal horn with the Atlanta Opera, the Atlanta Ballet, the Gwinnett Philharmonic, the Greenville (SC) Symphony Orchestra and the Columbus Symphony. A frequent performer with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Ms. Spencer has recorded the works of Mahler, Stravinsky and Schoenberg with the ASO under the batons of Yoel Levi, and Robert Shaw. She is the horn instructor for Georgia State University and is also a founding member of the cooperative chamber orchestra the Georgia Sinfonia. As a member of the Atlanta Brassworks, she performs quintet literature throughout the South.
