playwriting resources

You're a writer, and you want to find help through the Internet. Here are a few places to start.

Links for Playwrights

Playwrights on the Web

More partners in crime. If you're looking for a kindered soul, this site presents a marvelous networking opportunity. It also has a fine listing of playwriting opportunities at Playwrights Noticeboard.

Yahoo: Theatres on the Web

A good listing of theatres with web sites. When cross-checked against the Dramatists Sourcebook, this site makes an excellent marketing tool. Check out what various theatres' seasons look like, if they're still in business, and who's making the decisions. You can also get a feeling for a theatre's aesthetic by looking at their website. Inside information on the cheap.

Bob Jude Ferrante

A New York based playwright, Mr. Ferrante administers the La Ronde Playwrights Web Ring and the NYPD. No really, the New York Play Development Lab. It is just as it says, a play development program for New York playwrights. His page also includes a fine set of theatre links.

NEW: An Eclectic Guide for Submissions

Submit you must.  That is, if you want your work to be staged.  The information I’ve put together on theatres interested in New Work should not be considered inclusive or even representative.  These theatres do strike me as being interested in taking chances, but make sure you do your own footwork to make sure the included information is up-to-date because submission policies, personnel, and even the existence of various theatres constantly changes.  These resources were drawn from The Dramatists Sourcebook, The Dramatists Guild Submission Guide, and my own web research.  To check out the submission guide, go to, not surprisingly:

General Writing Links

Information on the publishing industry, literary agents, some information on what editors are looking for, as well as new books coming out, writing links, and links to established writers.

Poets & Writers

Many, many writing topics, mostly for prose and poetry. The site's Speakeasy forum is a good place to share triumphs and tragedies with other writers as well as bitch, moan, and pick up market tips. Kind of an ongoing writer's conference where you don't have to eat the stale cookies.

 Authorlink

Networking site for writers, editors, agents, and publishers.  Who’s hot and who’s flak is hot.

The Eclectic Writer

A good general listing of resources for writers.

Writersonline.com

A site designed to link up freelance writers with publishers.
