WHAT DOES UMA STAND FOR?
"U-M-A" is an abbreviated way of referring to our school "Stan Lee's United Martial Arts"
WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?
We are located at 465 S. Nova Road, Ormond Beach, FL 32174
We are located in the Renaissance Center, next
to Takeya's Japanese Steakhouse and Manny's Pizza
HOW YOUNG CAN CHILDREN START?
We have students currently in our program as young as 3 1/2. We have a special program designed specifically for children 3 to 5 years of age.The program helps younger students build concentration power and teaches social skills.
WHAT STYLE OF MARTIAL ARTS DO YOU TEACH?
Our program teaches striking techniques from Tae Kwon Do and Kickboxing, and grappling techniques from Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Hapkido, and Shootfighting. This means that all students learn a balanced program of punching and kicking techniques ,along with the throws, sweeps, takedowns, submission holds and ground technique. The student is then capable of defending his or herself at any range or in any situation. Most Martial arts schools only teach punching and kicking techniques in formal patterns that give the student a false sense of security. Ninety percent of all real street confrontations end up in a clinch or on the ground. so knowledge of grappling movements is essential in preparing students for reality. The theory taught is based upon the philosophy of the late Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do. Bruce Lee wrote " Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own." The important point is that the students safety is our highest priority. It is more important than tradition.
WHAT DEGREE BLACK BELT ARE YOU?
Instructor Stan Lee currently holds the following ranks.
4th degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do
2nd degree Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu
1st degree Black Belt in Judo
1st degree Black Belt in Hapkido
When attempting to find an instructor many newcomers believe that " Instructor So and So is an 18th degree black belt so he must be the best instructor." This is NOT the way to choose a teacher. Just because someone holds a doctorate degree doesn't necessarily make them a fine teacher. The important things to look for is the ability to communicate well and plenty of patience. After 1st degree Black Belt the primary requirement in most styles is time in grade and politically what have you done for those people who hold rank above you. Unfortunately a teacher doesn't usually get promoted for what he or she does for the people below him or her, who it is really their job to SERVE. Look for an Instructor who is willing to set the example instead of just talking about it.
